Trying to add a review, but I get an odd message

It looks like imdb changed the way reviews are written and the page to add one is now a pop up. I tried copying and pasting my content from Microsoft Word and it wouldn't publish. I instead got a message that read "Sorry, your submission contains characters that are not latin-1 comparable". What does this mean?
I've posted a ton of reviews in the same manner of copying and pasting from Microsoft Word and have not had a problem until this new system of posting reviews happened

Thanks for letting us know.  The error message is trying to tell you the review text includes characters which are not supported by IMDb. Ordinary this is to trap things such as entering a review entirely in Kanji or another character set.

The most likely cause of this in your case are the presence of smart quotes in the Microsoft Word document.  You can disable them by following the instructions at https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/Smart-quotes-in-Word-702FC92E-B723-4E3D-B2CC-71DEDAF2F343 or, probably easier, open Microsoft Notepad and paste the text in there first and then re-copy and paste from there.

Also we have opened a ticket to try and auto-fix this as it will be a common case (and also to make the error message more clear).

I have done everything you suggested and I'M STILL GETTING THAT MESSAGE! WHY DID IMDB EVEN CHANGE THAT AT ALL! It was fine they way it was, as it at least told me where in my reviews things were misspelled or not acceptable. All this new system has done is fix something that was never broken! EITHER GO BACK TO THE OLD FORMAT OR FIX IT SO IT TELLS ME WHAT EXACTLY IS NOT LATIN-1 COMPATIBLE!

I can't work with this as a film critic. Either deal with it or I'm leaving IMDB!

Sorry about this. We are updating the error message to highlight the specific characters which are causing the issue (and also auto-fixing as many as we can so there's nothing to edit).   In the meantime, please see the advice above:

i cannot post my full review of Last Jedi with your new format. All I am getting is an odd response about my review being "latin 1 ineligible" .  I tried retyping it, cut & pasting it, editing it...to no avail. Could you please direct me in being able to post my reviews and ratings as I did before with my previous  200+ reviews on your site. This new "improvement" is not user friendly. Some advice would be appreciated if I want to continue posting. Please send helpful instructions to:  jadepietro@rcn.com. Thanks.

We have added extra automatic clean-up here and also the error message now explains which characters need to be fixed if we have overlooked any of the clean-up.  Thanks again for the problem report.
