If I know that an actor appears in a specific Tv-series but I don't know the exact episode/episodes he/she appeared in, how do I do to add the person in the cast list and leave the episode field with the note "unknown episodes"?

Once Episodes have been added to a TV Series on IMDb, it is very difficult to add Cast (or Crew) except to specific episodes.

IMDb treats each episode as a separate project in many ways, so  adding only to the Series is, in a rather farfetched way, like saying "I know he acted in a Bond movie, but don't know which one."

That is admittedly a little strained, but it gives the general idea. Also, IMDb is primarily about recording on-screen credits, and a Series obviously  has none, only Episodes do.

You need to try and discover just which episode(s) they were in.

But then how come I've seen several people listed on a Tv series om Imdb without any specific episodes and sometimes even without a role?

Andreas: The people you currently see listed as being in "unknown episodes" were probably submitted to the series as cast members before any episodes were listed -- that is, when the series was originally added to the database, or in some cases before 2006 when IMDb first started listing episode separately. But once episodes start being listed for the series, all future cast members must be submitted to specific episodes.

The issue of cast members being submitted without character names is a completely different story. Suppose you were watching a television episode that, like many television series, listed actor names in the credits but did not indicate what character each actor played. And suppose that you didn't recognize the actors and thus couldn't match them with their character names, nor did you have any way to find out which role was played by each of the actors. You could submit the actors as listed in the episode credits to IMDb, leaving their character names blank, with no problem. IMDb would like to have cast members matched with their character names, but it is perfectly willing to accept cast names without characters listed if the character names are not known.

Ok another question: Sometimes when I add a new person to a tv series or add new information it gets only published on the persons name page but not on the title page for the tv series. How does that come about?

Andreas: Can you provide any examples? I think that does happen with uncredited crew members on a TV series (although I don't know if it's supposed to happen that way), but otherwise I usually don't see anything like that.

Yeah well. The other day I added Tom Bailey (II) as a new cast member to Sunset Beach but the edit has so far only appeared at his name page and not on Sunset Beachs title page. The same thing happened to James Rebhorn when I added a character for him on As the World Turns and now yesterday with Lee de Broux when I added the character for him on Sunset Beach.

You need to allow extra time for Credits to appear on the Series page.

Adding the credit to the Episode page is relatively simple; just build and export the single page. Since the data for the Series page is not actually stored in the database, it is necessary to spin through all the Episodes, 'rolling up' the credits. This is a (relatively) complex routine, and currently is not done until the overnight rebuild of the display pages.

Lee de Broux is now shown on the Full Cast & Crew page of Sunset Beach.

Tom Bailey (II) doesn't show up there yet, but the Episode credits haven't made it to the Update database yet, indicating the rebuild hasn't occurred since these 2 credits were approved. The credits should normally appear both in the database and the Series page at the same time, but it is possible that the Series page might take an extra 24 or 48 hours.
