Updates to the Ratings pages and functionality

Today we have made several updates to our Ratings pages and functionality. We have improved the design of the ratings details page to give it a cleaner, more modern look.

We have also made several changes, listed below. These changes only impact the Your Ratings page on the IMDb desktop Website. You may find much of this information by creating and running custom searches on the AdvancedTitle Search page. For example, to see comedy titles you have rated, sorted by your rating, see this advancedsearch. Or, to see titles you have rated that are in the IMDb Top250 list, see this advancedsearch.

What did we change?

1.     We removed the Compact list view. This was accessible from the far right icon (see A in the screen capture below). The grid view and detailed list view are still available.

2.     We updated the “Sort by” dropdown box. It now provides the two most popular choices: Most Recent (previously called Recently Rated) and Top Rated (previously Your Rating). Sort by: Your rating, Title A-Z, Release date (US),Number of votes, IMDb rating, and Popularity were removed. See B in the screen capture below.

3.     We removed the Refine ratings filters options from the Your Ratings page on the desktop site. See C in the screen capture below.

4.     We removed the Find More Titles tab. See D in the screen capture below.

5.     We removed the Recommended for You section on the User/Ratings page.

6.     We changed the format of data in the Ratings Export. You can export your ratings to Excel by clicking the new overflow menu (the 3 vertical dots) above your list in the updated experience, and choosing Export.

There are many ways to find new titles to watch. IMDb users can use Advanced Search, look through the recommendations for new titles to watch under People who liked this also liked... on any title page, or see Top Rated Movies.

Thank you for your continued support.

What happened to the vote history list? It now has images--which I don't want--and only two sort categories.  How do I get my old vote list back??

The new Advanced Title Search is powerful indeed, and I'm definitely going to use it, but it still doesn't compensate for the little advanced filters section in My Ratings page. That section provided all what I needed to go through my ratings history, and while I can reproduce the same using the Advanced Title Search, I lost much precious convenience. The actions I performed on My Ratings view didn't need all the extra power in the Advanced Title Search.

I had a tab pinned at My Ratings page for several years now.

Go through all the replies; it's clear that a large user base are unhappy about that.

Also there are some usability issues with the Advanced Title Search.

First of all, I can't easily update the filter while I'm on the results page. I have to go back to update it.

I accidently picked an item from "Lists | Include", and I couldn't reset it. I had to remove the specific query parameters from the URL myself in the results page.

And regarding to the actions I used to perform on My Ratings, I now have to navigate through a long list of filters to see the movies that I rated the highest, the list that took me two or three clicks to achieve on the old design.

Thanks for the feedback.

Updating filters directly on the results page is something we would look to support once all the software migrations are complete and we are back to updating the advanced search itself.

To unpick a selection on "Lists | Include" on a Windows machine you would hold the CTRL key and click it again;  this is a standard feature of all such lists on the web and not something specific to IMDb.

For all frequent actions, note that advanced title search results can be added to your browser bookmarks / favourites list (or whatever software you may use to save links online) for speedy access.  Personally I have an "IMDb searches" bookmark group containing all my frequent ATS results available at the click of a button.

Hope this helps.

Col, please tell me, how can I filter something like "show all my watched movies I rated with 7" with the advanced search. The only thing I could figure out was to show all my movies and scroll through thousand of titles till l reached the ones I rated with 7.

Also how can I easily switch the sorting in the result view between my ratings and user ratings? There is no option in the result view to sort by my ratings ;)

Do you believe this is more comfortable than with the old way to filter and sort your rated movies? I don't think so.

Oh, dear.  I don't think it's made entirely clear in the announcement, unless I missed it, that the Vote History page is now, indeed, *a* *page* with "load more" being the sole navigation option.  That could get to be a mighty big page, pretty darned quick, what with all those graphics to load to everything.  Ha. Ha. Ha.
Yes, yes, I know: Use advanced search.  Export your data.  Your spreadsheet can't sort our date format properly?  Write a little script to convert it.  Easy Peasy.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Changes in 'Rating by Demographics', are counter productive..

The earlier design, in which bars were displayed/used to show ratings of different demographics was more intuitive/useful, as you could get the idea just by seeing the length of different bars. Now, just numbers are displayed, which are less intuitive visibly.

I don't always end up at my ratings page every day but today with the recent release of a new Call of Duty game I went there to see which ones I have rated and thus played in the past and what do I see.  There is no way to sort by title and look for all the Call of Duties or to be able to just filter out video games, but there is no way to do that now from the ratings page.

I would first like to dissect the initial post and some of Col's replies made on this page.

"We have improved the design of the ratings details page to give it a cleaner, more modern look."

This is just a bold face lie and a middle finger to everyone who has been coming to this site for years.  What you have done is remove about 90 percent of the functionality of this page.  Out of the 6 changes you made to the page 5 of the them were removals of functionality and there was not one benefit added to the page at all.

"The interface becomes more simple for new customers; we no longer embed advanced title search features into a ratings page; and we can centralize the software on the advanced title search page, which in turns means 50% less software to maintain." (from one of Col's replies)

Ah the new customer excuse.  Hmm where have we seen this one before, oh yes I remember this was an excuse made when you removed all the message boards.  I am sorry but that excuse does not work for message boards nor does it work for this.

First of all you must think new users to this site are idiots who don't know how to use filtering menus or be able to actually browse message boards and choose the subjects they are interested.  Just to let people know the real reason they got rid off message boards is because they did not want to pay people to monitor them and Amazon the owners of IMDB only care about one thing CASH.

I have been a member of IMDB for 17 years and have rated over 4500 items.  The filter menus helped me easily sort through all those rated items to find the group of movie, tv shows or video games I wanted to see that I rated.  This also means the "new user" excuse is getting very old on me.

But wait you say here comes Advanced Title Search a bloated and cumbersome search function that is way more complicated for new and existing users to figure out how to use.  What used to take mere seconds to do will now take minutes.  In order to change the search parameters on Advanced Title Search you have to constantly move back to the search page and reenter all the parameters and it does not even display the date the movie was rated any longer.  Col said in a post if you want to see that you have to extract the list to an excel spreadsheet and manipulate that way.  Nice going IMDB that is really improving customer service.

Almost everything the development team changes for IMDB is for the worse.

  • Of course most recently the terrible changes to the Ratings page.
  • The removal of message boards
  • The changes in the basic layout of movie pages which basically hides things like release dates, FAQ, etc...
  • Years ago IMDB used to have the Latest News section near the top of the main page but three quarters the way down the page they had links to external sites about anything and everything to do with movies.  They got rid of that section also.
  • I am sure there are dozens of other terrible changes made to this site that people could list here.
If IMDB development staff were to run a banking website they would remove the ability to pay bills online saying it would be way more convenient for the customer to go into the bank and pay all their bills there.

What is wrong with you people at IMDB.  Why do you keep making coming to this website a worse experience for the user.  I think it is because you think that there is nothing you can do to make this website crash and burn, you think you are untouchable.  I am sure that is what Pets.com, PanAm and Blockbuster also thought about their companies.

This is a less and less loyal user waiting to see the next catastrophic change you make to this website.

But new users aren't an excuse.  New users like lots of images, and the clean, new design gives highest emphasis to the Amazon click-thru link, which earns revenue.

Futzing around with complicated filtering gewgaws doesn't.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled List of the titles I rated.

Up until one or two days ago, when I clicked on "See all XXXX ratings" on my profile I would then be able to sort my ratings after different categories or filter them according to genres or Feature Film/TV Show/etc.
These features are now all gone. Yes I get to see a complete list of all my ratings but I can't do anything with it. Please don't take these functionalities away. :( They were really handy and I liked playing around with them a lot.

Am I blind or did you really remove it? Now It's impossible for me to find a movie I've watched years ago, considering I've rated more then 700 titles. Please do something about it.

Col, I understand what you are saying about the functionality being baked into the advanced search. However, it is a far more difficult, convoluted way to do it. The great thing about the filters was that I could say Tv shows that are comedies, and then when that returned a big list I could further narrow by date > 2000 or switch to movies to compare. Now if I want to refine results I have to go back to the search, look through all of the parameters for what I want and reset everything. That is not a solution.

What a horrible change! And to proudly announce it like it is some sort of improvement just goes to show how out of touch you are.
At least be honest about it and say it is an obvious downgrade in functionality. This blatant lying when both sides know the truth is just infuriating.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled How do I add movies to my lists after the last update?.

After the recent changes in the look and functionality of  the "Your ratings" page, I'm no longer able to add movies to my custom lists (only the Watchlist).

Am I missing something, or is this function completely gone from IMDb?

Another downgrade and the consequences will be seen in time.
What I noticed after forums removal? Seems a lot of contributors lost their interest and left. And the greediness will have opposite effects than the ones expected. You will need to hire more and more people to do what was done for free. And how do I know this? I see more and more movies without updated status. For example imdb says "filming" and the movie is already on bluray/cinema/online lol.
This "upgrade" is a nightmare. I hope the ones who did it will be fired.

We have improved the design of the ratings details page to give it a cleaner, more modern look.
No, just like last year, you've made everything worse. Imdb has been going downhill since then, gradually you are downgrading everything. We thought the removal of the boards was the last straw, but as we see now, there was more in store. The boards were supposed to be replaced by something better, but nothing came. So what was said back then was true: to stop negative feedback you couldn't control, you stopped people from discussing movies altogether.

More modern look... What's striking about the new interface is not its modernity, it's its inefficiency. We can't navigate through the rating pages, we have to load all the ratings on the same page. This is a database, not Twitter, for Pete's sake! And whether it's Imdb or Twitter, extensive loading always ends up being too heavy for JavaScript and our computer's resources.

Pictures are also slower to load, they load after scrolling. There's no readily available refining functions. And what's the point of an "add to watchlist" button for movies we've rated, thus necessarily watched?! This makes zero sense! Ratings are now almost like a normal list.

The only positive thing I can think of is the green star when checking someone else's list, it's a little better, but the old way was legible too.

You might be optimizing Imdb's back-end processes, but on the users' ends, it's certainly no improvement.

Well then. The biggest reason why I bother rating movies, is because I like to look back at my viewing history, search by a genre and a time period and then sort by how I've rated them. I tried this with the advanced title search, but there is no option to sort by my own ratings.....

Guess it's time to make the full switch to letterboxd.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Engineers Love to Change Things!.

The title of this post is a line exclaimed by Dr. McCoy in 1980's Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I don't have much to say other than to lament these latest bone-headed and ill-considered changes to the site by IMDb management. I come to this site to keep track of movies and television shows - the ones I've watched and the ones I want to watch - and that's it. This cleaner, more modern look is a disaster as far as I'm concerned - and that's coming from a guy who felt the need to comment on the goings-on here only once or twice before. One of my favorite things to do here is rate what I've watched and then add those rated items to my lists. The draining of the functionality from the Ratings Page has robbed me of that joy. Why in heaven's name did you feel the need to eliminate the Compact List? If these idiot changes aren't soon reversed there'll be no reason to continue coming here and all my efforts to rate what I've viewed and make some contribution to this site will have been for naught. The verdict is clearly in; no one but no one likes these changes and if the management continues to insist on them like petty Soviet bureaucrats hoarding foodstuffs while the countryside starves, then the site will soon, like the Soviet Union and other websites that didn't heed the concerns of its users, find itself in the dustbin of history.

Guys, just realize that removing the Refine ratings filters options from the Your Ratings page is ridiculous. It's not easier now like you said, it's much complicated to look through our ratings via Advanced Search.
I'm thinking about not using imdb anymore after over 10 years. You just made a mistake, people are not satisfied. Just put back Refine ratings filters. @Karen @ColNeedham

Hello, I have a problem in "Your ratings" section. There is no filter option at the moment, I can't select years, genres, media type... Now it's just a list of ratings which you can see as "most recent" or "Top rated", no filters anymore... Is that some error at the website or what? Somebody have the same problem?

Please put back the refine ratings feature or at least add another feature thta lets me see how many of my Ratings are TV Episodes / Feature Films and so on like the old feature was able to. Everything is just a giant List now and yeah the new feature lets me search that List but I cant find any way that gives me an overview of what is in that List like before.
