Updates to the Ratings pages and functionality

Today we have made several updates to our Ratings pages and functionality. We have improved the design of the ratings details page to give it a cleaner, more modern look.

We have also made several changes, listed below. These changes only impact the Your Ratings page on the IMDb desktop Website. You may find much of this information by creating and running custom searches on the AdvancedTitle Search page. For example, to see comedy titles you have rated, sorted by your rating, see this advancedsearch. Or, to see titles you have rated that are in the IMDb Top250 list, see this advancedsearch.

What did we change?

1.     We removed the Compact list view. This was accessible from the far right icon (see A in the screen capture below). The grid view and detailed list view are still available.

2.     We updated the “Sort by” dropdown box. It now provides the two most popular choices: Most Recent (previously called Recently Rated) and Top Rated (previously Your Rating). Sort by: Your rating, Title A-Z, Release date (US),Number of votes, IMDb rating, and Popularity were removed. See B in the screen capture below.

3.     We removed the Refine ratings filters options from the Your Ratings page on the desktop site. See C in the screen capture below.

4.     We removed the Find More Titles tab. See D in the screen capture below.

5.     We removed the Recommended for You section on the User/Ratings page.

6.     We changed the format of data in the Ratings Export. You can export your ratings to Excel by clicking the new overflow menu (the 3 vertical dots) above your list in the updated experience, and choosing Export.

There are many ways to find new titles to watch. IMDb users can use Advanced Search, look through the recommendations for new titles to watch under People who liked this also liked... on any title page, or see Top Rated Movies.

Thank you for your continued support.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled My ratings.

Hello, i just have one question. In the section “My ratings”, IMDB deleted the feature that showed us how many movies we ever watched. I rate movies, tv shows and episodes of tv shows, and i could make the distinction between them all, and it was a good way of tracking my history. Now they appear all together as usual, but i can’t search in separate. Anyway IMDB could bring this feature back? And for example, the “My watchlist” section still has it, we can see the list by type.

I'm sure the features you're missing will come back eventually. Until then, though, you can use the Advanced Title Search for those purposes. For instance, if you want to see only the feature films you've rated, you check of "Feature Film" at the top of the form, then "Restrict to Titles I've Seen" near the bottom, and if you want you can also choose the sorted by "Your rating (High to Low)" at the end of the form. This would give you this URL as a result: http://www.imdb.com/search/title?title_type=feature&my_ratings=restrict&sort=my_ratings,desc. You can likewise get results also for TV shows, TV episodes, and several other criteria.

Hi @sss sss. We aren't working on bringing that back right now, but I will add it to our list for future consideration. Thanks for suggesting.

Hi @bderoes. Thanks for your continued feedback. The page design is still a little in flux as we continue to make updates; the placement isn't final.

Good to hear the placement isn't final.

As Larry Yoshida points out, having this data here has limited use without the Refine and Sort features of a custom list.

I have always had to keep an Export of my ratings on my laptop just to answer the question "when did I see this film last?" If the date of rating were shown on the title page, that would be very useful. So would showing it on a custom list (#6). But hopefully always with an eye to keep the display as small as possible without confusion.

P.S. I'm glad to see you're providing weekly status reports, and especially that you did so before Friday so you can respond to comments more quickly.

Hi Karen,

It's sad to hear and see that the date you are publishing or providing, is the date when I rated a title, THE LAST TIME. Instead, you should provide the date when a user rated the title for THE FIRST TIME. This is for two reasons:-
  • This functionality is not properly implemented. There is a bug. So, if I just visit a title which I have already rated in d past without changing or even touching the rating, the system takes it as if or assumes that, I've rated the title again. So, the title appears top on the list of my ratings when sorted by date of rating.
  • Many times it happens that I change my rating for a title. So, the date when I rated the title for the first time, will provide me with a very useful information and that is the date or approximate period/time when I watched the title for the very first time.
Hoping this will be changed for the good,
Thanks.

I don't find that the date of rating changes just because I visit the title page. You say you're not doing anything to make the voting stars come up, tapping on the former rating, and therefore registering a new date? Are you using Reference view, or an app on a phone/tablet? (I use Standard view on a laptop.)

I disagree that the rating date displayed should always be the first date. If I've changed my rating, I want to know the date of the current rating. I _would_ be interested in both dates: original and current. However, I doubt that IMDb keeps the original rating number, and without that, the original date is the less valuable of the two... for me.

On the Ratings page, filter by rating does NOT sort by date, despite the Sort choice saying Most Recent.

By looking through my recent ratings (without selecting a Filter value), I find 4 films that I rated 8 in the last month. But when I select Filter by rating 8, these do not appear at the top of the list, and the top 3 entries have rated dates in 2014, 2006, 2012.

Filtering by a single rating seems pointless, usually it makes sense to filter by a range of ratings (min: 6, max: 10, for example), like in the Advanced search. The inconsistency of filtering between the search, lists and ratings is very confusing.

Also the current capitalization style (camelCase) of URL parameters clashes with the old IMDb style (snake_case): /ratings?sort=date_added,desc&ratingFilter=6

This is inconvenient because often the lack of a capable UI for filtering/sorting forces me to edit or add those parameters manually, and mixing two styles makes it much harder.

I see more changes today: that an icon for Grid View is included and functional.

Also that when you select a rating value to filter, the box regarding "Most Recent" is eliminated, and the titles are displayed in random order. Hopefully this is not the permanent version of the page, because the random order is the primary problem, not that it was advertised as being in order.

New Bug: I tried to find a title in my Ratings today, to see when I rated it. To speed up the process, I switched to Grid View to find the title, thinking I'd be able to switch to Detail View when I got to the page. But tapping on that grayed-out icon does Nothing. This is too many flavors of ridiculous wrapped in one PITA: only 1 place to advance to Next page,  random order of titles, inability to switch view modes, only 2 ways to see the date reviewed (export and random ratings view; need it on custom lists and on Title page.) Fortunately, it dawned on me to delete the view mode from the url, and refresh, which worked.

The grayed-out Detail View was in Chrome on a Chromebook, with extensions/scripts OFF.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Ratings breakdown to Features vs TV shows.

On the Ratings-page, there used to be a filter you could use to seperate TV shows, Episodes, Feature Films etc, so I could see how many movies I've rated vs how many tv shows. Now it appears to be gone. Where did this feature go?

Hi everyone. One small announcement for the week ending Feb 16. We updated the dual sort/filter drop downs that were causing some confusion last week. You can now filter by Show All and choose to sort by Most Recent or Top Rated OR you can filter by a specific star rating.

We are continuing to work on additional updates to Ratings and I will announce those once they are available.

Just to let you know about some bugs that I've found.
I noticed that you have restored the Grid View, but when using it, movie cards DO NOT appear past page 1, so it is impossible to see any information for films that are on page 2 and subsequents. Also, sometimes the switching between Detail and Grid View happens not to work.
Hope this helps.

Either I don't understand what you mean, or I'm not able to duplicate what you report with this:
Grid View, but when using it, movie cards DO NOT appear past page 1,
Grid View only shows movie posters, not movie cards (I believe that's what IMDb calls the Detail view information), and I can see subsequent pages of posters in Grid View.

But if I start in Detail View, go to the second page of ratings still in Detail View, then switch to Grid View, it displays the Grid for the first page of ratings, not the second page. However, going to the Next page within Grid View does give different movies than on page 1.

I'd call it a bug that switching to Grid View beyond page 1 results in being sent BACK to page 1.

A few days ago I posted the bug about not being able to switch from Grid view to Detail view here:
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/updates-to-the-ratings-pages-and-functionality?topic-reply-l...
and haven't heard back from IMDb staff. Hopefully we'll hear back about both bugs.

In Grid View, when you move the mouse cursor over a movie poster, the respective movie card appears, displaying various info on the film. And as far as I've seen, this only works on page 1, but is completely lost on pages 2 and so on.

That's what I was reporting. ;-)

Thanks for the clarification. I was not aware of that feature. It takes a while for the pop-up to appear. It seems they wait to draw the box until its contents are ready, while the Ways to Watch pop-up for Showtimes/Video/Disc availability draws the box first and then fills it.

I can confirm your report that the movie card pop-ups only appear on the first page, and add to it:
They ONLY appear when you've freshly turned on Grid View. If you stay on page 1 and simply Refresh the page, the pop-ups no longer appear either.

And because of the other bug (reported two posts above), that requesting Grid View on any page takes you back to the first page of titles, that means, at the moment, you can only see the movie cards for the first 100 titles.

This behavior is the same whether extensions/scripts are on or off, in Chrome on a Chromebook, and Firefox on Windows 10.

Because something else went bad with Ratings view, I added the Movie Card complaint to the thread below (actually, I wasn't sure that it hadn't been fixed and re-broken):
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/grid-view-and-descending-order-not-working?utm_source=notifi...

And 3 days later, Movie Cards now pop up in Grid View on any page that I tested.

That likely means that no staffer took the information you and I posted here on 19Feb and sent it to developers. So if you have any bugs to report, I'd advise starting a new thread, not adding to this one.

For people want to restore compact view: Replace "grid" with "simple" in url to create compact view. Replace "detail" with "simple" in url to create compact view. Sorting ratings reverts to detail/grid views, simply replace with "simple" and voila.

Thanks, TemporaryOne.
This is good stuff, especially since
  1. the Simple View is an un-advertised feature (no button yet; I hope they keep the View thumbnail-free), and
  2. changing mode via the URL while you're on a page beyond 1 works (and the button is dead right now during Grid mode), meaning you actually change mode on the page of ratings where you request it and don't get bounced back to page 1. (See my bug report above.)
However, the pop-up movie card does not appear beyond page 1 using this method either.

I'm disappointed that no IMDb staff has acknowledged the bugs reported here last week by Fabio G. and expanded upon by me below it. Perhaps we should only report bugs on individual threads nowadays?

Thank you for radicalizing the your rating page and taking away most of the awesome features like the nimble list view. Heck, I'cant even separate between TV and Movie titles in the page. Been with you for like four years , since started watching non-Indian movies. Found an alternative site with almost the same features , and even had an option to import from here. Sooo.... Bye
Thanks for the previous rating page which helped me a lot in recollecting as well as recomending movies to othrs in a jiffy. I know you guys will counter by saying use advanced search and all but..... still too bulky.

Hope you make a lote of money from the pro version

Thanks

Please see the official replies on this thread for details on the progress on updating the ratings feature.

In the meantime, there are many alternatives outlined on https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/tutorial-workarounds which show how to use the site to generate more powerful / useful reports than ever before.

For example, your most recent ratings of movies only -> http://www.imdb.com/search/title?title_type=feature&my_ratings=restrict&count=250&sort=y...

The same for TV-series only -> http://www.imdb.com/search/title?title_type=tv_series&my_ratings=restrict&sort=your_rating_d...

When I click on my name on the right-hand side of the page, from the drop-down menu is "Your Ratings". I click on it and it takes me to all my ratings. I use to be able to refine my ratings based on type of film, genre etc. The refine option is no longer available. Why is this so?

What sense does it make to remove the refine ratings filter??? I only went to that page for that reason. Why would you create LESS functionality??? Why fix something that isn't broken? The page is useless now. Bring back the Refine option please.

"Why fix something that isn't broken?" The individual feature indeed was not broken, but it is possible that the system it depended upon was broken. Not to worry, as it seems like the greatest features of the old system will be ported to the new system.

The rating list is one of my favorite features for many different reasons. Yet I am missing the sorting checkboxes. Hi everyone. Thanks for your patience and feedback as we've released Ratings features over the past 3 months. This sounds like bad news. It seems you're not actively updating the Ratings page any more, is that right?
Also, you say that ideas can be added to the Idea section, does that mean the ideas and suggestions mentioned in this thread that haven't been acted upon yet won't get acted upon at all?

Some of the Ratings enhancement requests were recorded here:
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/ratings-functionality-enhancement-requests
Votes and/or comments are welcome there.

User Jeorj Euler has frequently expressed optimism in this thread that some former functionality was going to return, perhaps based on this post by  Karen, Official Rep on 19Jan:

which said in part:

Ideas for the long term:

Why did you remove the REFINE feature? I'm sitting here trying to understand the reason for it. The only reason I went to my ratings page was so I could sort them and answer questions my friends asked, like "How many documentaries have you seen" "How many short films have u watched". IMDb is suppose to be improving and adding new features. Why delete a PERFECT feature that EVERYONE likes? Look how many people have voiced their opinion on this topic. I have been using IMDb for 10+ years and have never had an issue before this. I use this site every day. The ratings page has no use now. I hardly visit it now.

You can do all this and much more via advanced title search at https://www.imdb.com/search/title

For example, as mentioned above, all the documentaries you have seen, sorted by your vote @ https://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=documentary&my_ratings=restrict&sort=my_ratings,des...

If you are interested in simple analysis and genre counts then see the "Ratings Analysis" widget on the right of Your Activity page which can be reached from the menu in the upper right of every IMDb page; direct link is https://www.imdb.com/profile (and click the "See more" under the "By Year" section for the genre analysis)

How are users who are on their profile page or their "Your Ratings" page supposed to know this? They look at their ratings, see some options and probably think that that's it.
