The guidelines for external video links requires us to include the video format in the description:

How does one determine the format of a YouTube or Vimeo video?

Is this a necessary requirement?

Both YouTube and Vimeo format their videos to fit normal widescreen displays, since most screens today are in a 16:9 format. In other words all videos on those sites are 16:9, or 1.78:1. For videos uploaded in different aspect ratios than that, the blacks on either the sides (4:3 videos) or at top and bottom (2.35:1) of the screen are part of the video signal; the actual videos are all in 16:9 format on those sites.

Sorry, misread the question. The format of the videos on those sites are Flash. The guidelines even say as much.

The guidelines I linked to include an example of a YouTube link described as Flash, but also a Vimeo link labeled as QuickTime.

It's a valid point -- most of those sites used to offer Flash video only but now actually stream content in different formats depending on the video capabilities and resolution of the receiving browser/device. I think we may have to revisit those guidelines accordingly. I'll raise the question with the right people and will let you know.

A valid point indeed. Those guidelines are outdated. I've initiated a change in vetting policy, when complete I'll update the guidelines and format will no longer be required.
