The green checkmark only shows when the title is already in the Watchlist, like this:
Immediately after checking the Watchlist button on a title NOT already in the Watchlist, I see the title shuffled out of the way, darkened and checked, like this:
When I tap on that greyed-out title, it puts it back to the large size and displays its description, but the location of the checkmark just shows a spinning progress wheel, barely visible here:
Refreshing the page makes the checkmark display properly for The Pirate. I was not able to use that button to remove The Pirate from the Watchlist until I refreshed.
I did not have any trouble with being asked to login. I'm using Chrome 66 on a chromebook.
