The "bunch of symbols" you are  seeing are html control codes. They are instructions in text files on the internet that tell browsers how to display the text.

<br>  causes a line break,  so <br><br> will end a paragraph, then leave a blank line
<font color="blue"> tells the browser to display the following text in blue until it gets to a </font>

HTML is used on this board, so if I use the buttons to add italics to a phrase,  what is actually stored is <i>add italics to a phrase</i>.

I am not sure exactly where you are seeing this, but I am guessing it is in your User Profile (the URL for this has /user/ in it). If you copied and pasted from an html file, that may be the problem. Some areas don't accept html, and in these cases if the control codes are entered the system changes them behind the scenes so that <br> is changed to &lt;br>. The browser knows to change the &lt; back to < after it has checked for controls but before it displays it.

Since you didn't supply the URL of the page in question, I can't look at it and check if this is what happened or if there is an actual error.

If my guess is correct, you just need to remove the control codes; however, if you are talking about a Name page rather than a User Profile, there may be a very different problem.

Hi,

I'm not seeing the problem on your boards profile or your "user" page:

http://www.imdb.com/user/ur17158230/

Is it still happening for you?

I can see the problem, and it appears I may have been correct. This is what the start of the page is intended to look like, according to the code (with the addition that the title "Movies" should be purple, and "Fave Shows" blue).

Top 10's:

Movies:

1. Stand By Me

2. Forrest Gump

3. Girl, Interrupted

4. The Hunger Games

5. Twilight

6. Pineapple Express

7. Mean Girls

8. Halloween

9. The Breakfast Club

10. The Punisher

Fave shows:

1. Supernatural

2. The Walking Dead

. . .

The problem is that the Board does not accept HTML codes, but rather uses a Board code format instead. This is similar to the html codes but uses [ and ] instead of < and >, plus other changes.

I think the following is more or less what you want. (I have removed the extra spaces between lines, you can re-enter them if desired with the Enter key.)

Top 10's:
[purple]Movies:[/purple]
1. Stand By Me
2. Forrest Gump
3. Girl, Interrupted
4. The Hunger Games
5. Twilight
6. Pineapple Express
7. Mean Girls
8. Halloween
9. The Breakfast Club
10. The Punisher

[blue]Fave shows:[/blue]
1. Supernatural
2. The Walking Dead
3. Lost
4. Breaking Bad
5. Dexter
6. One Tree Hill
7. Game of Thrones
8. Survivor
9. Sons of Anarchy
10. Big Brother

[orange]Bands:[/orange]
1. Nirvana
2. Hole
3. Paramore
4. No Doubt
5. Garbage
6. Seether
7. Fleetwood Mac
8. Bush
9. Panic at the Disco
10. Fall Out Boy

If you just copy the above data and paste it into your Boards Bio in place of what is there, it should work.

Wow, very interesting -- I can reproduce the problem, but only in Internet Explorer.  It renders as it's supposed to in Firefox and Chrome.  I'll take a look at this next week, but it's bizarre.

I use Firefox, and I see the code just as she does.  I am currently running version 32.0.2, and I have a number of add-ons, but I don't think they should affect this.

I also checked IE (11.0.12) and Safari (5.1.7) both of which showed the code.

Only Chrome ( 37.0.2062.120 m) showed formatted data, but when I returned to check the version number, it only showed the code. Very bizarre indeed.
