Monday night: Titanic (1997).  First time in seemingly forever.  Still hate this movie so much.  Finally gotten around to watching it with the RiffTrax commentary:

Oh, someone else who hates that movie as much as I do. Among other flaws, most fundamental, I think, is that it is so poorly written: everything from overarching plot to the dialogue was awful.  I wonder how Cameron and company got such a talented cast, from Winslet to Victor Garber, together and then I remember that the character actors can't depend on continued paychecks necessarily and Winslet was a relative unknown at the time. Even DiCaprio wasn't anywhere close to being "Leo" to the masses yet. Infinitely more mysterious is its Oscars and the positive reception by so many critics. The only redeeming thing about this movie is that it enabled its leads to call the shots in their careers thereafter and both have made mostly excellent choices in films ever since. After your post, I really want to see the Riffrax commentary.

I'm currently watching the 1983 James Bond film "Octopussy", which I recorded on my D.V.R. Cable-TV system earlier in the day.  As you know, July is the month where they air all the "Bond" movies on all the movie channels all month-long, and I recorded "Octopussy" because it happens to be one of my favorites in the "Bond" series, even more so now with the recent passing of its main star, Roger Moore.  In fact, I can honestly say that this movie gets better and better every time it's shown, but that's only my humble opinion.

10 Cloverfield Lane (re-watch) - 9/10
The Big Lebowski (re-watch) - 7/10 - I'm far less in love with this film than about a million other people...

Das Boot (1981) - Director's cut version of 200 min. It takes some effort but once you've gone through it you already feel claustrophobic from getting into the bathtub - 9/10

The Magnificent Seven - 7/10 - I liked many of the individual parts, but it just didn't come all together. Seemed like they had good intentions.

No worries, saw it about a month ago and LOVED it. Same rating as you too. It was an extremely clever satirical horror that really went above and beyond the boundaries you'd expect the genre to be confined by. Great debut by Peele!

Deja Vu - 7/10 - I'd give this a 6.5 if it were possible...interesting premise but I couldn't follow the "science" - seems from the trivia as if perhaps the original script covered it better.

The Beguiled (2017): at least 7/10. That rating might very well go up: I'm still sitting with the nuanced  film to what is distilled.

Oh, I just noticed a typo in my post: I'm still sitting with the nuanced film to see what is distilled. (At this point, about two weeks after seeing it, I'd still give it a 7.)

I haven't seen either. I'm kind of debating which to see first...or if I should watch either at all. I love Sofia Coppola and I've heard only good things about the new version but...

LAST NIGHT:

The Brand New Testament (2015): An absurdist religious satire set in Brussels, featuring a rebellious 10 year daughter of God and whacky Amélie-esque (2001)  narrative ensues.  Rated 8/10.

Maudie (2016) - 'About a 7. Last night after I saw it, I was thinking 8 but, as I've thought about it, there are a few missteps, for lack of a better word, that takes it to a 7, which I consider to be a very good rating. It's quite resonant and visually beautiful; I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't need a lot of dialogue or action.

Seasons three of Fargo - 9/10 - just when I think there is no way a new season could measure up to the ones I loved in the past, it does! Excellent - so much fun and many surprises. And I loved seeing Mr. Wrench come back on the show.

Jurassic World - 7/10 - yawn! I think I'm too jaded and/or have seen too much CGI to be blown away by this.Nothing can match the feeling of seeing the dinosaurs for the first time (and all throughout the movie) from the original Jurassic Park. And I'm getting sick of Chris Pratt's "cocky hot guy badass" routine, though he *did* pull it back towards the end.
Die Höhle des gelben Hundes (The Cave of the Yellow Dog) - 8/10 - basically following the everyday lives of a family of Mongolian nomads, but so so interesting! The scene where they dismantle their entire house and head out with all their possessions on wagons to find a new spot is so amazing; it's worth it to see the film just for that section.
The Horse Whisperer - 7/10 - too long! If the story warrants it, fine. This one did not.

Season 3 of The Strain - this season: 6/10, past seasons: 9/10, averaged to 7/10 - very disappointing end of the season. Eph should have shot his asshole kid long ago.

The 33 - 7/10 - WAY overacted, the two best parts were Rodrigo Santoro's understated performance and Antonio Banderas's "still hot at 55" abs. The film didn't hold my interest enough to keep from constantly wondering why they used so many white actors in Hispanic parts. :(

Old Joy - 7/10 - more like a feeling than an actual story. I could really feel the places in the film but I've spent time in both Portland and the country surrounding it. Not sure if someone who'd never been there would have the same reaction. At the beginning and the end there was some obnoxious right wing talk radio playing over the car radio, but it wasn't playing when they got away from the city. Probably a purposeful decision to differentiate the quiet coolness of the woods from the more chaotic city.
