When We Rise - no episode 1.8 exists (i.e. it is a seven part series)

The television miniseries When We Rise (tt5292622) only has seven episodes. Some eager contributor keeps on adding an episode 1.8 which does not exist. Episode 1.8 should be deleted (I merged a previous episode 1.8 with no information into episode 1.7, but thought I'd bring it to staff attention so that 1.8 is not added again).

The seven parts are listed as such on ABC's website, it the broadcast network.

Gene: I didn't watch the miniseries, so I don't know the broadcast details myself. But how it was originally broadcast will make a difference as to how the episodes are counted.

The IMDb policy (http://www.imdb.com/help/search?domain=helpdesk_faq&index=2&file=episode) says:
Episode parts: Some programs air two-part episodes from time to time. If the two parts are clearly separated (separate titles or a separate title card), then they should be entered as two separate episodes (with "Part 1/Part 2" on the end of the title if they don't have unique titles). If they are run together as one long episode on original airing (with one set of credits), then they should be treated as a single episode, even if they are separated in reruns, syndication, or other later airings.
I know that "When We Rise" was shown on four nights, with a two-hour broadcast each night. Did they actually run a set of credits at the end of each hour (at least Wednesday through Friday) of the program, rather than having a single set of closing credits each night?

If, as the ABC post you linked implies, there was one set of credits the first night, then two sets of credits for each of the three remaining nights, then I would agree that the show should be listed as 7 episodes.

But if there was only one set of credits for each of the four nights, which is what I would have expected, then the show should be listed as only 4 episodes.

I'm a little late to this discussion but I'm currently watching the mini-series. I've watched the first night and scanned the other nights and there is a single set of credits for each night. In fact, on the on-screen guide, they are labeled as "Night I", "Night II". There are no opening credits an hour into the 2 hour block indicating that they are separate episodes. There is one opening credit at the beginning and one at the end.

According to the IMDb policy, this should be 4 episodes and should probably be renamed "Night I" through "Night IV". The question is how do we make this happen and get it through the IMDb editors.

As seen from a different ABC link, there are only 4 videos to watch this mini-series.

Hi Adrian,

When you say you are currently watching the show did you record the initial airing? We wouldn't want to suggest merging the episodes if this isn't the initial airing.

Yes. This is the initial (and as far as I know, only) airing of the miniseries. After watching the first night, I came here to see if anyone had commented on the odd number of episodes. After reading this thread, I checked Night 2 and there were no credits midway through the episode. I haven't looked at Night 3 and Night 4 yet but I doubt they are different. I can check them in a little while.

All four nights had no credits between the first and second hours, but for whatever reason ABC and the production company had listed the first night as one episode, and every subsequent night they had the two hours listed as two separate episodes.
Night I: Episode 1.1
Night II: Episode 1.2 and 1.3
Night III: Episode 1.4 and 1.5
Night IV: Episode 1.6 and 1.7

According to the episode guide, these should be treated as single episodes (since they have a single set of credits and from what I've seen no title card or any other indication between the parts).

Forgot to mention in the end credits for nights II< II and IV, there were some crew responsibilities that were designated to the two separate episodes for that evening, such as the writing, directing and editing credits (if memory serves me correctly).

Hi Gene,

Did you see the initial airing? Do you remember whether there were credits in between the 2 episodes shown back to back each night?

Hi everyone,

In that case then yes, we should only have the 4 episodes listed. Given your knowledge of the series are you ok to go in and submit the merges and amend the episode names linking to this thread?

Regards,
Will

I can do the merge but if I understand the process correctly, I need to correct the titles of episode 2, 4 and 6 first (to Night II, Night III and Night IV respectively) and then wait 24 hours for that change to take effect before trying to merge episodes 3, 5 and 7 in to the other episodes. (Episode 1 only needs a title change to Night I). Does this sound about right?

On second thought, maybe the seven episodes is correct. Yesterday, I just fast forwarded to the middle of the 2 hour block of the second night to see if there were credits in the middle. I'm now actually watching the second night. There are separate credits for things like "teleplay by" and "story by". (There are probably some separate credits at the end of the 2 hour block but I'm not there yet.) However, there is only a single cast list. I've always been a little confused about where this falls because it isn't covered in the episode guide.

Hi all,

This is a confusing one! Our policy states:

"Episode parts: Some programs air two-part episodes from time to time. If the two parts are clearly separated (separate titles or a separate title card), then they should be entered as two separate episodes (with "Part 1/Part 2" on the end of the title if they don't have unique titles). If they are run together as one long episode on original airing (with one set of credits), then they should be treated as a single episode, even if they are separated in reruns, syndication, or other later airings."

So I guess the real point here is were the 2 episodes that aired on the night "clearly separated", which is hard for us to establish without having seen the episodes as they aired originally. Was the intro to the show played on the second episode or was there another title card on screen? Adrian when you say that they were credits in the middle do you mean an end crawl at the end of one episode or credits along the bottom when the "second" episode started?

Once we have a few more details we will be able to tell you the best way to represent the content.

Will,

There is no intro to this show. It is a mini-series, so it doesn't have a traditional opening of a TV show. There is only one set of credits but it is clearly delineated for crew members that there are two parts of the episode. For example, in Night 2, the halves are written by different individuals.

There are no credits midway through the 2 hour block. So there are credits in the beginning and credits at the end, though some of the credits are clearly listed as belonging to only one part.

Also, it is fairly clear where the second episode of the night starts. There's nothing onscreen but you can tell where one story line ends and another begins with the next hour.

Hi Adrian,

Given the above I think we should consider this as one episode, not two as it isn't clearly separated by a title card or intro etc. therefore we should only have 4 episodes to reflect the original airing with specific credits as they appear on screen to delineate the parts in the filmo credits.

So yes Adrian can you please submit the episode merge linking to this thread by following the steps you mentioned above? Once this has been accepted please can you amend the filmo items to how they appear on screen to help clarify the parts?

Thanks,
Will

That is going to be a mess of credits to clean up once they are merged into a single episode to delineate which credits go with which parts. I guess I'm up to as I haven't deleted the parts I've watched off the DVR yet.

I admit I will be of no help in this matter as I watched the miniseries during its original broadcast several months ago, and as I live in Canada I have never had access to the videos on such platforms as ABC's website or Hulu (if they still do exist on either).

Will, it looks like someone outside this conversation has taken it upon themselves to rename the episode. So, now there is Night I through Night IV but also Part V, VI and VII. I'm not sure what happened since this conversation started! I'll just request through the help desk to delete the parts and I'll fix up the existing nights.

It looks like it has happened in the last 24 hours, I know which episodes need to be merged but the name that appears on the main page like "Night III" still shows as "Part III". I'm afraid if I attempt the merge right now it won't go through right as the names don't match. I'll try again tomorrow.

It looks like the merge is still straightforward once the names get sorted out. Someone renamed Part III to Night III (it's not. It's the second part of Night II) and Part IV to night IV (it's not. It's the first part of Night III). I'll fix it once these changes look the same on the edit page as the main page.

Adrian and Will:

On an associated topic, I am wondering if it makes more sense when after the merge the four episodes are named:
Episode 1.1: Part I
Episode 1.2: Parts II and III
Episode 1.3: Parts IV and V
Episode 1.4: Parts VI and VII

In doing so, it still retains the "Parts" as distinguished by the production company and distributor (and this is how the Nights are listed on ABC's website), and makes it clearer when those writing credits that are different for each Part of the same Night can be classified.

Thoughts?

While that might make the credits easier to understand, it may confuse people that watch it as the TV guide refers to them as Nights. Hulu also shows 4 episodes as "Nights". I would guess this is how the eventual home video will show them as well. This might be cumbersome but maybe accurate?

Episode 1.1: Night I: Part I
Episode 1.2: Night II: Parts II and III
Episode 1.3: Night III: Parts IV and V
Episode 1.4: Night IV: Parts VI and VII

Hi Adrian and Gene -

I have now modified the episode titles based on your feedback, see here

If I understand correctly, the remaining issue is that episodes 5-7 need to be removed completely, is that correct?  Or do they need to be merged?

Michelle,

The problem is, as I described above, you can't just rename the parts to the nights. Part III is not Night III. It is part of Night II. So now all the plot outlines and release dates are off, as are the casts (most likely).

The episodes need to be merged and renamed. I've looked at the current episode titles. Here is what needs to me merged.

Night I: Part I is fine.

Night II: Parts II and III and Night III: Parts IV and V should be merged and keep the name "Night II: Parts II and III"

Night IV: Parts VI and VII and Part V should be merged and named "Night III: Parts IV and V"

Part VI and VII should be merged and named "Night IV: Part VI and VII".

Basically, look at the release date and the episodes that were released on the same date need to be merged. Once the merge is complete and settled, I'll go in and make sure the credits are correct.

You're welcome, the episode merges are still processing, I will continue to keep an eye on the series page to make sure the merges get pushed through.

It looks like the episodes have merged. It will probably take another day before I can properly edit them but I'll take a look. The episode numbers are screwy but I'll fix that as well. Thanks Michelle.

Edit: It looks like the edits have already settled and I can edit/verify the cast. I'll do that in a few hours.

Great!  Yep, I just checked the series page and the merges have completed, as the data might still be transitioning waiting a day to update would probably be a good plan.  Thanks again Adrian!

It looks like the merge was quite successful. I have edited the first 3 nights of the series and the only thing that needed changing was the writers and the episode numbers for the later episodes.

I'm watching Night IV currently, so it should be verified in a few hours.
