When IMDb deletes threads....

Here's the thing, yesterday and other days i spent a great deal of time having a conversation/ debate with other users on a particular topic and today suddenly all the threads have disappeared from the message board and my posts with them, whereas i invested sometimes a lot of energy and time to make my point! Let alone all the translations [my mother tongue being french] and "research" i had to devote to achieve my goal, writing edible and easy fathomable texts [which could seem silly, i agree, yet it isn't so easy in another tongue].

Anyway, my question being, is it possible to retrieve those posts from somewhere??
And if not [what i suspect], why in 7 hells do they erase them even from your posting history??! WTH? If you want to erase the threads, fair enough, do as u please, but for pity's sake, don't erase the posts from my history!! Sometimes i take 2-3 hours to give birth to a text trying to answer a philosophical/political/conceptual question asked by a fellow user, therefore i find it highly unacceptable to just erase without warning a thought, a mind construction successfully transformed from idea to ink, from air to stone. And it's just lost forever....
I'm pissed!

The worst is that one wouldn't even realize posts are missing since there's no mark/warning whatsoever in one's board history that tells something has been erased, nothing! That should be the minimum!
So, does anybody know towards whom i gotta turn myself to regarding that matter? Or is it just a lost cause?

Thanx in advance!

You're right. It's a lost cause. You have to stay aware of the purge rates of the boards you are interested in. The biggest problem is that the purge date isn't uniform for all boards and IMDb doesn't advertise it for any board. To get a feel for the rate, look at the oldest post on the board. The older it is the safer you are.

You can also protect old threads by bumping them, but I wouldn't be obvious about doing that. I believe even an edit can delay the deletion of a thread, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

And, if you were cursing in the threads, as you're doing here, you probably caused it to be deleted.

Yeah i hear u DrakeStraw, yet it doesn't explain to me why the posts also disappear from my history u know?

Even if i'm aware that a deleted thread should logically disappear, i think they could still keep a copy of your message [just the message, w/o the rest of the thread] somewhere in order for the poster to retrieve his "creation" if needed be. If it's a matter of space on the servers [what i doubt] or whatnot they could warn us that if not saved, the post or thread will be erased. But just like that without proper notification even when u come back to your account? Doesn't seem fair! At least some phony explanation like "Sorry, due to this or that cause we erased 2,3 or x threads/posts" would be welcome. And even better would be an option, like "if u wanna save your posts in some save-box, click here" or anything! Not just pfffft disappeared and finished; if u are not aware that something's missing? The joke's on you!

So now that means that i can't trust IMDb with my texts anymore and that i have to save manually every thing i write if i intend to keep it over the years, right? Such a pity!

And regarding bluesmanSF, I wouldn't dare come ranting on here that my posts/threads have been deleted if I was merely cursing and trolling on the boards i visit...

Well anyway, i suppose it's really a lost cause then....

Thanx for your time guys!

The explanation is that the posts disappear completely. There is no archive. It's pointless to include a dead link in your history. You're right that there should be a warning. Both of the DVRs I have had mark recordings that are in danger of deletion.

Here's what I suggest. Keep a copy of all your significant postings. When they disappear, update them and post them again if they still apply!

What happens when a member dies? Dead people can't bump or resurrect threads. This thread makes me really sad. I beg the IMDb to make it very clear exactly when threads will be automatically deleted, and to make sure those cases are as rare as possible.

Cutely,

I don't believe the dead really care.  If anyone else does they can keep the thread alive.

All threads on all boards (with one or two exceptions) are eventually removed. The Boards are intended for current discussions, not long-term history. Information important enough to be permanent should be in the database (e.g. Trivia and Reviews).

The more active a board is, the faster the messages expire. If you want a permanent copy of your posts, you need to save a copy yourself. Yes, it is annoying when a thread is removed prematurely, but it would have occurred sooner or later.

Wasn't there an option at one time to have a copy of your post emailed to you?  That would make self-archiving comparatively easy.

I think there was. It would be an easy fix....at least an option and easy path right into email and users can just create an IMDb folder.

If you are researching and writing posts that are rich in detail and something you wish to archive, I suggest you draft them in a document on your computer/IPad, etc. you can draft, save, then copy and paste into the post but always have the original in your computer so that you can refer to it or repost it, if necessary.

If you are keen to keep the other posts,in the thread, you could copy those into a document or take a screenshot. In that manner you keep your own archive because it is important to you and not rely upon IMDb to archive one or two threads out of millions.

Prior to the current design, a user could email to themselves private messages (PM). To my knowledge, IMDb never provided a means to email the content of a post to a message board.

I also recommend drafting posts in MS Word or some other word processing application. The only downside is that MS Words includes special characters (such as smart quotes) that do not render properly in message board messages. The user can usually correct this by previewing the post and/or editing the message after it is posted.

Yes, I'd like to see a return of getting emails of posts.  The boards do need a major overall.  The profile is not even compatible with them and the main profile page is not even compatible with the boards/profile page where it is composed in a barebones editor.  Because of that my profile is only a few lines.  With three different ways the same text can be interpreted, IMDb has a major problem in text rendering that will probably never be fixed without scrapping the current system.
