When will the Help Board be shut down on the IMDb website?

Hi,
Can you provide a date or at least a rough timescale for the closure of the Help Board on IMDb.com?

The announcement of this site came with the news that the Help Board would be shut shortly after Get Satisfaction was set up...but since then there has been no news, either general or specific.

This question has been asked at IMDb.com on the boards and directly to the Help Desk, however since this site is where I "can get answers from customer service" then I should ask it here.

Look forward to knowing the date - the board has a small community and it would be nice for them to at least have some notice and not just log in some day to find it gone.....

Seconded.

I don't mind my posts being deleted because an admin thought they were risque, but I think I may have a problem with them being deleted because the entire board disappears........

@Adam:

Help Board (and almost all other boards) topics expire and get deleted all the time. There is now an announcement at the top of the board directing folks here. So, there should not really be any unresolved issues over there and no reason not to remove it when this board becomes the sole place for posting "Questions for other users about how to use/locate features to the site," which is what Help was for. You shouldn't really be posting new topics there at this point.

Do you have such an unresolved issue?

There really is no reason to, as you suggest, keep Help Board posts forever, especially since no other message board posts are permanent. I am not sure why it would become a problem for you. If you have a post there now, you could certainly just post it here.

The Help Board is not going to disappear, at least not for the foreseeable future.

The plan is for the board to be switched to an 'archive' mode where existing threads remain but users will not be able to post new ones. Normal expiration rates will still apply, but the 'Help' board already has a very generous expiration time so threads will probably continue to be there for quite a while.

I am not sure when this is going to happen, unfortunately -- the best estimate I can give is 'really soon' because the work has already been scheduled, but the exact date of the switch depends on a number of other factors and technical work that needs to happen ahead of the change.

Giancarlo,
Thank you for the reply. Do you know how much notice will be given before the Help Board becomes read only?

What is the reason for keeping the board as "read only"? It won't be searchable and if the last threads were pointless "complain about trolls" threads or really really specific questions then these will stand for ages without offering value.....if you want a "previously asked/answered questions list then I'm sure the users on the board would be happy to contribute to it - and this would be more use than a froze, unusable board....

On the "read only" thing - do you mean that the remain threads will still be active for posts - just that new threads cannot be started?

Just a quick update: the change has been made today, so no new threads can be posted in the Help board (the announcement/header of the board is being updated accordingly and should change soon).

To avoid truncating existing conversations, old threads will still remain active (i.e. you can post a response/new comment in an existing threads). at least for the time being.

Giancarlo,
Over a week ago I asked this question so that myself and others could make use of the forum before it was shut down......you provide an answer after the fact - thus making the answer useless.

Different site - same IMDb admin approach - you should thank your stars that users like Emperor and Blues have decided to continue being helpful to other users here......they will cover the many failings of the IMDb staff.

You're a silly goose sir.

Silly goose? Steady on! Wars have been started over less ;)

It is a pity that the announcement was after the fact, as we could have used the time productively, perhaps starting threads on what are commonly problems that crop up here, but then that would be an ongoing problem.

Perhaps this thread offers a solution: As in my post below, would it be possible to ask staff to start a new thread about widespread problems, even if only to add a link in pointing to the relevant threads here, as well as offer a venue for people to get help who don't want to sign up here. Obvious current candidates include: "Reference view problems (blank pages, no Facebook likes, etc.)" and "Problems authenticating accounts" (which is clearly a problem that GetSatisfaction was almost designed to help people with, as without it they can't post on the forums), etc. It'd only need a few threads a month but could help point people with problems in the direction of a thread dealing with this.

Nice....but I can't tag that as good solution in reply...becoming a pet peeve of mine! So I just hope your post gets seen!

I can always repost it below but being in these comment boxes still gets flagged up, so they will see it. Whether they'll reply is another thing.

Thanks for the update. Would it be possible to post a thread in that forum that announces it is closed?

Experience shows that people don't read the messages at the top of the forum (unless you were to do it in red, and possibly made it flash ;) ), so I can guarantee there will be considerable confusion that will spill over into other forums.

I frequently wondered if anyone ever read the description at all. Until today, people were still posting there to contact staff (and it used to be described as the place to "ask users"...not to mention the update that said staff don't monitor it!). Great idea, Emperor!

No worries, it was those kinds of posts that convinced me we'd need something more.

And for future reference this is the link:

The I Need To Know message board still offers a link to the closed Help Board, for those with questions about the site/boards, and it should be linked here. Until it's fixed, as they can't post on Help, they'll probably start posting Help topics on the film trivia board.

The message was changed there, but now says "If you have questions about how to use IMDb please our Support Community instead."

Missing the word "visit" perhaps?

Would it be possible for the staff to add the occasional thread to the Help forum for common problems that emerge on here, if only to drop a link in pointing people directly to the relevant thread here. Current hot topics:

* Reference view problems (blank pages, no Facebook likes, etc.)

* User authentication problems

It'd help drive people to the right thread here where they can get the help they need and help reduce confusion from users, as you can bet your ass some people are missing all the messages about coming to GS. It'd only need a thread or so a month but could really help everything joined up.
