Where do story consultants belong?

The writers guide says that "script consultants" should be listed in the "other crew" section. However, it does not mention "story consultant" and I'm not sure if they are similar job titles. I've seen it handled differently based on the show and, probably, whoever entered the credits.

The one show that I watch that lists "story consultants" seems like these should be writers credits as the "story consultants" are frequently credited with writing the show as well.

I agree with you, they should both belong to the writing credits.

Hi Adrian -

"Story Consultant" credits should currently be listed under the Writer section.  Cheers!

Maybe along with the "script consultants", for the sake of consistency?

Script consultants is specifically listed in the writer's guide as a position not to include. I have no idea what the difference between the two titles are.

There are currently 14,565 story consultants listed on the Other Crew section.  Of course, there are also 107,764 story editors under the Other Crew section as well despite being listed in the writer's guide. Is there any plans to clean that up? I move them when I see them in stuff but that is just ad hoc changes.

Vincent Fournols, a script consultant might be in a similar boat as a script supervisor, thus not having anything to do with the actual story creation process, not even story modification; and if I understand correctly, script supervision involves making sure that continuity is maintained across different shots as according to a kind of "script" that extends far beyond dialog, like more of an entire prompt book (complete with storyboards) than a basic script. If I had to guess, I would say that a script consultant serves to explain to producers, directors and editors how to put a script and storyboards into proper or effective execution.

Hi Adrian -

I have reached out to our editors for further discussion regarding our documentation and policy surrounding Writer credits and what is acceptable to be listed under this section (such as the possible inclusion of "Script Consultant, etc.), they will review our docs and policies to ensure that we are up-to-date for these credit placements and that any changes should be documented on our guides.  As soon as I have an update I will let you know here.  Cheers!

Hi all,

We've updated the writers submission guide now. In short, story coordinators/supervisors should be considered as writers, however script consultants should be submitted to the miscellaneous crew section.
  • Staff writers, story editors, story coordinators, story supervisors and story consultants also belong in the writers section.
  • Script doctors and script consultants belong in the miscellaneous crew section.
Regards,
Will

Will you move these to the writer section?
It would make the misc. crew a bit less unwieldy. It would also do justice to the people who did these jobs. And it would lead to a bit less confusion among contributors when adding credits for these people.

Hi Marco -
I'm not certain if there is a plan to move the existing credits vs just accepting corrections as they are submitted to us.  I will reach out to the applicable editors and clarify, once I hear back I will let you know here.
