Where do we put credit for director of the movies, footage from which was used?

Sometimes credited instances like that go to Assistant Director/Second Unit Director, but at times formulation puzzles me.

A recent (in terms of me adding the title) example I'm trying to make sense of is how Alfred Hitchcock is credited in Ukrainian series "Blyustiteli poroka" which is dedicated to 100 years of his. Credit in the first two episodes for example (apart from a separate dedication which goes to "Special Thanks") looks like that (sorry for quality, apart from very irregular and scarce reruns and a VHS release so rare it's nearly impossible to track the tapes in the wild series had never seen a proper release, so I keep recordings for research purposes):

Credit translated from Russian as "Motion picture uses excerpts from the movies of Alfred Hitchcock". I was puzzled where I should put that and tried to adapt it in IMDb listings as "uses footage from the movies by" (another way to translate it, a bit simpler and better-looking for IMDb listings), but so far it was not approved so I'm not sure that it is a right decision.

Other option I can think of is "director: excerpts" in either "Assistant/2nd Unit Director" or "Miscellaneous Crew" section, but I would love to know what IMDb staff thinks about that.

I would think these wouldn't get a credit for Hitchcock and that it only belongs in the movie connections in the edited from (or whatever that category is) which you can then click on to see the full credits for that connection. This would be in keeping with the idea that "archive footage" for actors don't include movies shown within other movies.

I put those in "features" rather then "edited from" although it is a borderline case: excerpts are shown in the epigraph and prologue sections and are sometimes discussed by Hitchcock in the host segments. Usually archive footage credits are not eligible, unless credited (there are also borderline cases like footage licensing and soundtracks), which is the case here.

Soviet and Post-Soviet credits are all over the place in that matter: until mid-2000's concepts of copyright were only gasped partially. In this case episodes list Hitchcock in the credits for direction of the movies, but not studios or distributors; some soundtracks are credited, while some are not...

Hi Nikolay -

This dedication should be listed in the  "Thanks" section, so as you mentioned there are separate dedications to Alfred Hitchcock, in this instance there should be one "Thanks" credit listed with the dedications separated by a "/".  Cheers!

Update: so now "uses footage from the movies by" came through as miscellaneous crew on one episode accidentally and as special thanks on another. Should I move it all to special thanks?

Hi Nikolay,

Yes that seems like a sensible solution and is at least consistent across the series listing.

Regards,
Will
