If someone is credited as an "assistant editor", where should that fall in the credits of the film and which department does it belong to? Editorial or other crew or some place else? Also, what would be the description of their job? Also, are they different from Edit Assistants?

Kyle: For IMDb purposes, assistant editor credits should be listed under the Editorial Department (not Editors; only the main editor of a title should be listed under Editors).

I found a contract of the Motion Picture Editors Guild (at https://www.editorsguild.com/Wages-and-Contracts) which defines the jobs of the Motion Picture Editor and the Assistant Editor as follows:
... "Motion Picture Editor” shall be deemed to mean a person actually engaged in the editing of motion pictures into proper sequence and story form. Editors shall, whenever requested by the Producer, advise the Producer in a creative and technical capacity with reference to any optical effects, special visual effects, stock footage, re-shoots and insert materials. Additionally, upon request by the Producer, the Editor shall advise the Producer with respect to schedules and staffing in the interest of efficiency, effectiveness and economy in the post-production of the motion picture to which they are assigned. In order to perform satisfactorily the above job functions, it is recognized that Editors should be given every opportunity to view dailies and attend dubbing sessions, and at the request of the Producer, attend preview screenings and facilitate delivery of the final answer print. As to the Editorial staff, Editors may recommend to management the Assistant Editor(s) who is (are) to work with them on the assignment. ...

... "Assistant Editor" shall be deemed to mean a person who is assigned to assist any of the Editors defined above .... His duties shall be such as are assigned to him and performed under the immediate direction, supervision and responsibility of the Editor whom he has been assigned to assist, such as preparation of dailies for editing; organizing the editing room; serving as liaison between the editing room and all other departments and vendors; organizing and cataloging all elements of edited picture and sound; logging, preparing and managing each successive version of the show; ordering and editing in visual effects and titles; preparing, coordination and managing the final edited version and all related elements. He may assist the Editor in the synchronizing of sound, sound effects or temporary music tracks for the purpose of editorial screening. ...
The contract I saw didn't use the term "edit assistant".
