Some of the "best" actors can't act as they have gone by off their looks/body and therefore work dries up as they lose that appeal, or maybe they are just a horrendous actor but we just love them because of it. Then you get the breed of actor that simply can not act, they break into a persona they portray on screen, but ask them to act a different role, they simply can not do it. So who would you rate as the most overrated actor?

For me it has to probably be Arnie. He is an absolutely terrible actor. His early films he was so 1 dimensional that he got parts because of his body and that was his star attraction. In the 80s he was basically a lump of muscle with a funny accent. But yet, I love the guy, I love his films. I don't watch Arnie because of his talent, I watch him for the lack of it, his 1 liners, some are horrendous, a bit like the Tommy Cooper of Hollywood, but because it's Arnie, his poor jokes just make you love the guy. Not a single person can say they've sat down and watched an Arnie film purely because they want to see acting at it's finest.
A close 2nd I would say is Al Pacino, 1 of my fave films is Carlito's Way, he plays the gangster role well, but look at his best roles, they are basically the same character. He can't do comedy, and he isn't the draw he used to be at the box office, unlike Robert de Niro who has evolved.
Similar with Samuel L Jackson, he just shouts and swears in practically 99% of the parts he plays. Steven Seagal has a larger variety of jackets than Jackson can play different roles. Just pick a couple of random roles, you could swap the characters around and no one would notice.

Good spot. I'll change now and replace 1 of her. I don't dislike her, but to say how big she is, I really struggle to remember her films. For me her most memorable is in Total Recall. I really can't remember the last film of her's I've watched.

Keanu Reeves, actually that is a good call. He is like a cardboard cut out in 99% of his films. Some of his films are stellar, but his acting sure isn't. I have read a little bit about Reeves and as someone who has been diagnosed with Aspergers, I discovered it is suspected Keanu may be on the spectrum too, which would explain his acting. Read a few things about him as a person, he respects women, never touches anyone, he respects people like the time he stood up for someone on the train. i admire him as a person, but your suggestion is definitely going on the list.

I hate to admit it, but Keanu has like 3 facial expressions.
He is by all accounts a very, very nice person (rare, and even rarer in Hollywood) and has lucked out by being cast in many titles with very good storylines, but his acting ability is actually rather weak.
I agree that Diesel and Johnson also suck. They are there for their muscles.
I think the others are competent (apart from James and Hill whose names I can't place right now.)

Re: Adam Sandler
I watched Netflix's "Murder Mystery" a few months ago.
Many criticised the film; one criticism said something like "it has Adam Sandler as Adam Sandler, and Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green [Aniston's character in Friends]."
My response would be, it's worked for them for ~30 years, why stop now. They both continue to be amusing in their stereotypical roles. Hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Whoa!! That's pretty racist right there! He has Asian eyes, he's not gonna be animated like a non-Asian! And some of us have only "3 facial expressions" iRL. You want to talk about that, then pick on Melissa Joan Hart (she can't act, she can't emote, only 1 expression, pretty much, I don't get the appeal)
Keanu is a fine actor. I bet you like Meryl Streep!
You people are just rehashing nonsense that the gullible masses dish out, thoughtlessly and without backing up their claims. And Talia's racism was uncalled for!

There are three problem Get Satisfaction users that IMDb has allowed to remain for months. They will use language like that all the time. Appraiser 1, Meka and Good Fix Gary. I have tried to report them directly to IMDb staff. But all they do is remove the abusive language. They will not suspend them. If I did what they do, I would be gone in a matter of hours. And I never spoke as they do in the past. I was far more civil than they were.
And Talia. Funny that Appraiser1 is female and your male!
LMAO when I read her reply to you............

You are a liar, stop using my name with your lies in irrelevant topics.
IMDB staff: Why are you allowing this troll do whatever he wants here?
This is the second time he accused me using swears in an irrelevant topic which is not true.
Why are you allowing him to disturb people?
He's lying all the time. He thinks when he repeats a lie enough time it will become true or people will just fall for his lies.
Stop, go away.

Adjusted reply to Appraiser1 who accused me of racism:
Dear Appraiser1,
I also think Henry Cavill has 3 facial expressions.
I also think Bollywood actor John Abrahams has 3 facial expressions (I mention him because I'm of Indian descent.)
It has nothing to to with racism.
Yours sincerely,
Talia.

Agreed Meka: this is such a hilarious case of Ed Jones projecting, He is the troll! Keep reporting, little insignificant troll who finds meaning in your life by attacking people on here, then playing the pot calling the kettle black!
Dear Talia,
I apologize for my wording. I am however fed up with people picking on Keanu Reeves for what he cannot control.
Many of us do not emote in real life, be it for our eye shape or due to psychological reasons, be it because we have trained to remain stoic or we have emotional reasons for not registering emotion, some of us, regardless of any race, simply do not react externally.
Some of us have one permanent facial expression, sometimes 2. We are part of planet Earth and we need representing in movies, too. Are we then "wooden" too? If we are, then Keanu represents the part of the population we belong to, thus he is acting correctly.
As for me, people simply cannot read me. I can be extremely happy and people ask me what I'm afraid of. I can be scared and people will ask me why am I so confident. Etc... People misread me all the time.
An actor capability or skill does not depend on him or her making crazy facial expressions nonstop like Madonna or talking in affected speech, like Meryl Streep.
I just wish people would stop picking on Keanu, again, for what he cannot control: his facial expressions, if his character is not written to be going "Whoa!" or overly effusive.
To me, it's a bit like asking a blind person to see, or a natural redhead to tan.
So again, sorry for my wording. Thanks for your new note. All good.
Sincerely,
Appraiser 1
PS: Ed Jones can eat a dead donkey phallus!

When I see a bit of banter, I try not to read it all, but I am definitely one against racism, my ex fiance's family is from the Caribbean, but I don't like any type of "ism" being used as a weapon to silence others either. I know at times I can be a bit sensitive as my views have totally changed past several years to other groups of people I'm not part of and not everyone has a voice. I can't see any comments that I would consider worthy of reporting or hurtful to anyone. I know with my autism, I sometimes say things very close to the bone and never mean to upset anyone, but sometimes I can say something upsetting unintentionally (I apologise to anyone in advance). I'm still getting used to everyone on here, and seen much far worse banter on other blogs than what I see on here. So far I get on with both of you and would like to continue to do so, don't want it to get to a stage I have to pick sides with people on here, life's too short for that, maybe it's my naivety, these blogs are a bit of fun and let's all get on. I want to hear what you both have to say on different topics on here and I'm sure there are others on here that feel the same as me.

If I'm honest, I don't know who she is. Just looking at her profile, I've seen some of her films but really can't remember her.

Well, while you may not know her, many do. She is in IMDbs Top 500 at #218.
So she warrants inclusion. Unless you say no. My biggest issue with her is her voice. It's just like Reeves. Almost monotone.

And she's added. It may sound sexist, but I struggle to remember a lot of well known actresses, part of it is purely down to the type of films I watch, it's rare a watch a chick flick and when I do it's even rarer I relate to a female character. (even in the films I enjoy) But part of it is down to looks. Actors look distinctive, you have De Niro with his squint, Vin Diesel with his bald head and miniscule baby chin, even The Rock with his mannerism the way he stands hands on hips, shoulders forward, head even more forward and that thing he does with his brow when he look at you. I wouldn't describe Arnie as good looking, but again, he looks unique, and Stallone well, Frankenstein in a woman's wig was the best way to describe him. Then you look at actresses. Most look alike with all their make up, same hair dos, no distinctive features making them look unique. But go back a few decades, Anne Ramsey I loved as an actress and if I saw her in a film, I tend to remember her and her roles. Sigourney Weaver, not many actresses looked like her, she pulled off the look of Ripley so well that I struggled to accept her in a normal female role because all I saw was this hard as nails marine type person. She was unique in her looks, thankfully she wasn't type casted and made some cracking films. Diane Wiest easily recognisable with her tom boy short hair. Lookat Phoebe Cates, at the time I recognised her, but because there were so few films I saw her in, never remembered her name, but the same could be said for 90% of the cast of Gremlins, Zach Galligan had a bit of a universal look so mixed him up with other actors, then you have Corey Feldman, not exactly what you class as handsome, but even now his distinctive looks make him very easily recognisable. Maybe it is the uniqueness why some actors/actresses are more of a success than others so they stand out from the crown and memorable to attract more viewers.
Maybe part of it is due to my autism and I struggle to differentiate similar faces especially of people I rarely see. Younger actors I'm starting to struggle with now as most seem to be turning into clones and ignoring individuality. My autism or not, there are not that many actresses (modern) that I recognise now even though I do watch quite a few films. Which is why many a time I'm googling someone during or after a film trying to put a name to a face and past roles.

Meant to say about Phoebe Cates, if she was around now at that age, I bet it wouldn't be too difficult to find a dozen actresses that looked like her in a matter of minutes and I think she would have just blended into obscurity. It isn't an attack on her as I did love her in Gremlins.

Cage was good in Con Air, but the biggest question in the universe is. "Where are Nicholas Cage's side burns?". It may sound daft, but most of his films I ended up watching his hair and just shaking my head than watching the films themselves.
Meryl Streep, I have to admit, I do like her, but could I name many of her films, or remember many of her roles? I liked her in The Post alongside Tom Hanks, she played a very good part, can't remember her in Suffragette but I do remember I enjoyed that film at the time and the 1 role I can't forget her in is Death Becomes Her. I do rate her as an actress, but do I rate her films?

I'm kinda with you on that. War of the Worlds for me massively highlighted what a terrible "actor" he is. But there are a few films I really enjoyed with him in. The Last Samurai, I don't know anyone else that likes that movie, everyone I know that's seen it hates it, but I really enjoyed it. Action films are not really films to display acting ability, but he's had a few very good roles such as in A Few Good Men and Born on the 4th of July. I thought it would have been too cliche to add him on this list but I think he deserves a place. I didn't want to create a list of bad actors/actresses, but a list of good ones that simply can't act. On the list he goes just for you Rocky-O

Breumaster, your comment irritates me immensely. :)
I love Atkinson's acting and I consider it rather sad that his comedic acting (while great) overshadowed his dramatic talent. He could've been great Doctor Who, but he was snabbed of that role quite a few times. :(

I agree. He has shown a lot in characters like Mr Bean and in particular Edmund Blackadder. I can't stand Johnny English, just felt like it was about 15 years too late or just for a younger audience. But over the years, I've got to admire his talent.

Atkinson does his own characters, ok, but what about portraying a character he didn't invent? Was there any role he didn't invent and he did perfect? Despite his fabolous performances in comedy - did he ever portray someone perfectly or did a character which felt real. When you look at Meryl Streep - She perfectly captures the little characteristics of the people she portrayes. Like all the little tics she copied when she played the iron lady. For my understanding it's way more work to portray a character that lived and keep the behavior most equal to the character, than playing a character self invented.

I hear you Breumaster, but do the majority see Rowan Atkinson as a great actor, or do they see him as a character actor or a comedian? I love Atkinson, I've grown up watching his work since the 80s, but I wouldn't put him in the same category as Tom Hanks or Julianne Moore, I wouldn't put him in the top 50.
I watch Mr Bean, I don't think, wow what a great actor, I'm gripped.I just think he's a very funny clever guy, the same can be said about a lot of his work. Looking at his TV and films, none would be included in any top 100 lists in where he has the main part. But to say he is overrated, I can't say he is because noone really classes him as a great actor and I'm saying that as a big fan of his work (not Johnny English) and he's not a big office draw, he never has been.

Hands down MERYL STREEP!!! SHE CAN'T ACT!!! All she does is play it to the gallery. Her acting is so phony and bad, she should have never left acting 101. It makes you wonder who would Harvey Weinstein her with that face. I just don't get it.
She's even worse than Madonna in League of their Own or Cast Away, 90% of the time.
Who's with me here? Come on! Who does she (buy??) to get all those ridiculous Oscar noms??

Must be on my own here liking Streep :( I might need to watch some of her films, I've only watched The Post in the past few years, Suffragette about 5 years ago and that's probably it in the past half decade. Maybe I need a refresh of her films.

In 'The Iron Lady' she perfectly copied all the tics Maggie Thatcher had. I searched through archive material. and can say - she really behaves like Thatcher in the movie. She formerly did in the movie about the real tv-show cook Julia Child (UK). I did some research about the tv-cook Julia Child. Again Meryl Streep perfectly copied Julia Child. These are characters that lived in real. Looks like Streep studied how they behave and copied them perfectly. I don't know why she should be overrated, except seeing the many people that crawl around her at galas, indulging her as a godess.

Thank you, Meka.
Boz: you're not alone. The entire planet throws Oscars at her. I wish one would hit her smack in the head and she would either never act again, or get that loose rivet screwed on right so she would actually ACT and quit the clowning around. "No Acting Please!", she needs to read it along with going back to Acting 101.
Breu: copying is not acting. Meryl cannot act. She OVERacts all the time. That's why she's overrated. If she had been in my Acting 101 class, she would have been laughed right out of the studio and shown the door by coach and students alike.
I think it was Katharine Hepburn (she couldn't stand Streep) who used to say she's all about the technique and that's all we see: her wheels turning. All I see is the same grandiose character again & again. When I watch Tom Cruise, at least, I'm watching a character. IE: he was great in a film I can't stand, Eyes Wide Shut. (I also don't understand why people say he can't act, other than this became night & day reversal after his couch jumping.) *shrugs*
Back to Streep: she canNOT be subtle. I'm sorry but I'd rather watch low-key Keanu than "play it to the gallery" Streep. Streep does not act. She chews the scenery... and VERY badly at that.
I've seen her Julia Child trailer: she adds nonsense to the part. Maybe she did sound like her (and she is GREAT with accents!) but she added affectations that Julia did not have, inflections, phony-baloney tones to her acting. I did see the Thatcher trailer but don't remember it. When I see her, I change the channel.
For the life of me, I don't understand why anyone would like her. I would love for you to explain to me how you can not see what I'm talking about, and why you like her other than being a "good imitator".
I don't mean sarcastically: I am truly curious here.

You do put a very good case forward and as the list is about so called good actors/actresses that are seen as some of the best around, I feel it fitting. We all have our favourites and dislikes, and you have come across respectful about my opinion of her. So on the list she goes. As for liking her, I think part of it is, is that I've enjoyed some of the films where she has had a leading role.
Just to ask, not argue or say you're wrong or anything. Imitating, isn't acting? Surely, acting can be categorising as lieing, imitating, deceiving and portraying. If I'm sad and I force a smile, to an extent, am I not acting. I'm imitating an emotion to deceive. I think a better example, Robert De Niro. I can't remember which film it was, you might be able to help me here, he played a gangster, the film is on the tip of my tongue, and what De Niro did to get into the part of the film was spend time with a convicted gangster. He copied his movements, every little detail the way he conducted himself, spoke, reacted and De Niro used this for his character. So did De Niro act or imitate? Actually I think it was for Goodfellas, I may be wrong.
I can see your point though, imitating, is purely copying, there is not creation as an artist, you can't "act" the part but relay it. I'm no expert, but my ex ran a local community theatre and I thought I'd give it a go being on stage. Was fun, I played the first act as a zombie and the 2nd act as an Egyptian mummy, there was script I had to follow, I didn't read the book the play was based on, but I made the character my own, added a couple of things in myself, my own mannerisms, a couple of visual jokes (it was a comedy horror), and put a little bit of myself into the characters. So I'm kinda understanding where you are coming from regards the roles of real people. But surely she must get some credit for playing those parts well.

Thank you, Boz, for your kind reply, and your understanding.
To further clarify, yes, acting is lying, and copying and an art. That is not the problem I have with Meryl. Again, she's wonderful with accents, you say she's a great mimicker, which is helpful to play another celebrity.
The way she talks, to me, sounds phony, and takes me out of movie magic. Ex: If she has to say "Oh, and who have we here?" she says "OOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWOoooooooo! and whooo do we have HEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRe?" She does too much. She is what my first acting coach used to call "too big".
When she does that, I am instantly yanked out of the movie enjoyment and realize "Aw! There's Merryl doing her thing!"
Maybe she needs to be 50% Keanu for me to accept her as an actress, probably the way Keanu would have to be 50% "Meryl" to be acceptable to those who say he's a bad actor.
(I am sorry I am not familiar with DeNiros's work at all.) I think Meryl Streep has a need to dominate every scene. IMHO, she needs to tone it down a few notches (and a few more) and bring her acting to realism.
It's almost like Meryl does with her voice what some silent actors did with their eyes, to make sure to be understood, she makes sure she's heard. And boy do we ever! (I kind of feel bad now cos you like her; this has bothered me for a long time about her and Oscars).
Sounds like you did a great job in your play! :)

Hey, don't feel bad because I like her, we all have our own opinions and there are many celebrities out there that have their own little nuances that drive some people to insanity but others love them for it. I'm not mad or annoyed that your opinion is a total contrast to mine, but what I will do is the next time I watch 1 of her films, I'll look out for it and try and see your point of view rather than ignore it. I know there are bad films and actors that for some unexplained reason I do like, and there are some good things that I really can't stand, but because I like something or dislike it doesn't make it universally so. This is the reason I've created this list. Didn't expect to put someone on that I thought was a good actress lol. But because I like her doesn't mean that the everyone does and it definitely doesn't mean everyone has to like her because I do. So don't worry if you see some of my posts in the future you don't agree with and you want to give your opinion, it's always good to hear someone else's point of view.

Oh sorry, regards the play, yes it was fun. I had no training and not been on a stage since I was at school, My ex ran the theatre, I usually helped her out by volunteering my services helping behind stage and in the bar, wherever I was need, but regards acting on stage, I was nervous as hell, but really wanted to do it. It was in front of only about 180 people if memory serves me right and over a few nights, can't remember if it was 3 or 4 nights, so I chose a part that didn't have too many lines. But under the stage lights, as daft as it sounds, standing still for periods was more difficult than the acting itself. especially wearing full face make up as the zombie butler, the mummy was a bit more active later on in the play as it was definitely one of the most integral character in act 2. Really glad I did it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Zombie butler sounds like a hoot! I would have loved to watch THAT! :-D
Thank you for your kind words. The next time I see some film with good ole Merryl, I will try to give it a go. Yes, it's true when having someone else's POV, you can see things you couldn't before, and why I asked what you saw in her.
Reminds me now: I was able to enjoy Devil Wears Prada, even though I also can't stand Anne Hathaway, cos of clothes and Paris! (And doesn't she belong in this list? LOL!) ;-)
What else I saw her in, the Roseanne movie (she's a romance novel writer) and I found her to prevent me from getting into the film because of her mannerisms. That must have been the first I saw her in and I thought I was being pranked: I expected the "Sophie's Choice" actress I had heard so much about to knock my socks all the way down. (Or is that off?) Instead, they ended up all the way up my chin.
Wasn't she and her twisted neck also with hole-in-the-gut (not an insult: it's in the movie!) Goldie Hawn in that witches' movie with Casablanca's daughter in the swimming pool? If she was, I also found her cringeworthy in it, and those 2 films way back when (I'm old!) ended my "I totally need to see films with the Goddess of Acting" era.
I've avoided her ever since.

Last year I watched The Post where she stars alongside Tom Hanks, another based on a true story film, I did enjoy that. Suffragette, if honest, I can't remember much of the film, but I do remember I enjoyed it at the time. I wasn't keen on Devil Wears Prada, not my type of film, but I can see how a lot of people highly rate it.
In her early career she starred in some decent films like Kramer versus Kramer, Out of Africa, Sophies Choice but it's been a lot of years since I watched any of those and I appreciate that even some of the best films from a few decades ago, the acting just seems to lose it's appeal. The vast majority of Streep films I've not seen, but maybe it was her earlier roles that won me over and watched her on the back of her name.
The play I performed in was The House of Dracula, if I remember right the characters were Groat and Kal-Seet, it was over 10 years ago. If honest, I didn't care how people rated me as I had never acted before, it was an amateur group anyway, I just wanted to have some fun and to give a few laughs for everyone. It would have bombed on TV, but people still paid to watch with the money going straight back into running the theatre. Looking back, it was hard work as I work full time, but it was a great hobby/interest at the time.

to go with an actor that lots of people like and respect as an actor, I'd say
Leonardo Dicaprio. I can tell he's acting. I don't see his character, I see him.

I know what you mean, I feel like that about a lot of actors/actresses and the illusion doesn't quite work. There are a couple of Dicaprio films I've really enjoyed, some I feel were massively overrated which I found boring. I was always a detractor from "Dicrapio" how I used to call him until my ex recommended I watched the Beach. That single film made me like him and I started to watch his films in a different light.

In my opinion, he was quite riveting to watch in Django Unchained (2012) and The Revenant (2015).

Yup, yup, yup, yup and yup. But didn't Connery playing a Russian submarine Captain in his Scottish accent win you over?

And his academy award for supporting actor in The Untouchables was undeserved?

I can't remember, was his character supposed to be Irish in that film? Or was he of Irish/Scottish descent?

Oh yes, can't argue with a lot of that. Clooney I've never really been a big fan of, Aniston, personally just not my type of actress, she is someone else that relies on her looks, she'll struggle when they go and she'll complain that Hollywood is ageist against women although other aging actresses that rely on talent will still get the roles. Pitt I've liked him in a few films, and Depp, I really love his portrayal of Jack Sparrow. I know Depp is a marmite type of actor, you love him or hate him. I liked him in The Professor, Public Enemies and a few other of his films. I have to admit, I'm on the side of the fence I like him, but appreciate that many don't. Some of his characters split opinion too, I didn't like Edward Scissorhands and preferred Gene Wilder playing Willy Wonka.
