To whom it may concern,

Today I got a message saying that I was unable to add anymore data to imdb, and it says that I  deliberately tried to violated your User Conduct Agreement? I don't understand what I did wrong? Ive been on here for 6 years and am a Top Contributor for 6 years and try hard to add correct info I would NEVER try to deliberately hurt Imdb ever, so I don't understand what I did that made me violate your rules? And If I did violate them it was by mistake and I didn't realize it. So I apologize to whatever I did? How can I get my privileges back?  May I ask has this ever happened to any other users and how did they fix it? Also you can message me if you want to make it more private if you wish, i don't mind. Thank you.

Hi, unknown1000. You might have been banned for making a difficult-to-revert mess and continuing to render similar errors are others titles. The ban is probably a way put you on pause, so that IMDb site authorities can have chance to inform you of the problems with your submissions, perhaps also to persuade you to contribute to the correction process, granted you've not violated their trust too much. If there is a misunderstanding, there is a strong chance that you're the one with the lack of understanding, as revealed in the GS topic found at the aforementioned "mess" hyperlink.

Hi all,

Please know that this isn't a decision that we have taken lightly. This is the latest in a long series of errors over the years that has caused significant clean-ups from both staff and other contributors, not all of which have been reported publicly. After repeated coaching from staff the users' accuracy level and understanding of policies are still below acceptable levels. Please see the Contributors' Charter.

Please let me stress that is an extreme and rare situation and isn't just linked to this one-off mistake.

Regards,
Will

I take Imdb very seriously and try very very hard to make it as correct as possible to the best of my knowledge.

Maybe as a suggestion, imdb should have a required source link for ALL updates for everybody that you MUST add a source for each update, would that help? cause i wouldn't mind that and if something is incorrect, I try to fix it.

Also  since imdb removed the Misc. Comment, that will make it even harder for imdb users to show proof that their update is correct...

Citing sources is one thing, but sometimes it is also important to justify a "correction" by referencing the guidelines found in the IMDb Help articles.

Thank for this response Will. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only contributor who was wondering about this particular situation.

RE: the Tom and Jerry shorts, I was trying to HELP make it easier for imdb users to find it, I would NEVER deliberately try to destroy imdb ever, that's why it says im a top contributor for 6 years cause im trying to help fix incorrect info and make it better, I am sorry about the T&J entry and I don't think I deserve to be banned for that. :(

also as the bottom of every submission page it says something about adding this data is to the best of your knowledge or something, and i thought all my corrections were to the best of my knowledge...

Well, unknown1000, whichever IMDb employee told you, "Our customer service department will not be able to offer any additional insight or action on these matters", whether or not he/she had the authority to do so, is not interested in helping. But are you certain that the message pertained to nothing other than the ban?

You don't want to get too involved or wound up over this. It's really great to help update a database, but in all reality all you are doing is help a very large rich corporation make even more money and not get paid for it.
Take a break and have a rest from it for a while, it's not the end of the world.

While you may have earned Badges, your accumulation of them according to what Will said was based on the majority of your work being incorrect based on your idea of what is right. You would have been better served "Asking" what IS "Right" back in the old message board days prior to your sojourn into "Correcting" and organizing data based on your "Opinion" of what is right. If I want to find an old stand alone cartoon that was shown during an intermission, I would not expect to find it in with the later TV Serial of the same name. This sounds like what you were doing. It makes it "Harder" to find what you're looking for. You cannot just create "Categories" on your own, no matter how good the idea is, without asking first. This database is "Ours" too. For you to make assumptions on what you think "We" will like is presumptuous at best. Close to arrogance. This is not a personal attack at all. Just an observation. I have been following this thread since you first posted it. From what I have extrapolated from your comments, I has finally lead me to side with IMDb on this. You did not make "One" Mistake. You made hundreds. You seem a very nice person with good intentions. The old saying "Look before you leap" comes to mind here. Pete Rose had a similar problem making an assumption when betting. He did not ask for permission first if it was OK to play in someone else's  sandbox in his perceived fashion of what was "OK". His assumption got him banned for life. Yes, you can argue "They should've had better guidelines, etc, etc. When operating in "Grey areas" it's always best to run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes! Take your ban and live with it. It would have been nicer if the ones that approved your work had caught it earlier. Your early data acceptance rate made you a trusted contributor.  When you expanded your work they stopped fact checking your contributions. Some blame might go to IMDb but the majority rests on your shoulders. I'm just pointing out the obvious. These are not my "Opinions" just conclusions based on all the back and forth between you and IMDb. Sorry for your loss of privileges. But what you did, does not help in data searching. You have a good day if that's possible. Cheer up. This is not the end of the world. You can still work out in this "Gym" right here. You can give others good advice from this learned experience.
