Why are you letting TROLLS control the IMDB boards?

It seems to me as I read the problems and complaints both here and in numerous threads that the TROLLS have figured out yet another way to disrupt and destroy those of us who truly want to be a contributing partner in the success of the IMDB.com site.

I have read over and over comments from long time and respected users that the boards really don't mean much to IMDB.com. If that is so, then that is truly a shame and you will eventually face a downfall just as Myspace has and Facebook seems to be headed.  Contributors make this site. If you cannot protect us from the TROLLS then what is the point? What is your mission statement?

To be plain: Trolls input incorrect data. They harass and disrupt the boards. And now they have a new way to cause trouble because they know IMDB.com will do nothing to prevent them. That is they will report without cause users in good standing and IMDB.com will delete not just the thread but decimate the entire posting history of long time accounts such as mine.  How is this good will or good service? This happened to me and I've been attempting to find the appropriate person to redress my very valid insult by this website.  I have NEVER violated any of the rules of IMDB and yet I was arbitrarily and capriciously destroyed by TROLLS unknown to me. I wasn't even involved in a flame war with whomever did this to me. I believe you still have my data and I am requested reinstatement of my history to my account ToniHunterOne.

At least review my account. It just galls me that IMDB.com moderators and staffers can allow themselves to be manipulated by TROLLS.   I will be eagerly awaiting a response by an actual employee.

Hi MollyBlue,

I am also addressing your other thread in this post:
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/unfair_punitive_reaction_by_deleting_my_entire_posting_histo...

Trolls and spammers have been a continuing problem on the IMDb message boards. As a Champion, I am another user not a staff member and share your concern. I am an active contributor to the IMDb message boards and would also be extremely upset if my posting history were to be deleted.

The message boards are not as central to IMDb as the IMDb database for films and people. IMDb simply does not have the staff to monitor the millions of message boards and has to rely upon automated reporting of abuse. Trolls have discovered that they can abused this reporting mechanism and innocent people have had their posting history and accounts deleted as a result.

One of the other IMDb Get Satisfaction, Emperor, has suggested the following:
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/_smokejumping_moderators_to_fight_fires_on_the_worst_forums

I urge you to follow Emperor's thread and post your thoughts there.

Until such time as IMDb can resolve the problem with trolls, I suggest extreme caution in posting.
1. Review the board before posting to it. If the board appears to be contentious and/or dominated by trolls do not post to that board.
2. Before posting to a board, read a few dozen posts to get a sense of what the contributors to that board consider acceptable.
3. Write your post in a word processing application such as Microsoft Word. Before posting it consider whether what you have written may be misinterpreted or considered insensitive.
4. Fans can be hypersensitive about the death of their idols. Be extremely sensitive to their feelings when posting.
5. If you see posts that clearly violate IMDb's terms and conditions, report the post and ignore the user, but do so judiciously. Overuse of IMDb's reporting feature can get your account sanctioned or disabled. If you see multiple posts from the same person only report the person once and select other from the drop down menu. Indicate in the text box the other posts that violate IMDb's terms and conditions.
6. Do not warn someone that you will report them if they continue bad behavior. They could easily report you in retaliation.
7. Overall have fun on the message boards and show consideration to fellow users.

Thank you for your response Dan. I'm always considerate of my fellow users. I seldom get into flame wars with other users. Seriously, when a conversation becomes slanted I move on. I can't prove that however, because not only was my history delete but so was most of my profile on ToniHunterOne.  I did not ask a contentious question and there were far more insulting troll comments on Gandolfini's board that I didn't even add to.

What I think happened and I truly think a moderator did this was, I posted my query because I was totally clueless about the controversy surround Heath Ledger and before I even had a chance to read the responses I guess the TROLLS got ugly so the moderator not only deleted my thread, which would be appropriate but blamed me for the entire mess, again what mess I know not because I only posted the OP, but destroyed my 5 year profile. That shouldn't have happened and IMDB to date has provided no recourse for me. I really upset about this.

My Mollyblue acct is new because I didn't want to put up with the hour long clock and the depressing loss of some really great conversations I was involved in.  I really want to know what happened and who at IMDB did it. Mollyblue looks like a newbie account but my ToniHunterOne account is 4 years and 7 months in the making. All destroyed. I feel like a need DNA evidence to prove I was the victim here.

I attempted to edit my response to your reply Dan but that seems to have disappeared too.  So, I'll try again. First, apologies for the typos. Moving on.

I read your links and thank you for them. But reading them only made me more angry and frustrated because I'm even more convinced that an IMDB employee destroyed my account. Why? All of IMDB are complaints of mods and staffers not reacting quickly enough to TROLLS causing damage to the boards. My thread that consisted of one earnest question, albeit on a controversial board, my ignorance notwithstanding, caused someone at IMDB to delete not only my thread, but my 4.7 year long history, MOST of my Profile and stuck me with an hour long probationary clock.

I've NEVER in all of the four plus years as a contributor been complained against or had an OP deleted by other than myself. So where's the justification in this?  I want an EMPLOYEE to contact me. I want an explanation. This is a business. There has to be accountability for knee-jerk reactions. I know in the real business world there is always accountability, no matter how low or how high one is on the totem-pole.

Thanks for you time, Dan.

MollyBlue,

Once someone responds to your post on Get Satisfaction you are unable to edit or delete your post. I've been caught multiple times writing something incomprehensible here and not being able to correct it.

Staff members do not comment on the reason for the deletion of posts, posting histories and accounts.

I am really sympathetic to MollyBlue's plight, as it reflects mine and no doubt numerous others.

Basically, IMDB offers no remedy to troll infestation of the forums we care about. If the "champions" would just acknowledge that, rather than doing a song and dance by quoting this or that IMDB policy or guideline, or linking to other non-helpful pages, the sooner we can get over the systemic problem, which is IMDB's poor quality stewardship of its own property.
