The Gunsmoke series has just recently been changed to 'Gun law' which is a re-release in England years after it was successful in the US for many years. Why the change to a released title rather then the original name?

Sounds like you are in the UK and your US site preferences are being ignored. It's a huge problem downplayed by IMDb staff because they have been unable to fix it for quite a long time.

Apparently, even people in the US are seeing the British title:

The original title in IMDb's data is still Gunsmoke, but programming causes other titles to be displayed for some users. They must have been tinkering with the details recently.

When it was first shown in the UK in 1956 it was called Gunlaw and the opening totally different from Gunsmoke, I watched it as a kid and remember how it was.

It's always puzzled me as I'm sure it was called 'Gunlaw' when I first watched it back in the B&W days. I thought they changed the title to 'Gunsmoke' to be a bit more PC.

In Britain, the show did indeed go by the name Gun Law. A daily comic strip of the same title ran in the Daily Express from 1957 to 1978, featuring the art of Harry Bishop.
