Staff: Will IMDB re-evaluate their "no-follow" rule towards trusted users?

Hi Michelle,

I understand that you have a rel="nofollow" rule for alle content added to the site to avoid spam. It is what they did over at Wikipedia, and I totally agree with the logic of this system (avoiding spam).

However, in the long run, couldn't IMDB reach out to some trusted collaborators, who are (1) adding with review/picture/poster/trailer content and (2) who link to Imdb on their own site (3) and who have a general good behavior during at least 2 or 3 years?

I know Wikepedia is now thinking about a more rewarding system to their trusted contributers, and let them profit from a page rank. It would also mean that those contributors will keep Imdb links on their own websites "nofollow"-free in the future. So it would mean a mutual benefit.

Love to have your feedback !

This is actually a very interesting question. I have a movie site and all my links to Imdb don't have  a nofollow. I haven't been a long contributor, but I don't understand why the nofollow for trusted users. Love to hear a reaction from a staff member.

Try 'bumping' during the day time, US Pacific time, when staff are active. By morning, your thread might be buried again. It's currently middle of the night where the staff that posts here are located.

Yup, It is official, IMDB doesn't want to answer the question. They have been giving me the silent treatment for about 3 weeks.

They could have say something like:

- "Sorry Bob, I don't control the beast. It pretty much has a mind of its own and whether is does a nofollow or not is out of my control."

- "Nofollow whaa? Never saw one, don't wanna date it, sorry."

- "You know what, Bob, that is an excellent idea. That way we could reach out to our much trusted collaborators with a simple html correction. Why didn't I think about that? Tell you what. Why don't you come and work for us? You can even sleep at my place, I have a spare room. Or take my room if you want a bit more space."

- "No Bob, there is not going to be a nofollow adjustment. Why do you think we put the 'external sites'-link where nobody can find it? Duh! We are not against the fact other movie sites want to play with big brother, but we are kinda busy not caring."

- "Thank you Bob for the request. Sorry for the delay, but as you can see, we are short staffed and can't answer all questions individually. I'm not even sure I will get paid this month, leave alone I still be here. Did I mention that I don't really get along with my colleagues? Certainly not those nerds from the webmaster-department. So to come back to your question, I wish I could say that I will look into it, but I don't wanna lie to you."

But no, nothing.
I am gonna leave now and cry a bit.

Hi Bob, I've converted this thread to an 'idea' so other users can 'like' it as a way of showing their support for the suggestion.

Thanks,
Tom

As a regular contributor I think this is a good idea, still, don't believe this will be a popular topic since most users are NOT site-owners. But still, good try Tom ;)
