What's up with Popular?

What is going on with the popular page? I ask because it doesn't seem to be showing pictures with the most likes as the term "popular" would imply.

Basically the developers ruined the 'popular' page and for me a big part of the app.
The popular page used to be a haven of great photos. I could go there to see beautiful creative, work. To marvel at some of the sights, angles, captures and be inspired by the work to go and make even better photos myself, so I too might make this page.
Yesterday I visited the popular page to see a naked guy by a fridge. It wasn't even art, it wasn't a good photo. I don't want to see that stuff.
You have people getting on the popular page with 12 or 18 likes. That doesn't mean the picture is popular, that could be just 12 of their best mates who like their sick humour or stupid photos. As for the raining 'cats & dogs!' There are now at times 6 pictures of cats on the popular page. Some of them are quite ugly or quite vicious looking with their mouth open and teeth ready to bite.
Instagram developers, Kevin Systrom and Mike sort it out!
For me you have made a mistake here. You should have waited before this change to add another page ie 'recent' You could easily have a few well respected members around the world to cover the different time zones to police some of these photos that get through to the popular section.
If not fixed, I think you will see some of the really good photographers leaving the app and it being taken over by pictures of your pets or your breasts.

Way to go guys, nice change. Did you get some decent feedback on here before you made these changes?

I remember following all Mafia Wars screwups on this site as it developed, most because they hastily made changes without reaching out properly to their community.

Although I have a big following and posted a large number of pics on this app, I am not sure I want to continue. Another photo app will learn from your mistakes and overtake you so that's where I will head.

I totally agree with you Jonty. I am fairly new to IG and I too am confused by all the dumb photos that make it to Popular and how only a few Likes get there. Until I read this I was starting to question my own abilities for I have never made Pop and all those stupid pictures and the lame Cats and Dogs do. Is Jonty your IG name? I would like to look you up :) piratesandswallows

I am afraid I have to agree here. I think people are missing the point of popular. I am afraid the direction of the app will take too if this continues. I am concerned with the pictures being posted on popular. Instead of attracting great photos from good photographers, I have seen too many suggestive if inappropriate pictures already on there.....not to mention poor quality pictures.

I think too many people are confusing making the popular page with actually being popular. Sure I make the popular page, but I started out with a few followers, and found others when I liked their pictures and we started commenting on and sharing each others work. That is what makes the site: Connections with others, seeing pictures from other places, learning from others, and having a nice time.

I was very excited to see National Geographic join IG. I hope they choose to stay and am afraid they won't if IG becomes a High School photography club.

I suggest going back to the old way, and perhaps adding a section with recent uploads. Or maybe if there is any way possible, for there to be a "featured page" instead of popular. Instagram folks could pick out the top images and leave them up for so long, or change them every so often etc.

What's more, I went to the popular page today to try and find some nice photos to look at and maybe 'like' them and go comment on them. I refreshed four times and there wasn't one photo I wanted to click on! Before the change, at least I could go the popular page and view any number of beautiful, well-taken photos. Just very sad the way it's been changed imo. I no longer have the urge to visit Instagram, perhaps if I am posting a few of my own pics but to just have a look at what's popular in the community, no! Some of it is just downright, tacky, boring and offensive now. If I want to see pictures of breasts, I can just go to 'ratemytits' or pornhub etc.

No what is worse, I am seeing breasts from women, and now I have two people (on the other side of the world, thus my night) say they have seen naked men as well. Neither with as many likes as some of the really nice pictures from people with many followers and likes..........very sad.

Agree agree agree .. I'm fairly new to IG but joined right before the change .. I understand that they were trying to improve the popular page so that people with less followers could get on it, but I'm not really sure it makes any more sense now than before. Also agree that in the last couple weeks I've been seeing more and more 'hottie shots' .. Kinda reminds me of reddit now and that's not what I came here for. Being new, I'd love to know the rationale behind making the popular page, but would honestly prefer to get there less often or never if it meant that the photos would actually be great quality.

This Popular page is a complete joke. I've posted almost 200 (196 to be exact) and I've only gotten 1 photo on the popular page. Most, if not all of my photos have received a lot of likes and I still can't get a photo posted, yet I see tons of crappy photos with less likes on there daily and these people have 200+ more followers then I have. How is that possible? There are even a few people who every photo they post shows up on this page. wtf is up with that? They'll take a color photo of their lunch and it shows up there. This is pretty annoying and needs to be fixed!

I like the "new" algorithm. Maybe it's not perfect, but far better than the old one.

Before the change you only saw pictures of always the same 20 or so users on Popular. And having thousands of followers who like your shots doesn't mean you make good pictures. It just means you're popular. Basically Popular turned into a selection of the most streamlined, mainstream, boring pictures, with the occasional great one. After a few days I completely lost interest in Popular.

Granted, there's a lot of crap on Popular nowadays, but that doesn't mean it was any different in the "good old times". However, you gain several advantages:

1.) It's far more diverse now and therefore more interesting.
2.) Newcomers get a chance.
3.) Oldtimers have to post better pictures to get on Popular and can't simply rely on the mass of their followers anymore.

As a newer user, the concept of 'popular' is interesting. To a certain extent, it is an appropriate designation for a page that collects photos based upon the sheer number of 'likes'. This can lead to a sort of 'American Idol' effect ~ those with the highest number of friends are more likely to end up on the page, regardless of the quality of the photos.

Perhaps there could be an additional page for 'Outstanding', i.e. artistically exceptional photos, chosen by contests or by moderators.

Since the app itself advertises as 'a fun and simple life-sharing app for your iPhone...snap photos wherever you go to show the world what's going on in your life...', it is totally appropriate that the 'popular' page contain a wide range of subjects, including pets (I love to see other golden retriever pics) and dinners (yum, especially those from cultures other than mine!)

GIven the above description, I find it a bit distressing that a couple aspects of the app have been nearly co-opted by professional and highly accomplished photographers. This discussion regarding 'popular' is one of them. The other is the quest for a bazillion followers. Having large numbers of followers seems to have become a bit of a sport for some. However, I think that taking note of followers pics and experiences is a huge part of using the app...can a person really do this if they follow hundreds of others?

I've been using IG for only about a week now, so I'm hardly an expert on it yet. The popular page is interesting more for a look at what's popular than what makes good photography.

I like the idea of a contest winners or moderator selected images page a lot - it would add a nice touch of salon to the experience, and might commode to enhance the site's content and credibility. An easy way to add an iPhone tag, or dslr would help, too.

Thanks for the great app!

I just had a good idea of how to make browsing easier and making followings better......Catergories.....like when uploading have the option to place your picture into a group or tag....ie Animals, Plants & Flowers....there is way too many dumb fotos of teenage self portraits and ugly pet pictures etc and it puts me off browsing. IG certainly needs refining to ensure more serious IGers/Photographers stay because the contant is quality, not wastes of time and the App has been up and running long enough now for improvements to have been made....

I'm a new user and I'm torn. Right now it's half a dozen pics of women, half naked or otherwise - two are literally flat shots against a gray wall, and they have, or are closing in on, 100+ likes simply because one is pretty and the other one has breasts.

Yes, this is annoying and unfair and has nothing to do with art or depth or true beauty whatsoever. It's basically Twitter with pictures, where pretty girls can let thousands of men all over the world know what they had for breakfast. What a great world we live in.

But it's also human nature. If there's an automated system based on popularity, it's always going to be girls/women and cats/dogs. If photos that are actually well made make up a third of what becomes popular, we're lucky.
I'm not sure the old system promoting people with lots of followers would be better in the long run.
If there were a budget for someone to manually choose awesome pictures from all over the world, and ideally promote new talent, that would be the best solution IMO.

Is it just me or did the number of cats/dogs and girls/fingernails decrease during the last weeks? The popular stream is OK to me and I like browsing the various pictures and categories of them. You're right that it's one out of the whole gallery I click. I don't think that a limitation or control is the right way if you want to run a social (photo) network picturing (almost) every aspect of life. But I do agree that this should be a serious and intelligent network with a special style, character and way people talk to each other. How about an editorial? You can present special shots and/or photographers as you do it in your blog.
