S-Video connection proving elusive.

Using the Mark 2, and a new S-Video cable to a decent Panasonic VHS/DVD player, and choosing S-Video as my source in PowerDirector 13 (as well as trying PD6, PD12, and PowerProducer 5) all I get is a DVD logo screen, and no sound.
I have the usual Device Manager entries, and RCA works fine, but has anyone figured out how to get the S-Video working?
NOTE: The S-video works for the DVD player half of the unit.
The player in question is a Panasonic PV-D4745S.
