Create a Favorites button library for cable channels

Can you create a favorites "button" library that includes both the image and the device codes. I want to create a library for cable channels. I tried to copy a button from one handset to another and that doesn't seem to work either.

  • I'm just getting started with iRule so my understanding is a bit limited, but as far as I know there's not currently any such functionality built-in.

There are however a couple of things you can do depending on what you're trying to achieve:

    - When you copy a button from one page to another, the code(s) and device(s) associated with that button are copied along with the image. So you could copy/paste channel buttons across pages one by one. They would all refer to the same device.

    - If you have multiple devices of the same type (say, multiple cable boxes), and wanted to copy multiple channel buttons at once: Create a page with all your favorite channel buttons using the "Cable Box 1" device, then copy the page over to a new Panel and then use the "Replace device in this page" functionality to update the channel codes to use "Cable Box 2" instead of "Cable Box 1." See "Replace Device Codes in Panels" at http://www.iruleathome.com/support/ir... for more details.

    Hope this helps!

  • I kind of got to that. I was hoping to pick and choose channels for different users using the same cable box.

This is the biggest weakness for installers. I sell URC now and I really like this concert except for this issue. It would be a real plus to have a "Saved Button Library" that you would create that would allow you to pick and choose buttons suing the same equipment.

This product seems to have been developed for the power user and not professional installers.....

  • Hi Ranson,

iRule has been developed for both the DIY enthusiast and the professional integrator. Significant resources have been devoted to making iRule better, faster, and more efficient for installers: Everything from Device Replacement and Drawers, to Feedback Tokenization and the handset templates we're building right now. We also offer special support, free live training, and iRule Manager, a business management tool that was developed specifically for, and offered only to our professional installers.

All that said, there are always more features and improvements we can develop, so we're always happy to receive feedback from our users, whether DIY enthusiasts or professional installers. The saved button library (with attached commands) is an interesting idea, and something we'll discuss for potential development.

In the meantime, you can most definitely create a macro on a button, then copy the button from one handset to another. You can also copy the entire page from one handset to another. Even the though the layout may not work, it's much easier to copy buttons between two pages in a single panel than between handsets.
