iOS Version 3.4

iRule for iOS Version 3.4

iRule version 3.4 for iOS has been released. Current users can update their iRule app from the App Store free of charge. This update adds a new Automation Module, updates some other modules, and resolves several outstanding issues discovered after the release of version 3.3, but also includes a few new additions.

Automation Module for Nest Thermostat It's been a long time coming, but the Automation Module now supports Nest thermostats! This isn't the officially-supported version, but we were just as tired of waiting as everyone else. Think of this as a beta feature. It's tested and works well, but Nest could disable the functionality with an update if they so choose. Until then enjoy controlling your Nest from iRule!

Automation Module Usability and Visual Enhancements Many Modules now include visual status (spinner for wait, timeout, etc.), i.e. Vera. Some Modules now include pressed states for better interaction.

Other Improvements and Fixes
  • Corrected a problem that could cause issues with the ISY modules.
  • Corrected an issue with Automation Module and Vera keypads.
  • Fixed an issue where long module label names could move the module.
  • Fixed an issue Module status updates could fail for Panels with more than 3 pages.
  • Doubled height of feedback bar on Retina displays.
  • Resolved an issue with Panels navigation sequencing when no Home Panel was defined.
  • Fixed an issue that caused visual Feedback anomoly with Onkyo/Integra receivers and preamps.
Reply
  • Hello, A little confused - I have iRule HD 3.3.1 from the IOS App store but the 3.4 update appears to be just for iRule. It appears I cannot get the update, what do I do?

    Thanks,
    James

  • @iRule Team: Thanks, guys, nice job. The app seems to be more stable now !

@James: I'm not sure, but as far as I remember "iRule HD" is legacy and will be abandoned some day. Perhaps today is this day. The "iRule" app should work for you, give it a try. Just download it and enter your data.

  • Can you help with the Nest setup? I have purchased the license, and dragged the modules into a page. Under the properties of each stat I put the username, password and the serial number. Under gateways I also put that same information. I have also assigned the devices to the gateway's, but it is giving me a yellow connection icon and it doesn't connect and/or show any information in the app. Maybe I am missing something.

  • I'm always pleased to see a new release of an app for which we (the users) are desperately awaiting new functionality. It's therefore such a letdown to find that the update includes NONE of the longed for features.

There's plenty of requests on here for better variable control, panel manipulation, global macros, conditional logic etc but still nothing has been done. Instead we get a new automation module. Well I have NEVER seen any request for this on the forum, so not sure how this has been given higher priority than the aforementioned requested features.

  • I see there have previously been complaints about new releases in fact only introducing a new module rather than any actual improvement in iRule. So I'm not alone in my disappointment.

Just introducing new modules is 'check box development'. It just adds the 'features' that can be advertised for iRule, helping it win the awards it apparently has. But those awards will all be for nothing if new users discover its abilities are actually seriously limited and it would appear, not improving.

We need some serious development and inclusion of the real programming features we users have been crying out for.

  • Hi Ken,

I understand your frustration but I think we have to be fair and also see a few things from the other point of view:

I also wish for a lot of improvements in the app:

    - a volume knob (!),
    - a "window" or context menu which opens after pressing a button which is not bound to a side or the bottom like the sliders are
    - in general: moving elements or elements that use the multitouch feature of the modern touchscreens
    - more velocity and stability, especially on older iOS devices
    - did I mention the volume knob :-)
    - conditional logic and a lot more simple things, like more colors and more and different fonts.

But on the other hand: I have never bought such features. When I bought the "pro license" there were for example no variables. iRule donated them to me.
In other words: If there were no more updates to the app or the builder I couldn't complain. I got what I've paid for.

I also see your point of view concerning "modules". I only bought one of them - the Foscam module - which doesn't work for my H264 cams and which is not really documented. A little disappointing.

But on the other hand: We should all hope that iRule makes enough money to pay the team and the servers for without them our handsets would be useless within days (as soon as the website is down we can't make any changes...a horror).

So if the iRule team thinks that they can earn money with modules they should create a lot of them. For my own part I can't use most of them for I am living in Germany where most of the gadgets which are supported by modules aren't available.

Perhaps it is time for another license type ? "iRule ultima" with conditional logic, one or two modules without charge, unlimited devices and a few more fresh ideas.

Or a more complicated, individualized license where I can buy my volume knob or other fonds, based on small pricing for every single handset ? But I think we have to accept that we never bought more than we got the day we paid our license.

From my personal point of view two things are important:
AFTER I bought my license iRule limited the number of devices to 25. This always makes me creep along in the builder, trying to limit my devices. I am not willing to pay again for the right to create another device. Not a cent. So iRule should never take away things their users have paid for.

The other thing: If there are bugs iRule should at once publish an update to eliminate these bugs. The "blue bar" problem was there for about six months. This was really really bad.

    Just my two cents...

  • Ken:

Just had to jump in here...

I'm a bit disappointed too (I'd love conditional logic), but it isn't very accurate to say that no one has brought up the Nest thermostat. There are at least 8 separate threads on it and people have asked in a bunch of unrelated threads, too. I've personally been thinking, "enough already with the Nest questions".

Anyway, not busting your chops - I just thought it was funny how different you and I saw the Nest threads. You saw none and I saw them everywhere. (insert smiley face, comment about understanding my tongue-in-cheek humor, hard to infer attitude with text, don't take it the wrong way, etc here).

Guess I'll have to give the Nest thermostat another look at Home Depot. Now, about that Dish Hopper module...

  • Chops not feeling busted at all, but where can you buy a Nest thermostat outside the US. Not bothered to check, but I suspect it's a US centric device.

In any case, there's a myriad of features that are wanted by individual users, but there are also some fundamental programming features that would benefit ALL users, such as conditional logic etc. I try to concentrate on requesting the more general items as they should be more likely to see the light of day. But sadly, I don't see ANYTHING being done. After quite some time we have a NEW release that is basically no different apart from a new module which will benefit only a relatively few users (in the US). Whereas conditional logic would be a "giant keep for mankind".

Sorry, got a bit carried away there :-)

  • The conditional logic and more variable control are just two of the features that seem to be of interest. Are these more complex than just an iOS front end can handle? At some point aren't you going to need some type of control hardware that does the thinking and/or scheduling? Creating a very complex variable or even scheduling function would be difficult I would think if you're just building in the cloud and then just uploading onto an iPad. Just my .02.

  • ...and how about button images based on feedback that they said they were going to have ready for Q4 last year?

What's the point of multistate images if it doesn't accurately reflect the status of the device your controlling and furthermore what's the point of a selected image when you can't deselect/toggle it?

  • What about UDP unicast? I was told this was going to be included in this release.

  • Still hoping that there will be an iOS update that, in addition to opening to the last panel, supports the button pressed state image for that panel.
