ISY-99 Automation Module

The Leviton Z-Wave module looks fantasic, but where is the same thing for the Universal Devices Insteon device? From the looks of forums and user device codes, it does appear that it is a very popular solution for the DIYer, but once again gets snubbed for a Z-Wave solution.

  • I’m excited
I just tried the new ISY module, just one word, AWESOME. Easy to setup, I finally have working feedback, yay.

My only issue is the size of the buttons.
    1. The switch and scene is TOO large. Give me an option to use those regular 4x3 buttons.
    2. Given the size of the current buttons, I don't think I can put more than a few on the iphone.

    Good work!

  • My one gripe with ISY/INSTEON is that scenes do not have status. That means we never know if the scenes is ON or OFF. As a result the button for scenes in the ISY needs to be bigger because it is essentially two buttons together. Other systems do have scenes with status and we can use a smaller widget.

The space constraint on the phone means you will likely need to break up the pages either by room or something else that is meaningful.

    Best Regards,
    Itai

  • So far I have the Module working Great for lighting and temp. Now trying to setup insteon I/O Linc for Fireplace and no luck! I thought the Switch Mod works for On n off switching?

  • The switch module was primarily made for lighting switches. However, if the feedback is similar to what is sent back from light switches, I may be able to add something for this. I'm just worried that the feedback may not actually tell you what you want to know, like if the fireplace is actually on or not.

If you are able to, can you send me a text file that contains the feedback from your ISY.

In a web browser you can type http://:/rest/nodes

this should spit out some text, just copy all of that and paste it into a text file along with the address of the Insteon IO linc that is connected to your fireplace.

email that to dj.blake@iruleathome.com, and I'll take a look and see what I can do with it.

    Thanks,
    DJ

  • How would you setup FanLinc scenes on the ISY Module?,

I would like Off, Low, Med, High but the Scene's buttons or images on the ISY Module are to large and I don't really need On/Off for every scene.

Would the smaller "Switch" button work?

  • I too would like to request smaller buttons. Custom graphics and pixel level positioning would be even better. I have a virtual floor plan with multiple switches and even on a tablet the current module buttons just won't work.
    • In the upcoming release, every module has the option to remove the background (the gray semi-transparent image). You can control this per module.

As a result, the image is the same size but without the background its perfect for most floor plans (its actually the reason we added this option).

    • That definitely helps but for 7in tablets with, say, 20 or more switches per floor, they don't fit. The normal buttons I'm using now are more like 2x2. If I use the module buttons, they can cover up entire rooms where in some cases I have multiple switches in a room. The normal buttons are working for me now, but I would love to get that visual feedback that the modules provide.

  • There is a screen capture, let me know your thoughts. When I changed the height of the module to 3 (same as the default button) the are almost the same.

I am really curious about the feedback.

  • This module works well for me, so treat this as an request.

Could you put some little animation on the buttons during "pressed" (especially the switch) . With that animation, I can visually tell that it takes my command.

    Cheers.

    Itai,

Let me start with saying that so far, the insteon module has been awesome for me since its release. It works really well. Thank you for all of your efforts. I have attached my comments on the module so far:

    - Your screen capture above shows two things I wanted to see, transparency and smaller icons. I would love to see the option to choose small/med/large in a dropdown or input a size in a text field. There are applications where a large button is necessary and also when a small button is needed as well.

    - I would love the ability to dim scenes. I know this sounds a bit counter-intuitive, but I create all of my virtual 3way,4way, and 5way groups as scenes under the ISY with all switches as controllers. This works really well compared to other solutions. Right now with irule, I have the ability to dim the master controller of the 3/4/5 way circuit, but none of the other switches show the updated status. If I could input the scene number instead of insteon address in the "horizontal dimmer" module, I could dim all of the switches in the group

    - support for the fanlinc would be huge. I have my fanlinc working using scenes and programs on the ISY, but direct support would be great.

    - I have found a workaround to getting the ISY module working with more than 1 ISY. It involves copying the "ISY Module" device and pasting it (essentially duplicating it) under devices. Drag the 'new' isy module device over the thermostat or switch that should be connected to your second+ ISY. Assign the new ISY module device to another gateway. ---This is easy enough to do, but isn't documented and there should be a clearer way.

Thank you for your attention and I really love this whole system!

    +1
Or at least give us the ability to send the commands from switch and dimmer modules to multiple addresses, that way the devices can be kept in sync.

  • jjgyenese, multiple addresses in the address field is another way to address the issue, essentially tying the feedback to the first address, and the rest are all responders to on/off/dim/brt

referring to my previous suggestion, the REST commands are identical:

    /rest/nodes/ADDRESS/cmd/BRT
    /rest/nodes/SCENE_#/cmd/BRT

This leads me to think that inside the ISY module in irule, there is some sort of logic which checks the address field and inserts a '.' every 2 characters so that a user's input is corrected.

    An example:

I input 25223 (one of my scene numbers) for a horizontal slider. Internally, iRule looks at this value, and changes it to 25.22.30 (or something similar) instead of leaving it alone. I may confirm this by entering one of my device id's without '.' when i have time this weekend

  • +1 for dimming scenes. Specifically for the virtual 3/4 way switch scenario. I can dim my primary switch but the secondary wall switch won't show the same status.
