Lutron Radio Ra2 vs Insteon RF Dimmers + sensors

Besides looks and price, what technical differences you guys see between the approaches?
Did anybody there configure everything with dimers, motion sensors (and even shades) using Insteon? How do they rate regarding:
- Distance between repeaters
- Security
- Durability
- Customer service for HW
- Connectivity to iRule recommended HW
- Configuration: apparently you need the Lutron authorized guy to activate dimmers RF (!)

I'm deciding which dimmers to buy for renovation, got recommendations for Lutron, but just thinking if the extra price is due to brand position only or there are real advantages.

Thanks!!

  • Rafael,

It really depends on your preference and cost considerations. I personally have a vast Insteon network setup in my house with motion detectors, garage door control, lighting, thermostats. I am using ISY-99i and this allows me to easily create programs.

With insteon, repeaters are not necessary because you can utilize the Dual Band devices where each switch acts as a repeater.

Security - No idea what you mean by that.

Durability - had it for a couple of years now and not a single switch/device went out yet.

Customer Support for insteon is pretty good.

ISY-99i is controllable directly via IP or if you just want the PLM(no programming ability), you'll need a IP2SL or WF2SL Global Cache gateway. Code for ISY and Insteon PLM are already in the builder.

From configuration standpoint, Insteon is very very easy, especially with ISY-99. All the links and such can be done from inside the ISY configuration page and that page can actually be accessed from anywhere in the world with secure password and SSL certificate.

  • What did you end up going with? I'm in the same decision cycle just now. I've read that Insteon has quality issues on various forums, etc. Lutron's RadioRA2 is pretty well respected but to my knowledge it's hard to come by without going through an installer. If you found otherwise for the Lutron solution I'd love to know where you found them.

  • I had the same question and ended up with Insteon + ISY994i + iRule.

Don't want to be tied to an installer in case I want a new dimmer installed or a new configuration on my remote.

  • At Luis. . . I'm wanting to use iRule to control insteon dimmers. I'm seeing two ISY994i devices for sale. One with PLM and the other without. Since I'm using ISY Sample Codes in iRule, do I need the PLM version?
