newbee getting started with the GC-100

Hey,

I'm new to iRule. i bought a GC-100-12 and and i have an ipad 3.

the idea is to control the TV/CABLE, my EMOTIVA UMC-1/CD and my Projector etc. i also would love to use the relays for my livingroom's lights and the electric screen.

i didn't get any cables with the GC-100..

1. what kind of cables do i need to achieve my goal ? do i have to by the original IR-EMITTERs ? or can i order the 5$ ebay one's ?

2. my UMC-1 has an IR 3.5mm input. does that mean that i can control it without an emitter ? (simply plug 3.5mm cable between both..)

3. what if i can't find my gear codes in the database? is there any way i can get it to learn the codes ? do i need special cables for that too ?

thanks again for all your help.

Your GC-100 (if purchased new) will come with 6 IR cables.

You can use Logitech IR emitters if you want.

    Yes on your UMC-1

Global Cache has IR learner that they sell. iTach gateways come with built-in IR learner. Remotecentral.com is a good source also.

  • Note that Global Cache seems to be a different company from iRule -- I was confused about that initially. There's a separate support forum for the Global Cache devices.

Also: Yes, I would use the $5 eBay flashers. (Although I actually use $15 3-head flashers from Amazon, and with an iTach, not a GC)

Also: The relay contacts are only rated for 24V, so you will have to use something else that can control mains voltage from a closing contact like that. That would be a lot simpler if they also had a bit of current and ground available, so you could simply close the coil of a relay or SSR or something. Instead, you will need separate gear that is built to take a simple closing-contact input, and control AC loads.

Also: The IR input may or may not work with the output you have. If it doesn't work, you probably need something like a 1 kOhm pull-down resistor between the input and ground. If that still doesn't work, then it won't work ;-)
