Proximity detection

Do you in the near future plan to support proximity detection, by means of IBeacon devices?
Some ideas I am looking at is automatic panel switching based on your IOS device location. In other words, when you enter a specific room your IPAD will switch to the relevant panel to control whatever is in that specific room.
Then also the possibility of automatically switching on lights or music when an IOS device is detected in the room or when entering your house.

I contacted Estimote. Their iBeacon devices can be used one per room and costs $99 for three. Not a bad price at $33/room and if run at low rate can last 4-5 years.

iRule needs to work on this. Will beat every other devices/program if implemented quickly.

  • Roomie already has it...

Lets list what they have that iRule doesn't...

    iBeacon support
    Native AppleTV integration
    DirecTV DVR Integration

I am sure there is more that I haven't become aware of yet.

  • Roomie does have support for iBeacons, but unfortunately has a bug, so it does not work. What does work is the iBeacon detection of another IOS device. Meaning you have to set up another iPad (likely fixed in a room) with to start emitting the beacon, than your roaming iPad can find out which room it is in.
I agree that it would be very useful if it works !

Off topic, but in reaction to the post above: I think Roomies most attractive feature is the excellent built in TV guide. I am currently stuck with having to use Roomie for room devices that require TV control and iRule everywhere else. (Argh)

So, dear iRule developers, please add:
    Slider controls
    TV guide integration
    iBeacon support

I am sure that is not too much to ask for in addition to the 500 other requests you may get from the rest of the world :)

However with the addition of the above you will have Roomie beat.

  • Whether or not it has a bug, they have the feature there and I am sure will fix the bug. I have another home automation app that supports iBeacons too. More and more support are coming out for it... it isn't a stretch to ask for this capability.

  • Michael,

am in the same situation. Using Roomie for AV related stuff because of their TV guide but other than that I find myself often stuck with their limits.

The proximity for example isn't working properly. I bought Radbeacons hoping that when I enter a room the Roomie app would detect the beacon and switch on light on perform an action. When trying to implement it turn out this only works when the app is active in the foreground. OK agree you can still have room switching but that in itself is fairly limited.

So yes would love to see irule integrade the same TV guide as Roomie and would love to see proper ibeacon support as well :-)
