I’m frustrated

Reapeat on hold not working

I have a Sony Xperia Tablet Z and I'm not having much luck getting "Repeat on Hold" to give me continuous volume increase/decrease for my 2009 Pioneer Elite SC-27 AV receiver. First let me say my volume buttons are not in drawers, just normal buttons on the page. I have tried setting the "repetition" value to 1, 2 & 3 and the "Repeat Every (sec)" value to 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, & 0.4 with every combination possible. It will work sometimes with repetition set to 3 and repeat every (sec) set to 0.1, 0.2 or 0.3. If I keep pressing and releasing quickly and trying a press and hold in between many, many, many tries it randomly works.

The hard volume buttons on the tablet work great, but I can't use the hard buttons with my mouthstick stylus. I am a C3 quadriplegic and can't move from the shoulders down. All of the other buttons work fine. It's just my volume buttons I can't get working the way they should. Each press and release will increase/decrease the volume in 0.5 dB increments. That is a lot of pressing and releasing to go from say -25 dB to -75 dB, so having repeat on hold working correctly is desperately needed.

The built in Sony remote app controls the volume perfectly so I'm not sure what I am doing wrong or why it is so difficult to get it working in iRule. I have searched and seen many others having the same problem with the answer coming down to it just won't work on your device.

I really hope someone has some ideas, because I have tried everything I have found regarding this problem.

Thank you,
Bob

  • I noticed that a command isn't sent until a button is released. How could repeat on hold work if that is the case?

  • Did you try some fiddling with the "push-release" settings in the button properties in the lower left corner in the builder ?
Although this setting should not work if the button is set to repeat its command...
    ...so just a quick guess.
    Nocko!

  • I will try that. I'm not sure what "push-release" is supposed to do. I'll see if I can find some information on it.

  • Hi guys,

We've found that there are significant differences between how different manufacturers' hardware handles touch events. We've literally seen where one device sends the command on press, while another device sends the command on a release - running the same version of iRule. I think this may be one of those instances. I know the engineers are working on this, so I'll check on it and update you.

Bob, Push-Release is a feature which allows you to assign one command to a button push event, and a second command to the button release event. An example of where you could us this would be a shade or screen controller that has up, down, and stop commands. You could map 'down' to the push, and 'stop' to the release to simulate a momentary-style button. Instead of tapping 'down' then 'stop', which is kludgey, you can just tap the down button and make even fine adjustments, or hold it down until the screen or shade was in the right place.

    Regards,
    SC

  • Steve,

It appears that the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is one of those that sends commands on release. Although the Sony remote app that it came with can do both. I can press and hold commands such as volume, channel and the d-pad and they just keep going until I release. Or I can just give a quick tap and go in increments.

It's just that the app is total junk for everything else which is why I tried the TouchSquid app, but didn't really like it either, so I gave IRule a try and really like it. It is the closest thing out there to Pronto Edit or Marantz Touch Screen Setup as far as letting me build my own UI from the ground up, giving me almost complete freedom to do whatever I can imagine.

The only MAJOR drawback is this repeat on hold function not working on my tablet. For now I created a second set of volume buttons and just added the volume up/down command 20 times to each as a macro. This gets me + or - 10 dB of volume with one tap rather than 20 taps and then I can fine tune the volume with the original set of button that go in 0.5 dB increments.

Hopefully your engineers will find a fix in the future.

    Thank you,
    Bob

  • I agree with Bob - it is a major drawback... Especially when it did work earlier on all of devices (before iRule 1.4.x)... I really hope that you guys find a way to fix this bug... It is almost a year (and a few versions of app) since we discovered this problem..
