Why hasn't someone already done this?

After seeing multiple videos of people walking around their house controlling lights, heating, TV etc with their cell phones (voice or touch) I came up with this idea.
New construction - having 10 inch tablets in every room instead of light switch, proximity sensor, temperature sensor and intercom. All running Android. The tablets will be stored in a wall cradle (where the light switch would normally be) with and inductive charger mounted behind. Thus allowing the user to remove for using the tablet control/web functions. Today I'm gathering the necessary apps to test this proof of concept - does anyone see a flaw in this concept?

  • I setup a huge house for a customer and they found it a pain they just used there phone or iPad.

House had 5x Yamaha RXV 3073 amplifiers doing 10 hdmi audio/video zones and 5 audio only.

In the cinema room I used the Yamaha ap and made scenes so if you clicked watch tv or dvd ect then 150" screen came out of ceiling, projector came out of ceiling on the other end electric blinds automatically closed and 1 minute later the lights dimmed. Kitchen had tv that came up out of bench. Every room had at least 2 Electrovoice EV 8.2 back canned flush mount speakers, verandah had 6.

Cinema also had 2x dual 6" ev 6.2 flush mounts for front centre speakers, 6 x nice 8" 3 way flush mount speakers, and a Krix Siesmix 5 subwoofer.
Topped of with a top of the range Panasonic projector.
    Man what a cinema.

The house was time consuming but awesome.

  • In this case it would be great if you can link to a dedicated iRule page with a NFC tag or a iBeacon.

  • A little background - I live in an age diverse household. If all rooms have a 10 inch tablet in place of the wall switch for the lights - it will act as a prox sensor, temp sensor, light sensor, light switch - using tasker while on the wall. Intercom would also be available if you select it. Once off the wall it will function as a remote for the items in that particular room - sensor functions would cease. This is not to replace cell phone remotes or any other carried Android device. This is to replace all the sensors currently needed for automation plus intercom - for 1/4 the price. Plus it provides a tablet to visitors who otherwise don't have access to the system.
Example: mom 74 yrs will never take it off the wall while child 8 yrs will want to play games in her room or listen to music. I may or may not use it off the wall in my bedroom - if I leave my phone somewhere. But will never pull it off the wall in the living room since there are other devices available. It just seems a cost effective solution providing both access to and the data needed for home automation. It would be great if IRule was active on all the units and provided this interface.

  • You don't need new construction if you have Cat5/6. I thought of same idea. Cat 5 can carry 5v I believe, so pre existing wire will work. I have a NuVo system so I have a Cat 5 at light switch level in every room of house that has speakers (this includes bathrooms!).
The answer will be location services. I have 5 Apple routers or Expresses. iBeacons would also work. and then one could have their own device or a device sitting around. I like the idea of my iPhone as it usually is with me most of the time.

  • I would say that light switches are fixed, always work, never need updates, are universally recognized and don't "disappear".

    Tablets on the other hand....

I'm not against automation (I'm all for it!) but usability is key.

  • Gil, that's more or less what I have at home; Using ipad mini's with irule app open and basalte wall mounts with charging pucks. It isn't the inductive charger you are referring to (apple doesn't have that yet) but sure that will be available soon and it will just be a matter of replacing the ipads (which will be way too slow by then anyhow) and the cradles

  • Update to the original plan. Well I did build the house with zero air-gap wall switches. All the lights are either smart (Zigbee, Zwave or bluetooth). I did install 15 tablets most Samsung Tab 7 lite. The tablets are magnetic mounted to the wall above a receptacle with USB power built-in. Only one has the inductive charger. Turned out to be too much trouble to setup and use inductive charging. Added 8 Echo Dots and one Bond. All lights, AC and ceiling fans can be controlled by voice or tablet. Passed my final electrical inspection last month. To date I only installed 1 proximity sensor in master change-in closet. Since voice control is available in every room there seems to be no need to add more. Intercom system is handled by drop-in function of Echo Dots - which also plays music everywhere. Finally temperature sensors in every room are either handled by Ecobee remote sensors or the individual ceiling mounted air-handlers (mini-splits) installed in every room. I went with 3 outdoor units feeding 10 indoor heat pump units instead of central air.
