Express install did not change my bootloader. Unable to get into Windows XP now. The Windows XP option now boots into jolicloud.

My system has Windows XP and Ubuntu Ntbook Remix installed. In Windows XP I used the Express installer. My grub boot loader has not changed and the Windows XP option now boots into jolicloud and I am unable to get into Windows XP. I can still access my Ubuntu Remix install.

How can I fix this so I can get into Windows XP as well?

Thanks for any help.

Try to install KGRUB Editor running Ubuntu. In Options set the splash time from 1 second to 5seconds or more, so you will have enough time to choose. You may also set the default OS to boot.

The issue appears to be on the Windows side. When I attempt to boot into XP Jolicloud is loaded. It isn't an issue of the GRUB boot loader choosing the wrong option or not having enough time to sellect the proper option. This was an Express install so I know windows is still there, I simply can't get to it. Any more ideas?

What OS is GRUB linked to? UNR? And if so, what version of UNR is it? 9.10?

GRUB is linked to UNR 9.10. Should I post my /boot/grub/menu.lst file here?

Hi Jeff,

If you installed Jolicloud with Jolicloud Express, it would be interesting to see the content of the following two files:
c:\boot.ini (you should enable displaying the hidden files)
c:\boot.ini.orig

If you want to be able to select the OS, set timeout to a postive value (e.g. 30).

Hello,
First, can you tell us which type of installation did you use? The Windows installer or the Jolicloud USB key?

Hi Cedric, I think I have the same problem as Jeff. May I ask, would you please provide some details for how to set timeout to a positive value? Thanks! Andrei

My specifics:

HP Pavilion 514n
Windows XP
Ubuntu
just installed Joli OS using the Windows express installer
selecting the Windows boot option puts me straight into Joli OS

Andrei,
Try browsing to the windows partition with the files explorer (extra apps>more apps). Set it to see hidden files. Right click on the boot.ini file and open it with a text editor. Set the timeout to a suitable value and save.

Reboot and enjoy.

Or, since it's an install with the Windows Installer, just boot Joli OS and go to the Files tab.
There should be a Windows entry.
Then open boot.ini (with gedit text editor) and as Rog said, set timeout to a suitable value and save the file.

I should have waited for you to reply Cedric, I'm a newbie who doesn't know the shortcuts yet!

I'm having my own problems with booting windows at the moment. I bought an ex demo booklet 3g that has been locked down rather cleverly. I've managed to shrink the main windows 7 ntfs partition and install Jolicloud, and can boot that now I went in with Gparted from the usb live system and set the boot flag to the ext4 partition created by the installer, but there is no sign of an option to boot the windows system.

The strange thing is that the system was originally set to boot from the windows recovery partition, but booted the locked down instance of win7. I wish I could get the recovery partition to boot and restore the Nokia factory-standard win7 system, then repartion and install Jolicloud alongside. I don't know enough about win7 or Nokia's setup to know whether this boot-main partition-from-recovery-partition is standard or part of the lockdown performed by the company it originally came from. There is a file in the root of the main win7 partition called BOOTSECT.BAK, is this normal? Could I poke it in somewhere to get this up and running? Can an option to boot the BCD file in the root of the recovery partition be added to Grub from within Jolicloud?

Lots of questions, sorry. :o)

Hi,

First, what do you mean by "ex demo booklet 3g that has been locked down rather cleverly"?

The booklet has a damaged display and I bagged it on ebay for a good price. I have a new screen on its way from China (Cheeep!) but at the moment I can't see around 1/3 of the screen (top left). So having got Jolicloud up and running, I have installed x11vnc server on it and I can now see the whole screen from my other lappy (hurrah!).

As I got it, it booted win7 but a very crippled version - no access to the control panel, no access to wireless networking or bluetooth - can't even see the C: drive in 'my computer'. After booting Jolicloud from the usb key (I had to disable the hard drive in BIOS to get it to boot usb) I found Jolicloud was able to browse the main win7 partition and the win7 recovery partition (hurrah!). The system has been crippled by a autoexec.bat script which runs an executable called user.exe (boo!).

The way the system is supposed to work is that 'extended boot options' is supposed to be selectable in the bios (off by default). This then allows the user to hit f8 at boot and select the repair option to reinstall from the recovery partition. I can't find that option in the bios (maybe hidden by the broken screen - no vnc at boot!) so I can't get f8 to work.

There has to be a way....

Ah ok.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to help you.
Your best option is to find someone on a forum with a topic dedicated to the Booklet 3G I guess.

No problem, I'm having way too much fun with Jolicloud to want win7 on my screen at the moment anyway! ;-)

Hi Cedric and Rog,

The contents of my boot.ini and boot.ini.orig files are below. If I change boot.ini to read "default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS", then will I boot straight into XP?

Thanks!

Andrei

boot.ini

[boot loader]
default=C:\jolildr.mbr

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:\jolildr.mbr = "Joli OS"

boot.ini.orig

[boot loader]
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Yes.
That said, you should be able to perform that change directly from the Windows options in Startup and Recovery: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022
