Lenovo Ideapad s10-3 wifi not working

Hi, i have a lenovo ideapad s10-3 Model no : 59031861 with a atheros ar9285 wireless network adapter. . my wifi device is not working, even when the switch is turned on .

I updated jolicloud, turned on the hardware switch and the bios has it enabled. Also i noticed a peculiar thing, when i put the netbook in sleep mode, and start it up the bluetooth radio turns on but the wireless card remains off. :(

the soft key combination to turn on the radios is fn+f5 keys .

  • That's weird... I have the S10-3t on me, which I think has the same hardware in it (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't actually know) and the wifi works.

Can you try updating with an ethernet cable, rebooting, and then connecting?

  • I’m frustrated
My model number is 20039. I know i have an atheros AR9285 wifi card. I switched to jolicloud after reading about that the wifi works out of the box on my model (ideapad s10-3). But alas! I'm still wired. :(

  • No worries, I'll talk to the devs about this. These are supported machines, so they should work.

  • I don't think so, but I'm not sure. The drivers are what you need to be worrying about.

If you right click your network applet, is networking enabled? I just want to make absolutely sure that it's not a simple solution like that before we driver diagnose.

Anyway, I've emailed Adam about it.

  • Oh, so it does work under Windows? Then it's not the card, itself. It's gotta be the drivers, then. Not a hardware issue.

  • Kaizer, any chance you could try a live session of Ubuntu Lucid to see if that works? If so, we can probably backport a fix if it's available.

It works with windows 7 starter, I had to use the fn+f5 key combo, and the lenovo propritory softwae would kick in and turn the wifi/bluetooth on (even when the hardware switch is on , the lenovo sofkey combo could turn the radios off). So yes, it works in windows 7 starter with the propritory software.

  • Ok, so it works with Windows. So once again, we've eliminated the hardware issue factor.

Hum, it became a little bit confusing.
    Let's clarify this issue.

    Troubleshooting

    1. If you have a hardware switch on your device, make sure it's ON.

    2. If Wifi is mentionned in BIOS, make sure it's ON.

    3. If a Wifi icon is displayed in the top panel, right-click on it and make sure it's ON (Networking and Wireless should be enabled).

If it still doesn't work, we need the output file generated by the following command:

    1. Open a terminal (Accessories > Terminal)

    2. Type: sudo lspci -v -nn > lspci.log (the output file should be written in your home directory)

      • Sure By all means. I just thought that it might have been forgotten about. Since i did not get the indication that it would need more time.
        Sorry.
Just let me know when there might be a solution. Thanks!

    4. Cedric, I have done as you have directed, in the last step when i right click the networking icon, the enable wifi checkbox is greyed out.

    6. I dont know if this helps,

i followed the instruction from this website http://wiki.debian.org/ath9k

      and

running "iwconfig wlan0" . Give this output

      wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated
      Tx-Power=off
      Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
      Encryption key:off
      Power Management:off

running "iwconfig wlan0" , when i put netbook to sleep and then wake up (the wifi led turns on). Give this output, but still no wifi , as in my wifi router isnt displayed, and the enable wifi

      wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated
      Tx-Power=20dB
      Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
      Encryption key:off
      Power Management:off

Now when i right click the network manager icon, the enable wireless checkbox is ticked.. and when i left click on it under wireless networks, a greyed out "device not ready" is displayed , its not discovering my wifi router.

I'm also using s10-3. And it's only been hours I've been using it. I just hope that the problem doesn't come back.

      • If the issue exists with Windows, it's worth to contact directly Lenovo. It could be a hardware or a BIOS issue.
      • If anyone is still seeing this issue, right now there are only two fixes, both are rather crude... number one is to remove the cmos battery to reset the memory (some say loading bios defaults help too, but it did not for me). Number two is to use a winXP/7 installation (or PE) and use the Fn+F5 combination to enable the wifi device. For some reason with current kernels using this combination does disable the device and write something to the cmos to remember this setting after a reboot. But using the combination again does not re-enable it! So it seems to be an issue with either the acpi module not reading the setting right or the kernel not removing the lock, which leads to a rfkill hard lock.

I have the same problem with 25 s10-3 units at a school. I upgraded the OS from Win 7 starter to Win 7 Pro because we needed to connect them to a domain. But now I can not get the wireless to work. We did get one to work. It has a broadcom wifi card. The others seem to have the atheros wifi card and these are the ones we are struggling with. We can't seem to get the drivers to work. Any ideas?

    22. My Samsung N150 is using the Atheros AR9285 wireless card in JoliOS v1.2 OK... so it should not be a driver thing...

If you still have Windows installed on your Lenovo...
Check - during Start up... (F2 to enter set up?) is your WLAN set to be "on all the time" or possibly "same as last use" (I don't have a Lenovo to check what is shown)

In windows - switch ON WiFi using Fn+F5 keys - when connected.... Reboot ...

Does your WiFi now get recognised as ON, in JoliOS ??

    26. Belle -
It sounds as if your computer is running WINDOWS...

Your Lenovo computers have an history (even in Windows) of switching off it's Wireless on its' own...

If your actual model has a switch just above the SD card reader
      flip the switch, then shutdown,

      After a few seconds switch your computer again;

      when Windows has completely started...

Press both Fn and F5 at the same time

      your wireless should start working.

IF IT DOESN'T ---> Please post back here again.

    34. My wi-fi went out as well. Fn+F5 did nothing. rebooted and hit F2 to confirm that the network card was enabled in my bios. Then I went to: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downl...? Clicked on "Power Management" and downloaded "Energy Management" for Win 7, 32 bit. When I ran the software It prompted me to remove the existing version, I did so. I then installed the new version. I restarted the computer when prompted, waited for it to fully load, then pressed Fn+F5. A window then appeared that allowed me to turn the wireless card "on" and "off". I turned the wireless card "on" and was surfing the web right away! The slider button now turns the wireless card on and off as well and it did nothing before. Problem solved!!! Hope this helps the rest of you with this very irritating problem...

    38. Not familiar with this problem, can you give me more specifics. Keep in mind that mine was not the A1000 Ideatab like yours but the S10-3 model of the IdeaPad instead. The problem I resolved above was in connecting to standard Wi-fi.

    40. I’m thankful!
After several days or troubleshooting finally uninstalled and reinstalled Energy Management from Lenovo and Wi-Fi started working.

Basically the problem was that the wi-fi was disabled and Fn+F5 did not turn it on, I did not get any on screen indication. But after reinstalling Energy Management I could see the onscreen indication and enabled wi-fi using Fn+F5 and wf-fi started working.

Thanks Emiliano Pereyra for the tip.

    42. Hi everyone,
I had the same problem with the wifi connection, it happened when I restarted pc with android system and when restarting the wifi switch was turned off, after that I couldn't turn on wifi in any way.

I solved the problem with wifi connection on my s10-3t by the simply bios updating.
