Apps(Bars) Should Show Old or Read Items

I would like to be able to view "read" items, ie: emails, text messages, and call log. Because although I may have marked it as read, I may want to refer back to it without firing up the application for it. Two possible ways I could see this done:

1) In each bar, slide left or right to view newer or older items. Use the button on the right to mark things as read (replacing the slide to the right to mark things as read functionality). And use long press to open up a new instance. Unless I'm missing something, it seems redundant that the button on the right and the long press do the same thing.

2) When I slide the main bar all the way down and i can view calls, messages, emails, or calender items, show a list of all items. It seems like it works that way when I slide it up and it shows google reader, stocks, or twitter (but I can't be sure since I don't have time to mark everything as read).

Let me know if you need further elaboration.

  • I'm not sure if I follow the sliding options but I do like the idea of being able to see unread content somehow.

  • The idea of SlideScreen is it's just an advanced notification system, the data lives in other apps. So if you mark something as read in SlideScreen you still can see it elsewhere fairly easily. It's similar to how things work in the status bar in default Android - if you clear those notifications then you just go to the app in question, there's no way to get the notification back.

All that being said, it can be irritating to accidentally mark something as read and not be able to easily get it back, so let us think about this a bit and see what other people think.

    • I think it's interesting that the idea is that it's just an advanced notification system. I'm actually looking to it as a replacement for the most common activities: reading, replying, & sharing of email, texts, social and news.

Essentially what I think we're asking for is the ability to establish some static space for certain elements. Here's the use case I have in mind:

I read my friend's text but don't feel like replying because I'm busy doing something else. A couple of hours later, because I've set my screen to always display at least 2 texts, I can easily access and remember that I need to respond to the message.
    • i think the mail,sms,missed calls
      should work the same way
      twitter and facebook
work. they should show the last 10 or so entries

    @Matt

From the Larva Labs blog dated 9 Sept 2009:
    http://larvalabs.com/blog/android/and...

"There are a few principles and ideas that led us to this design:

◦The home screen of your phone should strive to show you as much relevant information as possible.
    ...
◦The existing Android design with various widgets on a home screen is visually distracting from the purpose of those widgets: quick access to information. We wanted a uniform look to allow an increase in information density without overwhelming the user."

My take from these principles is: quick access to as much relevant information as possible. That's why it makes sense to me to be able to view read items. Not only would this eliminate the annoyance of accidentally marking something read, but it would also allow one to review items. Say you got a missed call, text message, or email, and it was inconvenient to reply at the moment. Once it's been marked as read, you'll forget about it until you actually go to whatever app it's stored in. But by being able to scroll through or leave it on that item, then I can easily check and remember.

Also it seems like wasted screen real estate to me, for that top portion to always be blank. If the ideal is for everything to be marked as read, then you're left with a pretty blank screen, until a notification comes in and that will only use up like 1/9th of the screen.

To further elaborate on my suggestion #1 for implementation - referring to a single App / Bar, have the far left be "No Items" / the newest notification. Then allow us to scroll to the right to view past notifications. (or switch the right and left directions, whatever).

I understand your idea that the app acts like the status bar although at the same time most people do not have 8 missed calls and a dozen sms's etc waiting to be read.
I would like to see missed calls sms etc aswell as see my past calls. I find this type of support and information to be very relevant to me and my ability to use the device effectively.
If you where to add an option to show old sms's and call, as well as new/missed items I would be satisfied. This way you would also have the option to not see them if you wanted keeping your vision intact as well. The option can be a simple box ala "show last (0, 5, 10, 15, 20) items" the number would be selectable, and selecting 0 shows only new items.

I also thought of this, new items can be shown in bold and old items standard text.

This is one of the things that I feel is preventing me from paying for this app so far.
    • I keep editing this post I will make a new post now if i have more to say so I do not confuse people sorry.
    • I agree with nightred on this one. Swiping down to get a list of missed calls is a feature that I will probably never use, because I rarely have more than one missed call in the queue at any point in time. I do see why the current implementation is there though. If you do have more than one missed call, it is necessary to see them all in some way.

Here is my thought: I have tried many different kinds of home screen configurations, and one of the things I find I need the most is a conversation list. I have yet to be truly satisfied with an implementation, because the conversation widgets are always memory hungry and buggy, and dislike how many presses it can take to get to the recent calls tab of the dialer. While using Slide Screen, I keep catching myself using the call bar solely as a link to the recent calls tab of the dialer, where I can access all of my favorite contacts. I can't help but wish that this functionality could be pulled into Slide Screen.

The unexpanded call bar would function just as it does now, but when the slider is pulled down and the call bar expanded, it could have a list of recent conversations (calls and maybe texts - although that breaks from the specificity of the call bar) that would link to a contact screen much like the android 'recent calls' list does.

I realize this is a duplication of existing core android functionality, but calls are one of the biggest part of the smart phone experience, and I think you guys could do it better by integrating it.

I agree with nightred. I may have lots of emails, but I rarely have more than one or two missed calls and SMSs.

In contrast I have a constant influx of tweets and Reader news items. Having said that, I like how snappy it feels and it's ease of use. I don't think I'd really want anything to change, except perhaps the ability to see more than one Tweet at a time.

I also posted on another thread (before seeing this one) about my marking a calendar item as "read". I did this by accident and it's annoying because calendar items aren't really meant to be "read" until they are completed and it's helpful for it to remain there until it has been completed.

I would love to see a recent called list if I have no missed calls, I bought this software the instant I saw it and it is worth it now. I can see with the upcoming improvements it will be fabulous. Adding the ability to quickly call someone from my recent call list or text someone who I've recently texted would be very useful.
    • I agree with this; the top of my screen almost always shows "No items" for calls, SMS, and email, because I tend to deal with them right away (SMS especially, since I have Handcent in popup mode which makes it pretty hard to get a message without "reading" it).

I think there should be an option to at least show the 1 latest read item in that space. It's more information than "No items" but takes up no more space. There would have to be a clear way to tell new from read items, however, somebody's suggestion above to use a different text color, weight, font, etc. should do the trick.

  • I’m dumbfounded
I'm sorry, I think this is the worst idea I've seen pitched on here yet. The point of Slidescreen is to give you all the info you NEED on the screen at once. If you need to look at a text that you've ALREADY LOOKED AT, then open the app and look at it. If you need to look at it every 15 seconds because you're too stoned to remember longer than that, I think that's your problem. For the rest of us, we don't need space wasted on our home screens.

I'd be BEYOND disgusted if this was implemented as a "feature." Though I'd tolerate it if it weren't the default behavior.
    • view 1 more comment
    • While I understand that idea, I think the point is to be able to slide the panel even higher to hide things that say stuff such as "No new items." Then your screen real estate can go to somewhat useful things like calendar dates, twitter, facebook, and google reader. Typically I have my middle slide hiding all the bars at the top aside from one.
    • I think we define "wasted space" differently. You think information you have already seen is wasted. I think blank real estate is wasted. Regardless, a compromise Larva Labs can implement is:
-if you slide your finger to the right it moves towards newer and final "No New Items"
-if you slide your finger to the left then it shows "old items"

Also you can't really tell me what I "NEED," as it varies from person to person.

I would love to see this implemented as an option on a per app/bar basis. Ideally the badge next to the icon would show how many unread items for a group, but the bar could optionally contain the last n read or old items. Having recent calls and txts at my fingertips without launching another app would be invaluable. It also makes great use of screen real estate. Currently 40% of my screen is unused 90% of the time!

  • this is a much needed feature.

When I have no unread missed call I would really like it to show my previous made, missed or incomming call.

Same for sms. It would be ideal if kept my newest conversation shown within the bar.

Calender items should not be able to be marked as read. The bar should always show your next upcoming event(unless possibly long clicked to be removed?)

i'm never going to have so many missed calls to fill the whole screen... so a list of recent calls would be best for the call bar... just make an option in the call settings to either show call history in the call bar or not! same with emails... i'd love to see a replication of my gmail inbox in the email bar!

  • @ L L

It took me a while of using the program to figure out, but Slidescreen is not being redundant as you suggest in #1. The intro tutorial doesn't make it quite lucid, but let me explain. If you click the little icon, it will open that app. If you long press it, it will start a new "compose" window for that app. So press gmail, it will bring you to the gmail inbox just like if you launched the gmail app; long press gmail, it will compose a new email. Long press SMS to compose a new txt. Long press phone to get the dial pad. Long press calender to create a new event. Long press facebook, you get the news feed with your cursor in the status update bar. The only redundancy is in Google Reader since there is no "compose" functionality.

Once I realized this, it just made so much sense. It is a great setup. The wording of the tutorial makes it just seem like both clicking and long-pressing just launch the app's main screen, but after I tried it out since I was confused about the redundancy, I realized the difference.
    • view 1 more comment
    • Thanks, I actually didn't know that either. However, after playing with it some more, the redundancy i notice is, if you have "No Items" for calls, text message, or email:

Main Bar w/ Short Press - Opens up the Call Log or Inbox
Main Bar w/ Long Press - Opens up the Call Log or Inbox
Icon w/ Short Press - Opens up the Call Log or Inbox
Icon w/ Long Press - Opens up a New / Compose

Also, although the feature of viewing old items is closely tied to how it is implemented, I'm more concerned with having the feature. I'm sure a reasonable implementation can be figured out if Larva Labs decides to enable this feature.
    • Yea, that redundancy is certainly there. I'm not sure what can really be done about the main bar with no items. I agree that the feature request is independent of interpretation, just wanted to point out that "feature" since you didn't notice it.

I really like this app and I use it as home-replacement. In my opinion, drawing the main bar up or down does not make any sense at all, if you do not see read items.
On a private phone, you normally do not have more than 2-3 unread SMS, e-mails or missed calls and if you have sth. you read it.
So, in my case, using the full screen view for any item (except fb) is just an empty list. I don ́t need to see read items on the home screen, but at least in the full screen view of each section it is a must have to complete slide screen as perfect information platform!!!

When ive read my latest text message, or viewed my latest email.. It looks silly just stating "no items"

I find it funny how people are still commenting on SlideScreen. Larva Labs hasn't updated the app since 11 November 2010

    https://market.android.com/details?id...

    https://market.android.com/details?id...

Development is dead, which is a shame because this app could have been way more functional.

Granted Larva Labs just made something that's pretty impressive:
    http://techcrunch.com/2011/05/22/hack...

I just hope they follow through on Docracy more than they did on SlideScreen
    • You are exactly right, it is a pity that the development stopped. That there are still comments in the forums every once in a while goes to show that there is demand for this alternative user interface despite its current shortcomings.

It would be great to hear whether Larva Labs has considered simply dropping the source into a github repo for others to pick up where it stands now. Would love to be able to contribute in order for example to make support for K9-Mail work.

SlideScreen development is NOT STOPPED: the last beta (number 9) was released in March 2011.
OK, this is definitely not the most actively developed app of the Market, but nonetheless is moving forward.
    • So 6 months since the last stable (market release) and 2 months since the last beta. Have you seen any new features even being offered? Any features "under consideration" here in the GetSatisfaction forum being implemented? Or is Larva Labs just updating to support new devices?

But hey, if Duke Nukem Forever can finally be released, I guess there's hope for this app...
    • Well, let's not be too harsh. I second your notion though that the communication should be much better and that it is impossible to tell what the future has to offer due to this issue.
