[CALL TO ACTION] Put Up or Shut Up: Let's build the next Last.FM

Last.FM has shown us that they are going to ahead with this planned upgrade with broken/removed features. It's very possible that they will fix the site over time, but they will never be able to take back their silence and their disregard for user feedback.

If you're still as angry as I am about that in particular, we've been invited by the Libre.FM staff to work with them to improve their site. They're open to discussions. This is a really big deal. There have been countless people asking for somebody to build a new site. This is that chance to be a part of that.

https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/librefm-discuss

It's time to roll up your sleeves and at least try. After all, it means nothing if you complain without actually trying to fix the problem. I'm hopeful that the Last.FM community, regardless of what skills you build to the table, could make something that feels more like home. This meeting of minds is nothing more than that at the moment. It's a chance for us to discuss the future and figure out what we could potentially do.

I hope to see you guys there!

I am up. And I feel exactly the same about all this situation and staff and ignorance of our feedback and ideas. But Libre as far a I saw has much to improve to be like old last.fm especially as they don't have scrobbler so i can't use it while listenng music from my computer. But I'll join and suggest what I expect from their site so I can use it. I hope others will join too :)
but still I am making high hopes on Hatchet! *.*

Awesome! Like I said, it's just a preemptive step to see if anything even is possible. We'll never know if we don't try! :-)

Yup, we should leave last.fm to keep good memories alive, but why do not try other sites, or building new one? I thought about it, but I was afraid to post, good that someone wrote this. :)

I feel like we don't have anything to lose by partaking in just a discussion. Last.FM doesn't read this stuff anyway. They just don't care anymore, and it's sad. :( If you don't care, hand the reigns over to somebody who does.

It would be awesome if we could do something with Libre.FM, the site has lots of potential.

It really does! It has the code. It needs a slap of paint, a forum, and better charts. Maybe integration with Pandora or something. It's totally feasible as long as people are willing to do the work. At some point, the people who are ragging on those who dislike the site are right.

All we're doing is complaining, and those complaints are falling on deaf ears. The petition, I'm sorry to say, was a failure. It's time for Plan B. If you're not willing to do the work to change it, then just sit down. You're not being productive.

There is a way to make last.fm scrobbler scrobble to libre.fm, but it's quite difficult.

I'd like to see the Universal Scrobbler being integrated with libre.fm, if it's at all possible for OnDistantShores to do.

It doesn't strike me as difficult. You'd just need it to route to turtle.librefm servers. Android apps do it.

Route what?
I've tried routing ws.audioscrobbler.com to turtle.libre.fm but it didnt work.

I mean if somebody wanted to write it into an app.

In terms of your computer, you'd need to edit your hosts file to do it. I haven't tried it off hand. @Nat.zingg has and had some instructions.

Of course! It's likely going to be an open discussion. At least, that's what I'm hoping. I think Libre.FM needs to see enough of an interest first, so now is the time to sign up.

The only way this will work is to import users and artists data to libre.fm. There's just too much stuff to start all over again, particularly people's scrobbles. If I can't export and import them to libre I have zero interest in this, simple as that.

the export used to work on the old last.fm.
edit: If they didn't add that back that would be a major put-off. That your scrobble data belongs to you, i.e. you can export all of it at any time, was one of the very early and very strong promises of last.fm.
the problem is the import.
edit: this 5 year old article says import to libre.fm / GNU fm is a thing.

This sounds like a great idea. Although 'm not that tech-savvy with programming and whatnot, I'd like to suggest some features that could make Libre.fm just as efficient as (or maybe even more than) Last.fm.

Personally, I think it can be done. It's only a matter of time, and we'll need a lot of people to help as well.

I think if we got more people to sign up, something great could come out of it. :-) Look at LibreOffice, for example.

Well... I'm a developer and would like to contribute at least a bit. But like this fellow here has already said, it's not exactly easy to do so: http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/librefm-discuss/2015-08/msg00007.html

I don't know who to talk to or where to get the code from, so.... no use in rolling up my sleeves?

Seriously? There are two replies to the message you linked that you didn't even bother to read. So much for the effort you are going to be putting in.

Have you ever heard that it's better to keep one's mouth shut and be thought of as a fool than to open it and remove all doubt?

Sorry to revive an old thread. Maybe if we had a real FORUM still. :l

Just read another thread about this place. It's brand new so it's still in alpha but I've never really been disappointed in MusicBrainz. And since it's linked to MB it'll probably use its database for tags. It's importing my history now.

Their import scrobbles from Last.fm is terrible. Not only it doesn't work, but also they expect this:

"Go to your Last.fm library and click the bookmarklet you just added to your toolbar.

This starts the import of your listens. Please leave the page open and don't navigate away from it until the import process is complete.

After that, you're done. Thanks"

Seriously? I have 222,155 scrobbles. It will take ages to get all of them. They should make a service that works on their servers in background, not to run on the users' computers.

It's true, it's weird that they would make importing like that. And it also didn't work for me - had it running for about two hours and then it stalled at about 30%.

BUT... they have their code on github and what looks like decent instructions and few dependencies. Which in my opinion makes it more promising for future development than libre.fm.

And as you can see in the import guide, they apparently have a theoretical interface for uploading with external tools. So one could use something similar to lastscrape (or even a modified version of lastscrape?) to import the scrobbles. Which did work for me with libre.fm.
Of course it might still take a while to develop that. But I hope that they will. I will bookmark and keep watching the site.

Thanks a lot @ angriestchair! :)
