Is this serious? Before this "update", I had about ten pictures running down my sidebar, along with lyrics to a couple of songs. Now I can't fit anything in that sidebar because for some asinine reason, I'm being restricted to 200 characters. 200! That's like the length of a tweet? Why even include the sidebar still if youre going to restrict us to this extent? It's become pointless now. Ever since this new site layout's rolled out, I honestly haven't seen a single thing that's made me think "Wow, that's a great user-friendly addition." It seems like every single change has either taken features away or restricted them to the point of uselessness.

Part of the old last.fm's charm was making your homepage your homepage. Customising it to suit you. But now it can't be any more then a bit of text on a page that looks like anyone elses. It is utter, utter bollocks.

"Remove the side wall, replace it with ads, get more money" - Last.fm

I too made use of that space, with a lot of community created tools (which are now worthless). People spent time and money making those. 200 characters is a joke.

what's up, James?  Rubberbandman16 here.  I've seen a lot of your posts here & agree with them all.  I'm going to unsubscribe in 8 days when it's time & I'm out of here in another week if they haven't changed this shit

If they want to reserve the space for ads, the least they could do is partially show the About section and include a "show more" button that pulls down the rest of the About section instead of giving us a meager 200 characters for a one-time tweet.

That's a good idea. Something similar has been suggested here (a separate tab for About):

Side bar will be for ads. Nothing more. Like james says. More ads, more money. Let's hope no one is stupid enough to click on those ads.

Then i'm leaving the site. Ridiculous that they can get rid of a sidebar for their convenience.

Thing is, they don't make money JUST if you click on them, it can actually be just by being displayed (and therefore seen), so you might not want to check your profile or other pages of the website at all.

Adblock that crap, you'll be doing a service to show the community will and can deprive the site of money in one way (the other is canceling subscription)

In this sidebar I used to store information on which bands I had seen, how many times I had seen them and when I had seen them. I am completely devestated that 5 years of concert history has been vanished. Literally information on more than a hundred shows and festivals I will never be able to retrieve... Is there a way to recover this information?

in the Settings menu, underneath your about me section, it should say 'here's what you had before to get you started', or something like that. You should be able to copy & paste it to a microsft word document

There's a guy who sent a DM to me with the html code of my bio copied from Google cache. THANK YOU. I was unable to get it yesterday but you guys can try it, could be worth it. All I have in Settings is still a blank field. Maybe it's location-related problem or i'm still in the backup queue.

of all the bad changes, this is the worst one in my opinion. they forgot to take away animated gif avatars if they want to take away all the enjoyable things on the site.

This. It's not like I wrote lengthy details on "About Me" section, but 200 character limitation is just awful. And just when we finally able to edit the "About Me" section...

By the looks of it, we'd get all the old features back, but they'd come in their extremely trimmed versions. Oh well, getting closer to deleting my account, I guess.

Yeah, the About Me section is never going to be brought back as it used to be, they really need the space for ads. I wouldn't care that much about the ads if there wasn't an enormous banner right below my header that practically blends with my charts, but they decided to turn user profiles into billboards or the equivalent to Nascar cars. Plus the 200 word limit. No thanks.

Joke's on them, if they devote literally half of the space on the page to ads nobody is going to visit the site without enabling AdBlock. I have AdBlock but didn't enable it for Last.FM because the ads didn't get in my way or hijack/crash my browser. Half a page of ads sharing space with a little mobile site is beyond the pale though.

Last.fm is pretty much dead. They went from unlimited space to 200 characters. I won't be coming back to last.fm if they decide 200 characters is the limit. No amount of subscription will bring me back. CBS just killed last.fm.

They deleted the about me info and i can't post bandlogos or my other charts or just certain gifs in general. They screwed with the wrong thing here and i want the about me section back to it's former glory or no more last.fm for me. If i can't have some customization from the awful problems the new site has then i'm out. Hopefully a better website will come from this and last.fm will eventually die from all these ridiculous changes.

my profile was never anything very long or super huge, but not being able to have any images whatsoever for the sake of ads? i don't know why that idea makes sense to cbsi bigwigs.

customizing doesn't seem to be that tall of an order to me.

i've been using this site since 2008 but i guess it's time to hope for someone to make an alternative.

it was a nice run. i'll really miss it, but it's time to go.

this site ( or the people who bought it )  do not care about the userbase. it's that simple.

Last.fm was one of the few social media websites that had a space that was tottaly yours, which you could edit with BBcode, add images, links etc and it could be as long or as short as you liked. Some people had some GREAT sidebars.

when sb wanted to understand my taste in music & art (had graphics and pictures pinned into the side bar), I just dropped them my last fm profile link - was simple... now it's gone ;/ and there is no new functionality that is useful & likeable

Yeah, I mean the fact a profile so obviously doesn't even work for that purpose anymore (giving a cohesive summary of your music taste) is pretty embarrasing. 5 artists & 200 characters is so clearly NOT an improvement!

my page was once a work of art.. performance art and, if you include my journals and the artist group I curated under another username, literary art...  I spent maybe hundreds of hours over the last ten years tweeking it.....  and last.fm, without sufficient warning, destroyed it.... I would have liked the opportunity to make some screen shots at least.....  But you didn't care....

Same here Bill, though I knew it was on the cards and so have a copy of mine. I never used their editor as found it unreliable at times.  As a user since Jan 2005 and subscriber for a good percentage of that time I learned that communication is not something those that took over the early Last.fm were good at.  They started off badly and got worse over time. I used to subscribe purely to support the site as lets face it you got nothing else other than ad removal, a black dot and a look at the last 6 visitors. Wow I was so underwhelmed by the generosity. The social aspects of the site have been killed off.  I suspect this rushed change is ahead of a sell off to some semi related site like Myspace or some other data mine. Now you even have to log into a different site to voice an opinion.  No they don't care.

I think it has more to do with the fact they are not calling themselves "the social revolution" any longer. At one point this was a great feature. Facebook was just getting their feet wet.  Seems to me they are letting this go because Facebook seems to be the place you go to.. to talk about yourself. I believe this move has more to do with Viacom ( mother company CBS) also having a limited partnership with Spotify producing a video, TV and movie  Scrobbler ... LFM limited will add their new audio scrobbler to the mix.  As all these small time ( compared to Facebook) music web sites will/ have start(ed) to have limited liability agreements ( partnerships)  with each other to stay above water.  Facebook is paying 350 million on a scrobbling device to do it all. There isn't one of these streaming music sites that are in the Black. I don't put Pandora in the mix because they have a government subsidy going for them.. Yet they still are in the Red.  What I'm trying to say is, it's bigger than the LFM bubble..  I also liked my sidebar .. who hasn't loved their own sidebar.. But I don't feel it's the end of the world  that I don't have it. What matters for me really is the fact that I have a place to store my data and the ability to scrobble. The rest is dessert. I don't have an opinion on the outcome of LFM because it isn't finished.

I want lastfmlogos in my about me section!!!

What I read on this site ... The reason, no BBcode has to do with vulnerability of LFM at this time.  Having to do with Spam and other related bots getting through..

Whenever I had some free time, I would use that side bar for band promotion whether it be the upcoming album release dates or band tours and gigs in my region. I saw other users doing the same thing or something similar that made perfectly sense to make use of the side bar space. Lastfm callously abandoned all the great things that made the site worth supporting. Last.fm needs to be flogged for all the bad things they have done.

So essentially last.fm is getting rid of album art, profile customization and user compatibility so they can have more space for ads.  And then they say, "We worked hard on this website" as if users are supposed to like a beta site (which looks more like a mobile site) filled with advertisements.

Even taking into account the ads, there's still a lot of empty space beneath, to the right of your shoutbox. And if you're allowed to personalise your page with interesting stuff like pictures, flagcounters etc etc then people will be more likely to browse other peoples profiles so more views for the ads so it's a win-win surely.

Alright, if I subscribe, will I get more space (I mean like unlimited space before that beta) to customize my homepage/"about me"? Is it at least an option under consideration? All I had there was a plugin generating band logos, now I can't use that. Is Last.fm planning to bring back all that bcc codes that were so much fun and use to many of us? Or some html? Pretty please...

like a lot of other people, I've lost a lot on my side wall & that's the worst thing they did.  Besides the basic top artists logo, I had some words about myself, an interesting fact of the day, song lyrics of the day, a flag counter, several musical gifs & pictures, song milestones, top albums, several badges & random pictures, that I changed twice a week.  Might be more, can't remember it's all fucking gone now.  I'm another person who will be gone soon.  I don't need a broken, terrible web site like this that I used to love.  I can just listen to music normally like I did before I joined here & keep in touch with friends on here by e-mail, text, Facebook or whatsapp.  I don't need this ridiculous site, they completely destroyed it
