Is this serious? Before this "update", I had about ten pictures running down my sidebar, along with lyrics to a couple of songs. Now I can't fit anything in that sidebar because for some asinine reason, I'm being restricted to 200 characters. 200! That's like the length of a tweet? Why even include the sidebar still if youre going to restrict us to this extent? It's become pointless now. Ever since this new site layout's rolled out, I honestly haven't seen a single thing that's made me think "Wow, that's a great user-friendly addition." It seems like every single change has either taken features away or restricted them to the point of uselessness.

So, in the "About Me" section, I had...

Some pictures & gifs

A pretty long list of "seen live" artist, separated in "nationals" (and near countries) and "internationals". All with their "x3" or so, as "3" being the amount of times I saw that artist.

A pretty long list of most liked films, separated in directors, series, etc. All with their score by me.

A list of "R.I.P." musicians. This one I don't care that much. But all the other things made my profile MY profile, not just A profile.

I'm so mad at this restriction, because my "about me" was my own special piece of art, I took care of it almost every day, I can't count how many hours in total it took me to get it perfect... Counted all times together I worked on it, it would be at least two - three weeks in total, without any pause. I learned and memorised the whole BBCode thing, and could do it by heart. I had pictures, gifs, personal text, poems, lyrics, quotes, band data, album art, other tools, in it...

My all gifs... all pics, flagcounter, bandlogos, lyrics of songs... all the rest of the widgets... all gone. Yes, yes... i know that everything are in my settings area... but i don't care cause i can't do ANYTHING with this that i can see it in on my profile. That's make me sad.

Well... at least i can do ''something'' with my ''new and improved'' about me section....

I haven't seen any official response for this yet. Why are the staff ignoring questions about this? It's a simple question, is the proper sidebar coming back eventually, say yes or no, is that really so hard???

Haha kinda wish this was the answer. Prefer them to be pricks over sheer incompetence.

Apparently not, they probably don't even know what to say, they don't have many valid excuses for any of this stuff they're doing to destroy this site

With old "About me" section my page on last.fm was my customized personal website, cozy little place about my music world. Now it's just another stupid social networking service. CBS you ruined it all for me.

There is no social aspect to be found. It's just a money-making service, the question remains if that will actually be the case considering the amount of people they kicked in the teeth with this.

Even game developers of the worst kind aren't as silent about an issue affecting so many people.

Pay attention last.fm. The previous 'About Me' and additional sections are what made a user's profile unique - images, photos, tag clouds, stats, flag counters - the works. Kill the ability to personalize a profile using HTML and/or BBCode and you kill the user's identity.

1000 characters = ~1KB
50 million users * 1KB = 50GB
You guys seriously can't afford 50GB? 150GB if you have 2 backups? Why on Earth would the  limit be 200 characters? Are you guys texting SMS messages using our about section? #Last.fmAin'tTwitterY'all  #DemGigsAreCheap

"Why on Earth would the  limit be 200 characters?"

I don't think it's about storage. There are 2 options:
1. Temporary, until they almost finish the work on the new site.
2. Permanent, because they want those About Me sections to be as tiny as possible, to allow more ads. Plus it fits the new design with so limited features. A cynical move.

I am hoping that they aren't going with option number 2, but with what things are right now, it's pretty likely to be the selected one.

Since I first saw beta on my smartphone, I'm 99% sure that sidebar won't come back because of #2

Adding in more advertisements to generate money is such an extremely lazy way of doing things, and has alienated a lot of users already - some of which have deleted their accounts and left for good.

How about finally making the Subscription appealing, with useful features. After all, a monthly Subscription will generate infinitely more revenue than advertisements - especially when a large amount of users use Adblock anyway.

I think they haven't done a good job in marketing the subscription. In the few months I have using last.fm, I don't remember it being mentioned except by other last.fm users. I didn't even know what do you get with the subscription until today when I looked it up.  Now that I looked it up, I can see why they are so interested in forcing more ads.

The benefit of the subscription is the removal of ads and discount on last.fm merchandise. I guess they're hoping to annoy us with a bunch of  ads  to the point that we can't stand it anymore and decide to buy the subscription (not happening bc of AdBlock. Hell, I didn't even know last.fm had advertisements until  yesterday! I've been using AdBlock for many years.)

I think they should work more on their  merchandise. I'm sorry last.fm, but your merchandise sucks (IMO at least). They better improve their clothing designs and add variety or start selling other kinds of products like music albums, concert tickets, mugs with funny messages related to music, earbuds with the last.fm logo, mouse pads, etc.

And if that's not enough, maybe they could come up with new subscription services, special features for artists who put their music for download on last.fm, etc but infesting the site with ads and taking away features that users have loved for so long? Bad move, really bad move.

Adding more subscriber features would be great. As it stands, subscriptions now have even less features: https://secure.last.fm/subscribe
