unfortunately it seems that many last.fm users seem spoiled children with an enormous problem of deep attachment. It is a fact that impose an unfinished version is a gesture somewhat disrespectful, a difficult thing to understand. However, what I see are premature judgments of something  that people do not even saw operating in its fully performance. Change is always a problem for humans, the novelty always deals with adaptation and what is not known. It's uncomfortable for sure, but that does not mean it will always be bad. The problem is obvious, use a last.fm unfinished is really uncomfortable, but if what we have is this mess, how about trying to hold a few tempers and make conclusions when all this disorder over?

Yeah, some people are going overboard and getting extremely pissed over a thing that is resolving itself. Not sure if they know the site is incomplete. Though some people are just pissed about the design, which is different and some parts needs major fix-ups, but I am giving it a chance to see if I'll get used to it.

But you've stated why the majority of users here are mad: they forced an unfinished site onto us. Once the site has all of its features ready, I will give it a second chance, but for now, I'm not using an unfinished site.

Beto better read topics about complaining on functionality. Most are complaining NOT ABOUT change, Last.fm ALWAYS changed and we didn't complain like that.
CHanges are to be understood, BUT REASONABLE CHNAGES, and NOT SH*T.
If this change of new UNUSEFUl layout you are saying is to give a chance I think you just said everything about yourself and your (un)use of last.fm.

Most of us complaining, GAVE chance. Tested new version, filled Feedbacks, suggested Help. Nothing got answer not positive word. THIS WAS FORCED ON US. AND ISN'T WORKING PURPOSE.
I am not talking about temporary usual problems when innovations are made like problem with scrobbles, lost data, attaching some features from old to new version. To monkey it will be understandable that it will be solved by time all data is transffered succesfully.

I am talking ABOUT CHANGE OF PURPOSE of site. This isn't anymore site for MUSIC, for ARTIST, for LISTENERS, for SHARING, GAINING NEW EXPERIENCES in Music field, Tracking and STORING our music taste and information.

This is site for mainstream purpose, made for Touch Screen users who don't bother about music, but about flashy look of nowdays 'innovated' sites (who went dead after a couple of months or year of usage). Without GOOD CUSTOMIZATION, USEFUL STORED INFO, NICELY USED SPACE to present everything, and WITHOUT ADDED GREAT OLD FEATURES which won't be added according to stuff's no response.
Those who listen music and are there for that communicating between themselves can see that and those users are complaining the most. But stuff answer only trivial problems so it looks like only someone whinning like child in kindergarten for destroying its favorite toy.

So this post is offense to all those who care about site acctually and its usage.

Ty for your reply. Would like to understand better this change of purpose you perceive and seems so clear to you. Understood completely what you said, but if you do not mind, those examples of info and customization sounded a little sketchy to me. I'm not opposing here, I'm opened and trying to assimilate your point.

I can't deny the feeling that things can not take a nice turn with the changes, but your certainty, your conviction and furor is something that draws my attention.

and about your lacking material assumptions about my relationship with the site I'd rather not comment. I'm probably here a lot longer than you seem to assume. But okay, you look like someone pissed off with everything.

Hmmmm .... Methinks that a daily progress report from the LFM team would be most helpful. Perhaps then all this feet stamping thing would fade somewhat! There again, it appears that a lot of people are not reading anything and just reacting. Patience is perhaps what we all need to work on. My scrobbling through Spotify and iTunes is still functioning. I can message and shout at most of my pals. So for now I'll take a step back and wait for the bugs to be ironed out.
No point in stressing over something I have no control over.
End of!!!

The site and scrobbling is broken, and basic features not mentioned in the temporarily missing features list are nowhere to be found, and they're not even trying to listen to feedback.

Ofcourse people are pissed off. Plus, the scrobbling for the app hasn't been working for me even before the update. Makes you want to give up on Last FM completely.

Don't mind change, in fact, often love it.  But why no link to our friends on our profile page?  Connecting to friends is why I use last.fm.

It's not the fact that it is unfinished, it is utterly ugly and useless, and most of the coolest features and customizations CAN'T clearly be reintroduced with this crappy layout they are forcing as a "modernized" standard.
There is such a waste of space in the pages you have to clearly take the new layout as a whole or throw it away.
I am already in the process of exporting my data and deleting my account because i can't stand logging in my new garbage homepage, this website became pointless for me.
And they are also forcing me to use Spotify with ads when i have a Google Play Music All Access paid account.
Fuck Spotify and Fuck Last.fm.

Erm, I like it?

Words like "no-one" and "everyone" are always a bit risky to use when you're looking at 100 or so users complaining on a forum, out of a userbase potentially thousands of times that size.

maybe someone has already said it and I just did not see, but hey, those graphics and scrobbles schemes in the library are a good thing. The problem? Massive advertisements in a very disorderly distribution implying the scroll bar to see the minimum of everything. But that's the point, neither black nor white. Yeah, I know, the world is easier in the scheme of all or nothing, but let me tell you the news, the world is a big gray.

Of course they didn't. what you see below must be a figment of my imagination.

Just stumbled across this from 2008: http://blog.last.fm/2008/07/17/lastfm...

Some of the comments sound familiar, don't you think? And to think people are begging the staff to revert back to this... sounds pretty crap from what I'm reading here. ;-)

=====

"How can i get the old layout back?! This is back to the 90ties"

"how can i switch back to the old one?"

"This is terrible! I can’t figure it out! I don’t want to use a site I can’t navigate"

"I would like to get the old version back"

"Yeah, how can we switch back?"

"This is craptastic. Nothing works. The player says “oops, error connecting.” The top artist tab won’t switch settings (for example, from overall to 7 Days or 3 Months, etc.) when I click on it. Neighbors are no longer displayed on the page. Shouldn’t this thing be debugged completely before it goes live?"

"It’s kind of horrific-looking. How do I change it back?"

"What has happened to private messaging? I hope you’re not going to tell me I’ve lost all of the messages I had saved...?"

(ad infinitum)

Matthew Ogle is now working for Spotify, by the way, and is responsible for their Discover Weekly playlist which seems to be liked by many users. I'm listening to my new version right now and again enjoy it, like the previous versions. But as it is only 30 tracks short, I will probably switch back to my Last.fm Mix radio afterwards. I'm really happy that it plays in the Spotify desktop client now.

The Discover Weekly playlist is really very good. It's very intuitive and I've discovered quite a few 'never heards' thriough it as well as a few things I'd forgotten.

there's no freshness in "bring old last.fm back!":
http://www.last.fm/group/Bring+back+the+old+Last.fm

In fact, I remember an unofficial link to view profiles in the old version for those who didn't like the changes at the time. I do not know if it still exists.

Either way, I think it's a little risky to simply compare the changes in 2008 and those we have now. Yeah, there's a lot of equal reactions, and I partly agree about the sense of replay, but 2008 was 2008. Simply match the cases can be a bit flighty as we don't know right what will become of last.fm now. Which was my point earlier at this topic: less drama and radicalism that leads to nowhere, more observation.

Yeah, I know, staff doesn't replicate and some users feel lack of commitment which is justifiable. But lets go to the facts: there's no service like last.fm out there, you have an entire scrobbles history that by hook or by crook is still there, and if it really doesn't matter people would not be so pissed off. Well, unfortunately that's the scenery we have. People have their right to leave, but maybe they're being precipitated if not intended to spy the future results.

Last.fm should be simple, straight-forward and clean.

I really don't understand why there's so much space between informations... I mean, once you could see your recently played tracks in a box that was no more than 600x400 pixels. I can't have a quick overview of my music habits. Isn't that the reason why last.fm was created?

That's why you don't launch a site until it's fully operational, smartass. If you were around when they launched beta you'd know there wasn't any progress done whatsoever. They launched a freakin' beta. You don't change a working public bus with a fancier new one that breaks down every 30 minutes and expect customers to be satisfied. It's not rocket science, you know ...

MMMMM, but your analogy doesn't really work though because the bus/website was already broken BEFORE the fancier new one arrived. Indeed, if memory serves me correctly -and it always does- that bus was sometimes out of action for days. Maybe your bus was efficient and speedy. Doesn't sound like you were on the right bus though.

90% of the features that are nowhere to be found right now or are present but not working, worked just fine on the previous site. And yeah, last.fm had some issues before this beta thing happened. Why do you think people are pissed off? Instead of fixing what should be fixed long time ago, they launched a terrible redesign with even more problems (plus missing lots of basic features).

I remember when the site's primary function -Scrobbling -just didn't work effectively. For the best part of a week. Tons of complaints, mostly justified ones. And having visited the old forums prior to the Beta announcement, I could see that loads of users were having problems not just with scrobbling but with their profile pages too. But I appear to be one of the very few who saw any of this, which is odd, given that I wasn't a regular visitor to said forums.  I suspect though that selective memory or amnesia is an issue for some.

More like for the best part of a month. And we were told to wait until the new site is launched, yet it seems like scrobbling is still not working for a lot of users. But before they started screwing with this "beta" crap, occasional scrobbling problems and artists with the same name sharing one page were pretty much the only issues (besides some little annoyances) that bothered me. So instead of investing all this time in an useless, nonworking new site, they could've easily fixed the scrobbling issues and everyone'd be happy right now.

I don't mind change, but I can't scrobble to the new site. If the site now can't perform its most basic function, it is practically useless to me. This is sad, since I've been a faithful user since 2007.

No, people are not overreacting. It's just that this site has a limited fanbase and a lots of folks don't give a damn about it. Imagine if the same thing happened to IMDb or YouTube for example. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't take them one month to fix a nonworking redesign.

There are many features that are gone, with no indication from staff that they intend to restore them. These features are often part of the friendship process, which you may not care that much about inasmuch as you call people "babies" who may not be of the same personality as you, etc. Some of these are very subtle. One such change tells the story though, the change to "followers" vs. friends. I could live with that, but I can't stand the other subtle changes such as no longer seeing when a friend or user last used the site, or which of my friends listen to a given artist, or all the shouts placed on my wall (nearly 1,000), or which of my friends are listening to what "now," or the use of BBC code and other methods in "About Me" so people could leave good links in posts and could have a page with a lot of personality if they wanted, or widgets if they wanted, or more then 10 visible shouts on an artist or song page....

Liked your comment, Bill. For sure you have a point about the personality which makes me think. I believe that people have the right to be upset about it since the site was replaced with an unfinished version full of holes; but those spreaded extreme reactions is hard to comprehend. Take you for example, a sober response with cohesive reflection, but some people sometimes seem to want to discover the headquarters of last.fm and plant a bomb in there. I can't see productivity in this posture.

Hey OP, your analogy does not work here. Spoiled children get free shit and instead of being grateful they throw a fit and demand more. This is not a valid comparison to last.fm users. I was a last.fm subscriber (not anymore) and I wish to be a subscriber again provided that last.fm gives me a reason to pay. Every update has resulted in more features and functionality taken away. We have put our time in adding biographies to artists, translating them from other languages and tagging artists/tracks for everyone's benefit! They say time = money and I'm inclined to agree with that. It is our right to complain and make demands when we've put so many hours into this site and given them our hard-earned money.

I take insult to you comparing us to spoiled children. Some of us have tried nicely asking and giving input to last.fm only to be met with cricket chirps and more shitty downgrades to the website.

We'd like last.fm to succeed and be profitable. We'd also like our requests to be acknowledged and at minimum some sort of input or explanation for the changes. Last.fm doesn't owe us anything but if they continue on this path many people will leave. We don't want this service to shut down. What choice do we have but to yell in frustration if there is hardly anything left of value on this website and we feel as though these changes will kill last.fm.

They say they're losing money, well here we are on this forum telling them why people aren't subscribing.

Ah, but most users don't pay so your analogy doesn't work either. In fact, what you're effectively saying is that those who don't pay are the spoiled children that Beto talks of.

Well, there's no ' report abuse' button that I can see so I wouldn't know how to 'cry to the mods' even if I'd wanted to. I suspect though that your comment Just wasn't very pleasant or relevant. Probably summat to do with that. Anyway, it's a nice sunny morning. Maybe the improvement in the weather will help motivate you in sorting out your anger issues. I don't want to spend the rest of my day worrying about you.

My laptop is 1366x720p when I enter the site everything is bloated and I need to scroll endlessly....

For the time the site is dead. Nothing much to do, nothing much to enjoy.

I think that the biggest problem with last.fm's changes is that they change too much at a time. Too drastically. Take a look at Google services - they change moderately, adding something here, changing something there.
The best way to develop is by evolution, not revolution!

The reason people are complaining is this release is like telling someone who owns a cat they very much adore that they are going to have it upgraded.

The owner after a brief consultancy period then gets the cat back but although it now has orange and black stripes and is very cuddly it has no legs, lungs or teeth.

When they ring/ask about these fundamental features for a cat to live being missing the reply is that it may be considered in the future or get no answer.

Now they have a cuddly cushion when they actually wanted a cat.

Are you sure they didn't swap your cat with a tiger?!

OK, so imagine they gave you your cat-tiger thing, and you loved it, but everyone around you is like "But it only has one eye and 3 legs! We hate it!" and you can see it has 2 eyes and you're like "But I like my tigercat" and everyone else is like "No you're an idiot, your catiger is obviously broken"

I lost where I was going with this

Change does suck... we get used to it. However, no other website in the modern age releases something so nonfunctional before it is ready. It isn't 2005 anymore. And fine, maybe a day or so of complete mess, but this mess has been a week and counting. The design is the LEAST of this site's problems.
