An Idea For Artists' Photos

I have an idea that should definitely be implemented immediately. Do you know how artists' photos are oftentimes unfairly manipulated into being the top ones? It's something that's been pushing my buttons for quite a few years now. I remember one guy on the Olivia Newton-John page would upload some truly lousy images and within the same day he'd have like 52 upvotes wtf. And then there's this dude on the Benoît Pioulard page who has the present top image and he had a solid 100 upvotes the same day the image was uploaded. Is this all performed with sock accounts or is there some glitch in the voting system?

Well, I was thinking... let the individual users choose which photo represents whatever artist upon their own profiles, and keep the main image upon the artists' pages in a state of perpetual shift (like the sub-mains once did, before the site alterations of last year).

I suppose this is a rather complex alteration to perform, but how stellar the site would become! Okay, it's clearly already quite stellar, but there's always more room in the cosmos for growth... although dark matter does remain a mystery.

In closing, here's a beautiful song for you...

A similar idea has been suggested before, and it's something I'd like to see too. Unfortunately the staff never responded to that thread so hopefully this one gets some more attention.

As is the case with music, everyone has a different opinion about artist images. Some might like the current main image, some might hate it, and as you mentioned some even go out of their way to forcibly decide for everyone else.

Being able to choose from the images gives users more control over the charts on their profiles and, in my opinion, a more personal touch. It also helps with the unfortunate problem of artists sharing the same artist page. If a female indie pop singer is my top artist of the week, I'd rather not have their artist image on my profile be of a death metal band who just happen to share the same name.

Excellent point. Although, if we all put our optimist hats on for a second, this particular issue ought to be resolved by the eventual completion of the site/catalogue - certainly that is the staff's intention.

I second the suggestion and agreement about this. Aside from the issues you've both mentioned about idiots creating dummy accounts to vote up their own images (I think suggesting it might be a glitch is being generous), I've also encountered a similar problem where an artist's Last FM listeners aren't that many or that active, so an image stays as the main image for ages. Sometimes these images are the best selection out of a bad bunch, but not always - the neo soul singer Lina springs to my mind, with regards to this problem.

I would love if this feature was implemented but I fear it'll be viewed as too much effort for no reward (from their perspective).

Yes. It's a nice idea that should be considered when/ if the website leaves Beta as other features, particularly ones we're still missing from the previous site, must take priority.

Yes, this would be amazing. More customisation on our profiles is always a welcome addition.

I think particularly if the return of BCC code stuff won't be returning, users being able to put their own stamp on their profile is a plus - to a point, obviously.
