An option to choose which artist photo will display on our profile

  • Under Consideration
As most people should know, the image voting system is awful on this site. Since we don't know how long the issue of people creating fake accounts to up-vote photos will last, there should be an option for changing which artist photo displays on our profile.
Like, when a user goes to an artist page and to the photo gallery, in the voting section, there can be a button like: "Pin this on my profile" and that way whenever they appear under top artists, that is the photo you see on your page. Doing this could actually stop people from making fake profiles now that I think about it... If everyone can finally be happy about what artist photo they see, no sense in crazily up-voting photos with multiple accounts.

Secondly, there should be a formula to how votes count, like votes from 5 years ago shouldn't still be as strong as recent votes, the same way popular search results work. For artists who aren't mainstream, the photo gallery is stuck in this rut where new fans are constantly up-voting all the old photos and newly added photos are never seen.

I posted an idea quite similar to this one about a year ago. Sure would be swell if the coders could make this a reality. Hmm, Lastfm's already the greatest website on earth (except for maybe playdamage) and i can't help but wonder if we'll be able to handle the magnificence if they pull this request through.

The thing is, they'd also need to implement the same thing for headers because people are trolling with those, too.

Please consider this, last.fm
Someone just used over 10 fake accounts to downvote a picture and there's nothing anyone can do about it since we already voted.

Good idea. It's way too easy to make an account and abuse the photo system. My Rihanna pic got main and within like an hour it had more than 60 down votes.

This desperately needs to be prioritised, I'm sick and tired of seeing photos drop from the top 10 to around 100 after getting 20 downvotes in a few minutes.

This keeps happening to me, I know you saw my posts. Sorry for a few them but I wasn't sure how it worked on here. I finally figured to ask for help on it. I uploaded a new Rihanna picture and within about 30 mins of it being main it had more than 60 downvotes which I know isn't normal. There's a troll that's going around doing all the big artists.

I got Beyonce's pics to update with newer pics and by the nxt morning all the old pics were back in the first page and main. It's always the same two 'Hold Up' pics too. It's so annoying. I wouldn't mind if they were all current pics but the Rihanna pics they up is from 2008/2011!

This needs to happen! Everyone has diff tastes but more importantly the trolls. The trolls abuse the photo system so much. I don't understand why anyone would or has the time to do this but wtv. All the big artists mains are old pictures that no one even likes. No current pic lasts as main cuz they vote em down way too fast. If we can all pin a certain one we like, the trolls wouldn't really have no reason to be doing what they're doing. They probably still would but if I can have current pictures as my artists main I would be very happy!

I got a lot of replies in my last thread that 'maybe ppl just don't like the pics' no. The picture won't even be uploaded more than 20 mins and it happens. It's someone that watches and dislikes all the new pics. It's diff if people dnt like em but literally everyone is commenting 'up' on new pics and 'down' to all the old pictures. They aren't even nice old pictures that they choose. People would rather have something current.

there maybe some problems when every single user begin to upload pics fo himself, a hundreds of dublicates, differently cropped, colored/bw, etc, trolls can abuse this for example with creating a big picture in their charts by upload a small pieces as artists main. You will not see that in your charts but there will be a hundreds pages in artists profiles , so no good. There need to think about how to implement this feature right.

I want this feature too, but I think that new catalog should be an absolute priority update, any other functions can wait.

Of course the catalogue is more important, but some quick tweaks can be done en passant.

I think you have an good point there: Uploading of pictures in general could increase because people like to modify their profiles. So the pinning feature could cause a need for more server capacity, but that's quite normal for new features and it will also make the site more interesting.

The duplicates and inappropriate trash pictures are already present without the pinning feature, it's just necessary to make sure that trolling won't effect other users. I can think of only two cases where it could effect them: 1. When a user looks up the artist profile pictures and 2. when he visits a troll profile. The pictures of the artist profile are sorted by rating, so the trash shouldn't be able to land on top most of the time. Really inappropriate pictures still can be reported to the moderators to remove them.
And the other case, when you visit a troll profile, you see that he has uploaded the wrong pictures and maybe you're slightly confused because the pics don't match the artist names. Again you have the option to report the pictures or to simply ignore it.
But I would have another suggestion: We could use an option to switch the picture grid on a profile page between 3 states:
  1. Profile view (the chosen pictures of the profile owner)
  2. Last.fm community view (shows the top rated picture as we have it now)
  3. Your own view (the pictures you have chosen)

Here's proof people are just trolling the system, Some people told me oh they just don't like new pics uploaded, no. Anytime me or someone else uploads a new pic of Bey, Rih or Nicki they will get the same exact amouts of dislikes as they do likes. I caught it happen. I uploaded this pic of Beyonce today and within less thaat 5 mins I kept refreshing and it had new dislikes every second till it eventually stopped at the same amount of likes as dislikes and is still like that. Pls give us this option. We are stuck with these same pics for the artits for months!

I'm sorry this is happening to you - I can imagine the frustration.   I recommend patience..  I think the last.fm team is busy with other more critical projects.  My advice: just chill out on it for a while, let the trolls do their thing, close your eyes and listen to some music.

Can we get an update on this topic? Five months ago, one user complained how one user called Bieber shit posted disgusting pictures of a popular teenage artist on the last.FM and adding them to their pictures gallery. https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/to... Nobody wants to see pornography or nasty pictures as the main pin-up image on his profile. I have no desire to have photography of an artist how he is spreading his anus or outdated photography on my profile thank you very much! That is why the Administration should modernize the gallery, build an anti-spam filter that will prevent this sort of behavior in the future and allow us to choose which photo we will pin-up on our profile.

They do need to modernise it, but this reply from Jon in another thread indicates that we'll all have to be a bit patient for the next few months:

...the data team are 100% committed to delivering a mission critical project right now (rebuilding the realtime scrobble storage service), to the exclusion of pretty much everything else.

Sigh, I have grown sick and tired of people (trolls) who go out of the way to make sure "their" chosen picture stays as the top of the profile. I'm not just talking about nsfw images, but generally just voting to change a picture to keep it lively only for the previous picture to reappear the next day. It's practically a fight when it comes to choosing images and I chose to not be part of it.

There really needs to be a reform. Otherwise this is why we can't have nice things.

I've noticed another curious and very suspicious trend with regards to artist images.

Usually it'll go hand-in-hand with it reaching main image status with almost no (if any) down votes, but I've noticed on more than one occasion that the image will have been uploaded by a user who has never listened to the artist concerned - not once. Also, their listening stats are often very...sparse - almost like it's not a proper account, hmmm...

Bumping this just because during the last 24 hours someone has downvoted every single (30+) recent picture of Fever Ray down to the last page of pictures, which will have taken some time considering pretty much of them were right there at the top last night. Being able to choose the pic would so much, I can't believe it hasn't been done since the beginning.

I really feel this should be "planned" rather than merely "under consideration".

Aside from it being a subtle way to facilitate profile personalisation (an oft and long-lamented lost feature), but it would only benefit Last FM's more active and interactive users, which I would hope are of a higher priority.

Users who rarely actually visit the site could and would just have the default main image. Furthermore, it would hopefully stop people feeling the need to create fake accounts purely for the purpose of uploading and voting on images as they would be able to assign whatever image they wanted as the main, instead of trying to game the system to get their own image up top. I'm sure there will still be some who do this to get the default-main spot, seeing it as some kind of kudos, but I think adding this feature is more likely to make the experience far better for honest users.

If implemented, I would suggest there's an argument for expanding it to album covers, since occasionally problems occur there (e.g. Fifth Harmony's "Reflection" album keeps having the deluxe edition artwork voted up - the B&W version is correct, not the colour one) or there have been variations to the artwork because of region or media type (i.e. CD vs digital album artwork).

Examples off the top of my head: Aly & AJ's "Insomniatic", Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway", Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time", Ciara's "Fantasy Ride", Tina Arena's "Don't Ask", JoJo's self-titled album, Jennifer Paige's "Starflower", etc, etc. In all the cases I've listed, neither variation is actually wrong but users want to see the artwork they know and own; certainly I do. This would also help with albums and singles that have the same name, so people can choose which they want to have appear in their library.

Actually, the more I think about it and remember all these variations, the more I think this should definitely apply to album artwork, too!

You'd have the option of viewing someone's profile without all the images slowing down your PC, and if you're brave enough to click the 'About Me' tab, you can read more about the user and all the .gif glory! I want this.
^I'm for this too, either "About me" tab or "show more" button to see the rest of it.

The "show more" option sounds good too. Do you think if we talk about it enough in every topic the developers will notice how much we want this feature? :P (I kid, they won't notice. :( )

>>>Think it would be a shame to restrict it to a subscriber-only benefit but I suppose it would be a shrewd business decision to encourage more subscriptions.

We have a small team, which means we have to carefully consider how time and resources are spent.  Everything we do has to have a clear business case associated with it, whether that's growing our overall audience, increasing subscriber base, increasing page views, etc. There are many things we want to do eventually, which we simply can't do right now.

This is this is a customisation / personalisation feature for registered users, so that immediately earmarks it as a potential subscriber benefit.  Yes, it would be really great to make it available to everyone, but there are costs associated with building the feature (time spent on this is always time that could be spent working on something else) and supporting it (we'd presumably need to increase our storage requirements per user, compared to what we're currently using).  Limiting to subscribers makes sense here, as it justifies the development cost, gives people another benefit to subscribing, and reduces the storage requirement to a smaller sub-set of registered users.  That doesn't necessarily mean we will make it subscriber only, but I think there's stronger case for building it if we do, and I'd rather see it as subscriber perk than not at all.

>>>>Does your comment mean it'll either appear as a subscriber benefit or not at all...or am I reading too much into your wording, Jon?

No, I'm just setting the expectation early that IF we did this, there's a (fairly strong) possibility that it would be a subscriber perk, so don't be surprised if that's what happens.  It might not though; I like the idea G.G.B. suggested with pins, and if we were to make it for everyone, perhaps we'd go down that route instead.

Ultimately it's not my decision and it's not set in stone either (in the end, we might not build this for whatever reason, most likely time/resources or technical limitations).  Though I will pass your feedback on to the product and development team to take into consideration.

The basic concept of pins or do you mean adding a vote-impacting effect, too?

The first I 100% agree with, the latter I'm dubious about the point or purpose of it - doubly so if resource usage is such an issue.

If you guys can't make this feature happen, Is there anyway we can make it harder for troll accounts to be made ? The troll in the Rihanna pictures has at least 200 accounts, I have proof of it. One old pic from 2/3 years ago went from 320 votes to 505 votes in less than 10 minutes. The troll stopped for a few months and it was so nice but they can back recently and knocked all the new good pics down and only let black and white photos get upvoted.

Maybe you can change the limit when it comes to voting for pics? at least have to be user for than a month and listen to more music? It's making the website ugly and unenjoyable. Or at least make a feature where you can see who voted for the pic so you guys can delete all the troll/inactive accounts. That would at least help a lot.

Or you can have someone from the teams job be/ add someone to monitor the pictures?

If a certain picture is being trolled put a freeze on it or something, there has to be more that could be done, this is one of the biggest complaints, You guys have been around for a long time and we really enjoy the site.. There has to be a way we can all figure this out.
