An option to choose which artist photo will display on our profile

  • Under Consideration
As most people should know, the image voting system is awful on this site. Since we don't know how long the issue of people creating fake accounts to up-vote photos will last, there should be an option for changing which artist photo displays on our profile.
Like, when a user goes to an artist page and to the photo gallery, in the voting section, there can be a button like: "Pin this on my profile" and that way whenever they appear under top artists, that is the photo you see on your page. Doing this could actually stop people from making fake profiles now that I think about it... If everyone can finally be happy about what artist photo they see, no sense in crazily up-voting photos with multiple accounts.

Secondly, there should be a formula to how votes count, like votes from 5 years ago shouldn't still be as strong as recent votes, the same way popular search results work. For artists who aren't mainstream, the photo gallery is stuck in this rut where new fans are constantly up-voting all the old photos and newly added photos are never seen.

Here's proof people are just trolling the system, Some people told me oh they just don't like new pics uploaded, no. Anytime me or someone else uploads a new pic of Bey, Rih or Nicki they will get the same exact amouts of dislikes as they do likes. I caught it happen. I uploaded this pic of Beyonce today and within less thaat 5 mins I kept refreshing and it had new dislikes every second till it eventually stopped at the same amount of likes as dislikes and is still like that. Pls give us this option. We are stuck with these same pics for the artits for months!

Can we get an update on this topic? Five months ago, one user complained how one user called Bieber shit posted disgusting pictures of a popular teenage artist on the last.FM and adding them to their pictures gallery. https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/to... Nobody wants to see pornography or nasty pictures as the main pin-up image on his profile. I have no desire to have photography of an artist how he is spreading his anus or outdated photography on my profile thank you very much! That is why the Administration should modernize the gallery, build an anti-spam filter that will prevent this sort of behavior in the future and allow us to choose which photo we will pin-up on our profile.

They do need to modernise it, but this reply from Jon in another thread indicates that we'll all have to be a bit patient for the next few months:

...the data team are 100% committed to delivering a mission critical project right now (rebuilding the realtime scrobble storage service), to the exclusion of pretty much everything else.

We are still waiting for that to happen. (Sorry for the late reply, my inbox is a mess.)

Sigh, I have grown sick and tired of people (trolls) who go out of the way to make sure "their" chosen picture stays as the top of the profile. I'm not just talking about nsfw images, but generally just voting to change a picture to keep it lively only for the previous picture to reappear the next day. It's practically a fight when it comes to choosing images and I chose to not be part of it.

There really needs to be a reform. Otherwise this is why we can't have nice things.

I've noticed another curious and very suspicious trend with regards to artist images.

Usually it'll go hand-in-hand with it reaching main image status with almost no (if any) down votes, but I've noticed on more than one occasion that the image will have been uploaded by a user who has never listened to the artist concerned - not once. Also, their listening stats are often very...sparse - almost like it's not a proper account, hmmm...

I really feel this should be "planned" rather than merely "under consideration".

Aside from it being a subtle way to facilitate profile personalisation (an oft and long-lamented lost feature), but it would only benefit Last FM's more active and interactive users, which I would hope are of a higher priority.

Users who rarely actually visit the site could and would just have the default main image. Furthermore, it would hopefully stop people feeling the need to create fake accounts purely for the purpose of uploading and voting on images as they would be able to assign whatever image they wanted as the main, instead of trying to game the system to get their own image up top. I'm sure there will still be some who do this to get the default-main spot, seeing it as some kind of kudos, but I think adding this feature is more likely to make the experience far better for honest users.

If implemented, I would suggest there's an argument for expanding it to album covers, since occasionally problems occur there (e.g. Fifth Harmony's "Reflection" album keeps having the deluxe edition artwork voted up - the B&W version is correct, not the colour one) or there have been variations to the artwork because of region or media type (i.e. CD vs digital album artwork).

Examples off the top of my head: Aly & AJ's "Insomniatic", Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway", Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time", Ciara's "Fantasy Ride", Tina Arena's "Don't Ask", JoJo's self-titled album, Jennifer Paige's "Starflower", etc, etc. In all the cases I've listed, neither variation is actually wrong but users want to see the artwork they know and own; certainly I do. This would also help with albums and singles that have the same name, so people can choose which they want to have appear in their library.

Actually, the more I think about it and remember all these variations, the more I think this should definitely apply to album artwork, too!

This is exactly what I think! As a k-pop fan I'm constantly annoyed with people uploading and changing the different covers every album have.

This seems to be possibly the most requested feature/active topic, if it isn't being worked on already you guys at Last.fm really should start working on it already.

You'd have the option of viewing someone's profile without all the images slowing down your PC, and if you're brave enough to click the 'About Me' tab, you can read more about the user and all the .gif glory! I want this.
^I'm for this too, either "About me" tab or "show more" button to see the rest of it.

The "show more" option sounds good too. Do you think if we talk about it enough in every topic the developers will notice how much we want this feature? :P (I kid, they won't notice. :( )

>>>Think it would be a shame to restrict it to a subscriber-only benefit but I suppose it would be a shrewd business decision to encourage more subscriptions.

We have a small team, which means we have to carefully consider how time and resources are spent.  Everything we do has to have a clear business case associated with it, whether that's growing our overall audience, increasing subscriber base, increasing page views, etc. There are many things we want to do eventually, which we simply can't do right now.

This is this is a customisation / personalisation feature for registered users, so that immediately earmarks it as a potential subscriber benefit.  Yes, it would be really great to make it available to everyone, but there are costs associated with building the feature (time spent on this is always time that could be spent working on something else) and supporting it (we'd presumably need to increase our storage requirements per user, compared to what we're currently using).  Limiting to subscribers makes sense here, as it justifies the development cost, gives people another benefit to subscribing, and reduces the storage requirement to a smaller sub-set of registered users.  That doesn't necessarily mean we will make it subscriber only, but I think there's stronger case for building it if we do, and I'd rather see it as subscriber perk than not at all.

>>>>Does your comment mean it'll either appear as a subscriber benefit or not at all...or am I reading too much into your wording, Jon?

No, I'm just setting the expectation early that IF we did this, there's a (fairly strong) possibility that it would be a subscriber perk, so don't be surprised if that's what happens.  It might not though; I like the idea G.G.B. suggested with pins, and if we were to make it for everyone, perhaps we'd go down that route instead.

Ultimately it's not my decision and it's not set in stone either (in the end, we might not build this for whatever reason, most likely time/resources or technical limitations).  Though I will pass your feedback on to the product and development team to take into consideration.

The basic concept of pins or do you mean adding a vote-impacting effect, too?

The first I 100% agree with, the latter I'm dubious about the point or purpose of it - doubly so if resource usage is such an issue.

Official Response
Sorry, I realised there was no 'official' response to this.  To summarise my comments here and elsewhere in this thread, this feature has always been heavily requested by users and is very much under consideration by the product team for the future (i.e. when development resources are less strained than they are currently).  However, given that it's a profile customisation feature, it's quite likely that this feature would be offered as a subscriber perk, so please don't be surprised if that's what happens (more information about that here).

An idea for some problematic album pages is deleting wrong covers, leaving only the right option and closing the upload section. That would be nice, people would stop changing it constantly.
