Android app scrobbling patchy last 2 days

I scrobble very successfully from Google Play Music via the official Last.fm Android app. It seems very patchy the last 2 days - showing scrobbles correctly when playing, but then not successfully submitting them (they do not appear on my profile). Other times, song show on my profile but are then missing when I check back a little while later. For example - GPM shows I've played 9 songs in the past hour, but the Last.fm site shows only 4. It did show 6, but 2 have gone missing.

I have deleted and re-downloaded the app, and re-authorised it.

I've changed apps to Simply Scrobbler and it was initially very good. Everything scrobbled and registered all day yesterday. This morning, it's now back to being patchy. Songs initially showing up on the site, then disappearing. I've listened constantly for the past hour, but it shows about a 25 minute gap on the site with no scrobbles registered.

I'm playing music from Google Play Music v6.7, as well as Spotify v5.2. GPM was updated recently (about a week ago), but scrobbles appeared fine initially until 3 days ago.

I'm having the same issue with the last.fm Android app.  Scrobbles from Soundcloud are fine but from Google Play Music I get about one or potentially two tracks per album or per listening session.  During these listens I am also connecting to a Chromecast Audio to play through my receiver.

Watching more closely, my last.fm page will show a track is "scrobbling now" but once the next track is playing it doesn't remain on my list of recent tracks.  I previously disabled battery optimatization for the last.fm app but this doesn't appear to have made a difference.

I've just been watching my feed closely as well, and noted the same problem. Songs coming up as "Scrobbling now" appear, then disappear once the next song starts.

I don't believe this to be a scrobbling app or music player app problem - I've been able to replicate it using multiple scrobbling apps and multiple music player apps. It does not occur when scrobbling from Apple Music on an iOS device, nor the last.fm app on PC.

With regards to the official android app and GPM, I've been trying to narrow down an issue with scrobbling for months, and so far I'm the only person in the office that has encountered this which makes it hard to narrow down the root cause.  For me what usually happens is I'll scrobble an entire album, and notice on my profile later that 2-4 songs haven't scrobbled.  Quite frankly we're not sure if it's an issue with the app, an issue with the API (my initial guess), an issue with the device, an issue with GPM, or an issue with the network I'm using.

We have an internal build of the android app which includes logging (and therefore requires additional permissions) -- if you'd like to help, I'm going to try and make that available.

For now, what would help is:

- Device model
- Android version
- Your Last.fm app settings

e.g.

- Samsung Galaxy S6
- Android 6.0.1
- Spotify and Rdio off, other music apps on
- 'Wi-Fi Scrobble only' is on.
- Scrobble point is 50%

Also, if you can tell us the music you scrobbled, the tracks missing, and when this happened that would help too.

e.g. if you listened to an album, you can link to the exact point in your library where it happened:
http://www.last.fm/user/Maddieman/library/music/Bob+Dylan/Nashville+Skyline?from=2015-11-27&rang...

Thanks!

Not limited to Android. The exact same thing is happening to my scrobbles from Spotify via MacBook Pro running OS X El Capitan (10.11.4).There is obviously a system-wide problem that has nothing to do with our platforms. About to post new thread on this.

Thanks for the acknowledgement of the problem. My details:

- Samsung Galaxy S6
- Android 5.0
- Scrobbiling from GPM
- Spotify off, Rdio and Other Music Apps on
- 'Wi-Fi Scrobble Only' in off.
- Scrobble point is 50%

I'm scrobbling a random playlist, tracking missing according to my playlist this morning:

Mahgeetah, My Morning Jacket
Death's Song, City and Colour
Blind Spot, Paul Dempsey.

Where these songs should be is nothing. In between these songs are 2 songs by The National which successfully scrobbled. All of the missing songs correctly displayed as "Scrobbling now" but then either disappeared when the next song started, or when I refreshed the page.

zeldman you might be right, but at the same time the android app has known issues with scrobbling from GPM, so we can't conflate these two issues.  It might be one, or the other, or a combination of problems.

Thanks, would you be interested in trying a developer build of the app with debug logging?

Please see the official post I've just written.  It's the same as the regular app, but it creates a text file on your phone with debug logs  - error messages, scrobble status, etc.

I am using Simple Last.fm Scrobbler successfully since forever. In combination with Google Play Music, I occasionally have double scrobbles when I pause playback or when a playlist ends. To avoid messing up my statistics I check the list of scrobbles in the app, remove duplicates by hand and then manually send them to last.fm I haven't noticed any missing scrobbles yet.

Yes, this is known bug with the way Google Play Music reports track progress / events and SLS implements scrobbling.  The only workaround I know is to get into the habit of clearing your play queue before closing GPM.

The official Last.fm app gets around this issue by taking a completely different approach to scrobbling, but it has it's own caveats.

I was wondering about this. I am using the official Last.fm app on my phone and have the exact same issue (actually any time playback is disrupted; paused, notification, connectivity issue, etc). I am using the older version which maybe uses the same scrobbling protocol? I have the newer official app on my tablet and I don't seem to recall having this issue (haven't tried it with GPM though).

Yes, the olde Last.fm android app has the same issue with duplicate scrobbles in GPM.  If I remember correctly, in the settings you'll see a reference to SLS.

The new version was designed to address to this bug, but it does so in a way that means it can only scrobble from 'known' media players.

Problem still exists, and it appears to be getting worse. More reports on these pages seem to suggest it's wider spread?

Songs are now disappearing after initially seeming to scrobble fine. For example - I have had the past 3 tracks appear with "Scrobbling now" and then with a timecode after it when I refresh the page. Refreshing again has resulted in all 3 disappearing and just 1 song in the past 20 appearing, in addition to the current "Scrobbling now" track.

It appears to affect GPM, scrobbling through the official app. Spotify seems much more stable (although, curiously the official app is scrobbling from Spotify even with the option checked off. I have not connected by Spotify app with Last.fm).

Nope, spoke way too soon. 5 songs played through Spotify appeared as "scrobbling now", then correctly with a timecode after refreshing and a new song starting. Now 3 songs missing after appearing to successfully scrobble.

I have downloaded the Simple Scrobbler app again and I am experiencing the same problems playing from both GPM and Spotify.

To confirm - the app Status also notes that 9 "Now playing notifications" have been send, yet only 3 "Total tracks scrobbled".

- HTC 10
- Android 6.0.1
- Spotify and Rdio off, other music apps on
- 'Wi-Fi Scrobble only' is on.
- Scrobble point is 50%

It seems to me that scrobbling is patchy only when I'm not connected to a Wi-Fi.

Yes, confirm it's only patchy when not on WiFi. All settings the same, but scrobbling when on WiFi works perfectly. Scrobbling from Apple Music on PC on WiFi is unaffected. As is scrobbling from iPod touch using the official app on WiFi.

UPDATE
I just played Kygo's new album Cloud Nine while I wasn't on WiFi.  The album features 15 tracks, but tracks 1, 10, and 14 weren't scrobbled.

I use Simple Last.FM Scrobbler and works every single time on my Android phone. No issues. This is with default LG music player. To me is the best player compared to the full of ads players on Google Play or pay for an app to get the same as my default one that sounds awesome and looks awesome compared to many players on Google Play.

If you're encountering issues scrobbling consistently with the official Last.fm android app (version 2.+) and would like to help us troubleshoot the issue, we have a test build you can install which creates a debug log file.

Here's the download link.  It's the same as the regular app, but requires an additional permission to write a log file to your phone.  That being said, as this is an unofficial release, you agree to install at your own risk.

Steps to use it:
  1. You need to uninstall the previous version of your last.fm app;
  2. Install the linked app and authenticate with your Last.fm account.
  3. After installation on your SD card "lastfmLog.txt" file will be created (e.g. My Files -> Device Storage -> lastfmLog.txt)
  4. As soon as you'll notice that a track was not scrobbled, please copy the log file and send to us or paste it here.
  5.  Please also include your device model, android version, and app settings (see my previous post above)
Note: info in the log file is written for one day, on a new day the log starts from scratch.

In most cases we don't need the entire file, just the entries related to the missing scrobbles.

Have downloaded it, and using it. I've had no dropped scrobbles in the 6 hours I've been at work so far. Usually only 4/10 scrobbles in this time.

After 3 weeks of succesful scrobbling with the developer app, it seems to have gone down again. Only 3 songs succesfully scrobbled in the past hour, despite constant streaming. Text log shows the missing songs, but they are not scrobbled.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I was wondering if a solution to this had been found? I seem to find that locking my phone screen closes the last.fm notification (and ergo stops the app from scrobbling). I am using the Google Play Music app and running on Android 6.0.1

Saw your post over on the reddit thread. Mine's been very stable since then, but it can freeze if I lock my screen too quickly after starting to play a song. The only work around it to immediately skip to the next track prior to locking the screen.

I also found once I lock the phone, a pause/unpause from the lock screen works. Basically the act of locking the phone cancels the scrobbling.

We've haven't changed anything with the app on our side lately -- has your phone's software been updated recently?

If your device has a power saving mode, make sure this is off while scrobbling, as that will definitely cause problems.  Also check to see if your device has implemented some kind of app optimisation - you're using a Sony Xperia  Z3 right?  Check this, and make sure there's an exception for both Last.fm and Google Play Music:

I set both apps to be exceptions and am still experiencing the same behaviour. Pausing/unpausing from my headphones has no effect on scrobbling, locking and waking the screen are the only things that interrupt scrobbling.

Hmm, ok, have you tried adjusting your notification settings?

http://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/xperiaz3compact/userguide/Status-and-notifications/

I can see there's a setting for hiding sensitive content - perhaps it's mistakenly flagging either last.fm or GMP notifications as sensitive and hiding them (hiding either one would likely break scrobbling).  Also, it looks like you can adjust the priority of notifications for specific apps - I would try setting last.fm and gpm to 'treat as priority' and turn off 'hide sensitive content'.

I've disabled the "hide sensitive information" as well as allowing last.fm to "peak" and giving it notification priority. The notification reappears if I resume playing music from the lock screen. Waking the phone (still on lock screen) then closes the notification (I see the notification disappear).
