Add AI to the lamest algorithm in the world. Maybe you could sign a deal with Google or IBM who are very advanced in AI. But you have to do something: your algorithm is simply useless to find new neighbors. I'm a subscribers to lastfm and i sincerely wonder what are you doing with my money? :)

Yes, with your money the least they could've done is implement AI. You tell em.

I have plenty of neighbors who haven't been on this site for several weeks. I should have new neighbors, not old.

This is non-sense. Why should I set my preferred artists to 1 month or more if I want to have weekly neighbors? :D The fact is the algorithm sucks the hell! I can check an artist and see the listeners as "very good match with me". Why in this case this listener is not a neighbor? Who said lastfm is just a bunch of lazy wankers? :D

All that hard earned money you give and they still can't give you a good algorithm. It's your money and you're right to demand everything you want since you're paying for it.... the whole full couple of dollars....
You tell em good boy.

So ... if you are a subscriber, you think that a certain (better) list of neighbours would be a thing that needs to be offered for you ? :-) (note that I am a subscriber also !)
The list of neighbours is based on your listening habits ! (I'm not sure if it matters what timeline are those listening habits based: 7 days ? 30 days ? all time ? ) But the thing is that it's based on that listening habit. So ... what exactly do you want more from this algorithm ?
Your' not clear what exactly you do want ! How should it be made better ?
If you're set to have all tops (artists, tracks, albums) to "last 7 days" and you only listen to Rammstein for those whole 7 days .... what do you expect to have in your list of neighbours ?!?

And btw ... you really, honestly call Google bots a prove of AI ?!?!? Really ? Hmm.. Such a bad idea you have about what AI means (should mean) ...

P.S. Neighbours list is not made different according to the type of user: subscriber or not; so you can't have a somehow better neighbour list being a subscriber, than a "simple" user !
If they will implement a better neighbour algorithm, it will be for ALL users, not just for us, the subscribers !

I've just taken a look at my neighbors for the first time since, perhaps, the overall redesign of the site years ago. I find it rather confusing.

What exactly is this algorithm based off of?
My top neighbor and I, virtually, have a completely different taste in music... aside from a small handful of artists.

Assuming it's not so already (doesn't seem like it), why can't the algorithm be based on the genres listened to as it relates to a user's most played artists? It seems like the current algorithm is based solely on the user's most recent artists listened to, completely ignoring all other data.

Thanks for subscribing, however posting disparaging remarks towards staff is not a subscriber benefit and won't be tolerated.  Please read our community guidelines, if you have any doubts about what is and isn't allowed here.

To your point, you're right, we are aware that the neighbours algorithm sometimes produces unsatisfactory results and this is something we'd like to improve.  Comparing the full libraries of over 65 million registered users is a challenging task, and the series of heuristics we use are designed to break this problem down into something computationally feasible.  Simply put, we break down the pool of users from tens of millions to those most likely to have similar taste to you, and then compare those.  However, speed comes at the price of accuracy / relevance, and I agree there's some things we could fine tune to get a better balance.

As others have said, we also take your top artist setting into account when comparing with other users, and I believe this was based on the assumption that showing you neighbours related to what you've chosen to show on your profile will give you more relevant results.  This makes sense for people who have used the site for a long time and their taste in music has changed since when they first signed up, but I agree that it's counter-intuitive and not necessarily what everyone wants or expects.
