Artist Name : Feat. artist

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Features in album tracklists.

I know right now everyone is mad at the update for obvious reasons, but i also wanted to suggest something that has been in the website since forever and that i think it should be fixed: the album features. I feel like the feat. artist tag should be moved to the song name itself and not shown in the artist section, because it destroys the listeners stat as the mayority of the people do not scrobble like that (putting the feature in the artist tag). Thanks for reading and keep working to gives us back the original features.

Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: Artist and Label : Last.fm features disabled at launch - 12th August.

Hi Pietrus,

This is an issue that depends entirely on the artist and label creating the audio file and it also varies from territory to territory, even for the same recording.

It has to be solved by the last.fm community by submitting and voting artist and tracks catalogue corrections.

As far as I know, this feature will continue to exist on the current website.

Thank you Svilcans.

Unfortunately, that may work for MusicBrainz's architecture but not for last.fm's one.

There is also the argument that the guest artist features (semantically) on the track, not on the artist.

I am with Pietrus on this one, I am afraid.

What this actually boils down to though is Last FM needing the ability to filter minor variations of a track name into the same track identity.

e.g.

Rihanna - Umbrella
Rihanna feat. Jay-Z - Umbrella
Rihanna - Umbrella (feat. Jay-Z)
Rihanna featuring Jay-Z - Umbrella
Rihanna - Umbrella (featuring Jay-Z)

These are all the same track from a stats point of view; will there be the ability (or may I suggest Last FM looks into trying to do this) for all these scrobbled variations to be assigned to a single unique track ID?

Hi Elliot,

This has been the case since 2009 . Unfortunately, the catalogue corrections are currently "hard coded", so voting for the correct (or most popular) spelling is deactivated.

Thanks for replying although I'm slightly confused.

Are you saying that vote corrections aren't coming back? How will catalogue errors be dealt on the new site?

Is it possible to get an idea of how quickly/easily these corrections get implemented? Only, I make corrections on things and they never get enacted. I think, like we had the "incorrect capitilisation of songs" thread on the old forums, a similar one for these kinds of tracks would be helpful

Manual editing of the database is always the worst option, especially with lots of necessary changes. That is the reason why an automatic system was introduced years ago which wasn't perfect, but it worked at least for popular corrections with many user votes and  confirmed MusicBrainz entries.

As far as I remember, staff replies on the old forum were along the lines that this system needs an overhaul anyhow, so my guess is it will come back, but rather later than sooner. At least some preconditions are available now with the new database which could not be realised back then (one of the reasons for the site update), e.g. for album corrections which need artist disambiguation and release groups first like on MusicBrainz.
