Desktop Scrobbler seems to re-open iTunes

Title pretty much says it all, but I've noticed that iTunes will frequently re-open when I try to close it. It'll will throw up the warning dialog box about another application using the iTunes scripting interface, but while clicking on "quit" closes iTunes, it will almost always re-open a few seconds later. This will happen repeatedly.

If, however, I exit the scrobbler from the system tray and then close iTunes, I'll still get the warning but it will successfully close and stay closed.

If it helps, I'm using the latest versions of iTunes and Desktop Scrobbler on Windows 7.

This is a known issue with the newer windows desktop client (3.x) -- since the client is polling itunes for play state changes, it's possible that the desktop client polls itunes as it's shutting down, which causes itunes to relaunch.  That's a behaviour we can't override, and as far as I know, the only option is to poll less frequently, which can result in dropped scrobbles.

With that in mind, I recommend closing the scrobbler first.  Disabling scrobbling / itunes 'plugin' from the settings menu before closing either itunes or the desktop scrobbler would probably prevents this from happening also.

OK, thanks for the reply, Jon. Glad it's known about, at least.

This issue/post is 8 months old and it still seems to be happening. Can the last.fm team patch this? Please?

This might be a bit extreme a method, but if you open Windows Task Manager and then force close iTunes, does that keep it closed? It's probably slightly less hassle than always closing your scrobbler.

Yeah, I have occasionally had to resort to that. As you say, a little extreme. Hopefully it’ll eventually be fixed. I’m just happy for it to be a known issue and not particular to me.

Unfortunately, it seems like it'd be tricky to fix due to the way that the desktop client collects the scrobbles. It's basically routinely pinging iTunes for the now playing data, so unless the whole client was redesigned to do it another way or Apple change the software to not re-open (but I know it's been that way for years, I had issues when I used it with other software doing the same thing), I can't see an easy fix...

I don't recall having this issue with the previous version of the Windows Desktop Scrobbler.

It's a strange side-effect, for it to force a re-open. I wonder if it's caused by the scrobbler or if it's iTunes' reaction to a request from the scrobbler.

iTunes is famously trigger happy when it comes to opening, it'll do so if anything interacts with it, so I'd go with the latter. :)

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Issues with new Last.fm Desktop Scrobbler startup inconvenience.

Hi everyone, l'm writing because l'm having issues with the new Last.fm Desktop Scrobbler on starting up iTunes. Before l describe the issue, here is my information below:
- Windows 10
- Last.fm Desktop Scrobbler v3.1.28.1
- iTunes 12.7.5.9

Essentially, the problem l'm having with the new Desktop scrobbler is that it never starts up when l open iTunes anymore, l always have to do it manually, which is an inconvenience, but l can live with it.
The annoying thing about this is that when l go to try to close iTunes, a few seconds later, iTunes starts up again as if l started it! l can do this 4 more times for fun and the same result will happen each time. Once in a while, l get a message saying that there is a script preventing iTunes from closing, but it still persists and doesn't let iTunes close! The only remedy to this issue is to close Last.fm manually first, and than close iTunes.

l have no problems with scrobbling, and functionality still seems to work just fine, it's just these 2 issues that make it so much worse than the old one and l miss using it. l only updated because it doesn't work with the new iTunes versions anymore and l was forced to re-install (update) iTunes after some issues.

So there you have it, what can be done? Does anyone else experience this?
