This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies and is no longer visible to community members. The community moderator provided the following reason for archiving: Thanks for your feedback. This feature has been rolled out to all users now.

Hello subscribers,

Today we are launching some new functionality for the Last.fm shoutboxes. Now you can reply to a shout, and reply to a reply. Instead of a conversation being spread out over lots of individual shouts on different pages, they will all be in one place.

In addition to replies, you can show your appreciation of a particular shout or reply by voting it up. Also, if you see a shout that goes against our community guidelines, you can click on the three dots in the bottom right corner of the shout and select the “report” option.

Right now, this is a subscriber preview of the new shoutboxes, but we will release it to everyone soon. Currently viewing shouts by up votes or popularity is not an option but this will be introduced later.

If you’re a subscriber, check it out and let us know what you think. If you’d like to become a subscriber visit http://www.last.fm/subscribe for all the details.

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Good. This is very important. There's no point in replying to someone if they have no idea!

Also, I think some way to collapse replies in a similar way that YouTube handles them (e.g. "View all 10 replies") should be added so that they don't look so messy and take up a whole page.

Yes, there's a ticket for this.  Also, if you click on a shout's time & date, it will take you to its own page.

I'm not a subscriber, but based on James' screenshot the possibility to collapse long conversations may be extremely handy.

Will Groups return? That was my favourite aspect of last fm. Also I liked the customisation of the sidebar, which made your profile unique. Will these functions return? Thanks.

Nice, thanks for that!

Just a couple of questions:
  • Are there any notifications if someone replies to a shout or up-votes it?
  • How do replies for non-subscribers look like at the moment? Are they simply shown as regular comment?
Furthermore, it would be nice to have the possibility to downvote replies as well, don't you think?

...and last but not least: I see that it's not possible to see who liked a reply. Are there plans to add this?

I enjoyed the comments of James Joul and basically I agree with what he writes. last.fm is a site that we talk and listen to music, and for that the people who participate should strive to be a little more competent, putting aside the arrogance and presumption.

I want to write two messages that perhaps and I stress maybe,
reveal my character on a particular day like today.
I know that all this does not interest anyone anything,
but I want to write the same,
It will be for the music I'm listening to now.Hari Om ... ૐ

Awesome! Was kinda expecting the introduction of a shoutbox functionality to be be honest. Because for the last two days or so, I noticed that now if you can click a shout's timestamp it opens up a thread dedicated for that single shout.

Seems a bit useless. Replying to shouts is quite good (but people get used to answering in others' shoutboxes, so it's not worth that work now, but later) but votes? Is it Facebook? Who cares about votes, this site is for making new people and sharing / discovering music, guys!
I can't imagine the votes for friends' shouts, to be honest, and for shouts on events / sites: it's just not that important imo. Voting will be better when it will come to albums, but it can be also useless, as many people vote albums down just because of their close mind.

It wouldn't hurt Last.fm to get a bit more up to speed with "web 3.0", but at the same time I think there is enough about the site that sets it apart from so many other social media platforms.

That being said and maybe I'm just hopelessly sentimental, but I will miss brackets. Though I'm sure we'll find a way to keep them alive.

in Italy there is a saying (when playing for the national football team) that there are 64 million coaches, as many as are the inhabitants.
I have the impression that it is on these pages that in last.fm in general there are too many coaches. no offense to anyone. Hari Om ... ૐ

Tom ~ i sincerly wish that the gods of last.fm had been more intune to those questionairs that we all would fill out from time to time ~ ~ if so i believe that more of what you are posting would have been considered than this need to become another Twitter/Facebook wannabe site

and @iconan ~ unlike your national football team coach who, as you have pointed out, doesn't give a flip as to what the 64 million fans think, last.fm actually has been asking for our opinion (both before and after the BETA upgrade) so our voice has been asked for in order to express our opinion but what good is it when the powers that be cave in to "the popular kids" (aforementioned Twitter/Facebook)

New shoutboxes are also the first step to user groups, as staff had mentioned earlier in other threads.

Former long-time subscriber who will immediately subscribe once again when the more useful features are restored to something resembling their prior beauty.  Player, tagging, etc.

It's no surprise that my time spent at Last.fm has dropped significantly since that last major change.

Shoutbox use is a minimal feature (for me at least) and I can't fathom way I would need to up or down vote a comment.

I appreciate the efforts to improve and hope that more attention is being given to the features that made Last.fm what it was/is.

I'm totally against the report and downvoting options. Most likely they're just going to be abused by irritable users.

Reporting should always be possible as long as the staff handles the reports with care and with reason (individual investigation of the 'reported' shouts).
About the downvoting you're right. I'd rather not see this being introduced... or at least not now.

Honestly, I preferred the old way. This change means that all shouts (a conversation between two people) will be happening in the shoutbox of one of them, right? While the other person gets 'nothing'. This is okay for short conversations, where people would exchange a few shouts (or better call them comments from now on), but a lot of people have back and forth conversations that last for months/years, so I feel that this change isn't good for that.

However, I feel that this would be a great feature for artist/song/event/etc pages, just not for personal shoutboxes.

Possibly. I don't know about you, but I don't plan on changing how I interact with my friends through shouts. I still expect them to post on my profile, and I'll post on theirs - just like it's been for years. I don't think much will change in that regard. This just makes it easier to chat with people on artist/ album/ track/ events pages.

Yes, you're right, and I definitely don't intend to change that either. But when it comes to new shouts (like from people with whom we haven't talked before), it will be tricky to decide in whose shoutbox we're supposed to reply.

Remember the days before Facebook comment replies? Trying to piece together a conversation more than a few months old was virtually impossible - switching between profiles, scrolling to find the last chronological reply, etc.

If nothing else, it'll give conversations a bit more context and flow when you're looking back at them in the future.

Am I only who noticed that neighbors list has finally returned? Because it was about time to return that list. Well, the idea, to put all of our conversations that we had with each other under one roof is great. However, I do not like vote up, vote down option. The reason why: It is stupid because this is not Google+ this Last.FM Site. As of "Flagged as Spam" option, there will be plenty of trolls, butthurt and stupid kids who will flag our comments as spam for no reasons. If we say what we think about the band or a musician artist, they flag our comment as spam or even downvote it, just because they do not agree with our thoughts or our freedom of speech. If we swear, they will flag our comments as spam again. I find this option stupid because there are plenty of kids who will always find a stupid reason to abuse this feature. As of reply to one another without visiting pages of our followers, I am for it. However, vote up, vote down and flagged as spam, no, I am against it. Because as I said, there will be plenty of rabid fans, trolls, butthurt, and stupid kids who will abuse this feature for stupid reasons.

You need much to bring back the most played songs of artists in their pages in the last 7 days, 30 days ... etc .. would be a good idea to also have the TOP OF LAST FM , with all the songs / ALBUMS / ARTISTS most played the last 7 days, etc . with the number of executions

Hola! Hi! I am glad you have returned the option of neighbors because it is an opportunity to meet and share new music...about the option of the vote I think it will be very useful because Last FM is further from Facebook, Twitter or You Tube ?_?  ...maybe a "highlight" a way of star can shine but that does not reflect the amount or number of votes. I mean if you feel great a message or idea is a private vote and the star will be seen in case other users have agreed that it should be noted, just say...
I hope to return groups *-*  is what is lacking in the Last FM and review the application of scrooblr for mobile is forgotten =( ...a good day!

At first glance it looks a little bit strange to reply on your own site. Maybe it's a question of habituation. We will explore the potential off this feature in the near future.

Might be worth considering giving extra weight to active users over non-active in the list. Just checking my neighbours, 7 of the top 10 suggestions haven't scrobbled since 2015.

That's all nice and cute, but are you planning to bring back user tag list, ability to fill profile with links and images, listen to one's library radio? So many devoted users are longing for that.

Well, to be in your line of shortness, ... It is working :-)
I just tried to see if "play your library" or "play your mix" or "play your recommendations" work for me, and all worked OK.

So, what exactly did you tried, and what did not worked for you ?

But there was never a shout history to begin with. Unless you count the recent activity widget, but even there you could only see the last ten 'activities'.

Is there any particular reason as to why the text box for writing shouts is so incredibly tiny? It makes re-reading/ proof reading/ editing your shout needlessly difficult, especially if it's a longer message.
