Today we are launching some new functionality for the Last.fm shoutboxes. Now you can reply to a shout, and reply to a reply. Instead of a conversation being spread out over lots of individual shouts on different pages, they will all be in one place.
In addition to replies, you can show your appreciation of a particular shout or reply by voting it up. Also, if you see a shout that goes against our community guidelines, you can click on the three dots in the bottom right corner of the shout and select the “report” option.
Right now, this is a subscriber preview of the new shoutboxes, but we will release it to everyone soon. Currently viewing shouts by up votes or popularity is not an option but this will be introduced later.

Will Groups return? That was my favourite aspect of last fm. Also I liked the customisation of the sidebar, which made your profile unique. Will these functions return? Thanks.
I also very much miss customizing the sidebar with some of my original poems and hope that function returns soon; thank you.

As for downvoting -- this is a huge change to the way shoutboxes work, conceptually, and more is planned for later. For now, I believe we're going to wait and see how people use these new features before we start refining them or adding additional functionality.

IMO downvoting is a dangerous feature to implement given that the trolls population in LFM is quite massive and on the rise constantly. I can imagine seeing a barrage of downvotes flying left and right if this was considered. Trolls are the reason why we can't have nice things...

EtherealMurmur, gaming the system is a genuine concern (this already happens with images), and without an effective reputation system in place, you're right it would probably cause more overhead than it's worth.

I agree with what Jon said here. Downvoting a comment should not exist. This is last.FM, not a damn Facebook or Google+ where we will "like" posts of our friends. Voting a comment up is stupid as well, not to mention a ridiculous idea of who vote your comment up and who vote your comment down. What are you trying to make of this place, Facebook? Go there since you like to see who “like” your post and who “dislike” it. This a website for streaming free music online, not a social media site to share your family photos. Therefore, I agree with what Jon said here, an option like these should not exist. Period.

This a website for streaming free music online, not a social media site...And yet many people on here have been clamouring since this time last year about the importance - above all other features - of the more social aspects of Last FM, like Neighbours and Groups.
One could argue that the popularity of these features has lead to Last FM trying to emulate other social media platforms...

Last.fm has long been considered a social media site for music enthusiasts. Randomly, even Wikipedia lists it on it's "list of social networks" page.
Great thing about last.fm is unlike Facebook, Twitter, etc, you can get a lot out of the site without using the social features. So technically, you're both right - it both is and isn't a social site, depending on how you use it :-)

It's interesting how Last FM almost has two distinct user bases. I personally couldn't give a toss about neighbours, groups, etc. I don't really view the site as a socialising space so I personally found it frustrating when this beta went live and so many people on here were bleeting about the social or superficial aspects as being "the most important thing that needs bringing back first!" - I've always been of the mind that it's the functionality that's most important but whevs.
I'm glad that the catalogue is coming along and hopefully should be ready for all soon. Even if it is a year since this site went live.

Personally, I like the social aspects of Last.fm. I've discovered a lot my favourite artists through recommendations by friends. I enjoy talking with people about music and regularly share my discoveries.

I actually totally agree that its problem is in it trying to be all things to all people.

I will go with what James Joul said here when it comes to groups, neighbors, events and tagging list. Last.FM is built to listen to free music online, see the best recommendations from others, talk with people, and see that your friends are listening too. Including the groups where you could find all the best musician artists of any rather gender you like. I think that Last.FM should stay as a half social media site half-music website for streaming free music. Because leading battles with mega companies like Google+, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter is quite pointless. Those multi-billionaire companies can waste 100 of millions of dollars on brand new updates; shoutboxes, profile customizations and more. Last.FM does not have that money to waste on those expensive things. Therefore, leading battles against these gigantic companies, which I named above, is quite pointless, not to mention that Last.FM is putting himself on a risk to go bankrupt. That is just my view, who else think different, it's his choice, not mine. However, I believe that Last.FM should focus on fixing these problems that we have right now, instead of focusing something which it will cost them a whole fortune and lead them to the edge of bankrupt.
Last.fm is a music site, but fanfiction sites, book reader sites, movie lists sites, all, are a social media at the same time, the modernity is that. If you have a website, you have to do a app for phone. If you dont, you wont be succed. Thats the true.
I enjoyed the comments of James Joul and basically I agree with what he writes. last.fm is a site that we talk and listen to music, and for that the people who participate should strive to be a little more competent, putting aside the arrogance and presumption.

Seems a bit useless. Replying to shouts is quite good (but people get used to answering in others' shoutboxes, so it's not worth that work now, but later) but votes? Is it Facebook? Who cares about votes, this site is for making new people and sharing / discovering music, guys!
I can't imagine the votes for friends' shouts, to be honest, and for shouts on events / sites: it's just not that important imo. Voting will be better when it will come to albums, but it can be also useless, as many people vote albums down just because of their close mind.

I think the voting feature is not too shabby considering that we haven't gotten anything new since the beta catalogue was made public. At least users won't have to quote another person's shout which they like; "Come to Brasil!!" [7] Makes us seem like parrots...gonna miss being an occasional parrot though.

Fwiw, I really wanted the counter next to the thumbs up to be enclosed in square brackets, but I couldn't convince the web team to change it.
I quite like that idea. Shame it didn't happen.
Good idea =D ... the brackets is part of the history of Last Fm and perhaps would be a point to distinguish themselves from other social networks.
I said an "outstanding" or star icon or also the brackets as they say...well if reflect this has the greatest number of votes but almost all comments with votes is not too repetitive or spam almost look so he thought of a "private" vote and only the most votes is the star or clasp earn as "outstanding"

I understand the point of likes, of course, but it's something like "followers" - it takes away some magic from Last.fm. So something on which only long-term users cares. By the way, about this brackets - even if they make spam (especially on pop-music sites, when listeners are mob), they are something really enjoyable, when likes are not. Thumbs don't satisfy me when "[x]" with quote make me feel much better - I still remember when someone who I adore for his taste made this on my words. :')

It wouldn't hurt Last.fm to get a bit more up to speed with "web 3.0", but at the same time I think there is enough about the site that sets it apart from so many other social media platforms.
That being said and maybe I'm just hopelessly sentimental, but I will miss brackets. Though I'm sure we'll find a way to keep them alive.

New shoutboxes are also the first step to user groups, as staff had mentioned earlier in other threads.
I'm totally against the report and downvoting options. Most likely they're just going to be abused by irritable users.
Reporting should always be possible as long as the staff handles the reports with care and with reason (individual investigation of the 'reported' shouts).

I agree. It was just one of my first thoughts when I saw the upvote button - probably just because one is so used to have both today.
Honestly, I preferred the old way. This change means that all shouts (a conversation between two people) will be happening in the shoutbox of one of them, right? While the other person gets 'nothing'. This is okay for short conversations, where people would exchange a few shouts (or better call them comments from now on), but a lot of people have back and forth conversations that last for months/years, so I feel that this change isn't good for that.
However, I feel that this would be a great feature for artist/song/event/etc pages, just not for personal shoutboxes.

Possibly. I don't know about you, but I don't plan on changing how I interact with my friends through shouts. I still expect them to post on my profile, and I'll post on theirs - just like it's been for years. I don't think much will change in that regard. This just makes it easier to chat with people on artist/ album/ track/ events pages.
Yes, you're right, and I definitely don't intend to change that either. But when it comes to new shouts (like from people with whom we haven't talked before), it will be tricky to decide in whose shoutbox we're supposed to reply.
Remember the days before Facebook comment replies? Trying to piece together a conversation more than a few months old was virtually impossible - switching between profiles, scrolling to find the last chronological reply, etc.
If nothing else, it'll give conversations a bit more context and flow when you're looking back at them in the future.

This shoutbox update makes sense. Always tripped me out to see people reply to shouts in their own shoutbox. Looking forward to testing it out myself eventually.
At first glance it looks a little bit strange to reply on your own site. Maybe it's a question of habituation. We will explore the potential off this feature in the near future.
That's all nice and cute, but are you planning to bring back user tag list, ability to fill profile with links and images, listen to one's library radio? So many devoted users are longing for that.

What's the point of this when I still can't see my damn shout history? Am I supposed to keep a notepad file with links to the pages I've posted shouts on?
Is there any particular reason as to why the text box for writing shouts is so incredibly tiny? It makes re-reading/ proof reading/ editing your shout needlessly difficult, especially if it's a longer message.

FWIW, you can expand the box by dragging the little diagonal lines in the bottom right
Great, thanks! There's not even a prompt or highlighted change (as with the scroll arrows) when you mouse-over it. I always thought it was part of the design! Ha.

Yeah, it's built into the browser afaik. Pretty sure it first appeared on Chrome ages ago, then Firefox ripped it off because - well, a good idea is a good idea :-D

Also, I think some way to collapse replies in a similar way that YouTube handles them (e.g. "View all 10 replies") should be added so that they don't look so messy and take up a whole page.
