This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies and is no longer visible to community members. The community moderator provided the following reason for archiving: Thanks for your feedback. This feature has been rolled out to all users now.
Today we are launching some new functionality for the Last.fm shoutboxes. Now you can reply to a shout, and reply to a reply. Instead of a conversation being spread out over lots of individual shouts on different pages, they will all be in one place.
In addition to replies, you can show your appreciation of a particular shout or reply by voting it up. Also, if you see a shout that goes against our community guidelines, you can click on the three dots in the bottom right corner of the shout and select the “report” option.
Right now, this is a subscriber preview of the new shoutboxes, but we will release it to everyone soon. Currently viewing shouts by up votes or popularity is not an option but this will be introduced later.
If you’re a subscriber, check it out and let us know what you think. If you’d like to become a subscriber visit http://www.last.fm/subscribe for all the details.
Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Just a couple of questions:
- Are there any notifications if someone replies to a shout or up-votes it?
- How do replies for non-subscribers look like at the moment? Are they simply shown as regular comment?
...and last but not least: I see that it's not possible to see who liked a reply. Are there plans to add this?

- Non-subscribers can see the new features, but can't use them yet - (I think that's right - James?)
As for downvoting -- this is a huge change to the way shoutboxes work, conceptually, and more is planned for later. For now, I believe we're going to wait and see how people use these new features before we start refining them or adding additional functionality.

This a website for streaming free music online, not a social media site...And yet many people on here have been clamouring since this time last year about the importance - above all other features - of the more social aspects of Last FM, like Neighbours and Groups.
One could argue that the popularity of these features has lead to Last FM trying to emulate other social media platforms...

No, Last.FM is NOT a social media site. Social media sites are Google+, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Learn the difference between music site and social media site. Just because it has groups and neighbors, that does not mean it is 100% social media site. I have my rights to share my two cents here. If you do not like what I stated, it is not my problem. If you decided to pop up out of nowhere and be a

Great thing about last.fm is unlike Facebook, Twitter, etc, you can get a lot out of the site without using the social features. So technically, you're both right - it both is and isn't a social site, depending on how you use it :-)

I'm glad that the catalogue is coming along and hopefully should be ready for all soon. Even if it is a year since this site went live.

I think the problem with Last.fm is that it tries to be so many things at the same time, and as a result ends up falling short on all of them. I love this site, but because it tries to be so many different things, none of the users get 'the best' experience from their time spent here.
It's not great for those looking to store and review their entire musical collection due to catalogue inaccuracies and a clunky library system. Talking with friends is difficult and slow without quick messaging functionality (instant messaging) or even the most basic feature; email notifications. Recommendations are also fundamentally broken, usually recommending artists I've already listened to without any way to dismiss them and only displaying a few results. Tags are unreliable as they're created by the userbase and artist pages are shared. You can stream music from the site, but this can only be done through YouTube and Spotify. The list goes on.
The amount of things left to implement and develop is monumental.

I can't imagine the votes for friends' shouts, to be honest, and for shouts on events / sites: it's just not that important imo. Voting will be better when it will come to albums, but it can be also useless, as many people vote albums down just because of their close mind.

I said an "outstanding" or star icon or also the brackets as they say...well if reflect this has the greatest number of votes but almost all comments with votes is not too repetitive or spam almost look so he thought of a "private" vote and only the most votes is the star or clasp earn as "outstanding"

Is it Facebook? Who cares about votesAnd yet, amusingly, it seems certain people do care about votes on here. Pretty sure someone (or possibly a couple of people) has created multiple profiles on here to upvote their own comments, as if that gives them more status. Every comment these profiles make are always "liked" by the same clique of users; I can't be the only one who has noticed this...
Having said that, I generally agree with your point. Although, if it helps clean up Shoutboxes on artist pages, like EtherealMurmur points out (Come to Brazil! [43]), then that's no bad thing.

Of course, still, it depends on scene we are saying - Melanie Martinez is, for example, spammed like hell (as many pop and rock sites), but in industrial, gothic or metal music these "Come To Brazil [43]" is much more rarely.
Anyway, the point, besides magic, is that sometimes people give addition to this brackets - for example "Magic song [2] Guitar solo is perfect". So I can imagine they should give "like" instead and write only his own sentence? Or make this "spam" with his thoughts additionally? I would prefer the second option to be honest.
So, yes, I also think it's good idea. But I wonder if it's important for now, when many things are missing. (my eternal argument against some changes :P)

That being said and maybe I'm just hopelessly sentimental, but I will miss brackets. Though I'm sure we'll find a way to keep them alive.

and @iconan ~ unlike your national football team coach who, as you have pointed out, doesn't give a flip as to what the 64 million fans think, last.fm actually has been asking for our opinion (both before and after the BETA upgrade) so our voice has been asked for in order to express our opinion but what good is it when the powers that be cave in to "the popular kids" (aforementioned Twitter/Facebook)

It's no surprise that my time spent at Last.fm has dropped significantly since that last major change.
Shoutbox use is a minimal feature (for me at least) and I can't fathom way I would need to up or down vote a comment.
I appreciate the efforts to improve and hope that more attention is being given to the features that made Last.fm what it was/is.

About the downvoting you're right. I'd rather not see this being introduced... or at least not now.

However, I feel that this would be a great feature for artist/song/event/etc pages, just not for personal shoutboxes.

I just tried to see if "play your library" or "play your mix" or "play your recommendations" work for me, and all worked OK.
So, what exactly did you tried, and what did not worked for you ?

Also, I think some way to collapse replies in a similar way that YouTube handles them (e.g. "View all 10 replies") should be added so that they don't look so messy and take up a whole page.
