Today we are launching some new functionality for the Last.fm shoutboxes. Now you can reply to a shout, and reply to a reply. Instead of a conversation being spread out over lots of individual shouts on different pages, they will all be in one place.
In addition to replies, you can show your appreciation of a particular shout or reply by voting it up. Also, if you see a shout that goes against our community guidelines, you can click on the three dots in the bottom right corner of the shout and select the “report” option.
Right now, this is a subscriber preview of the new shoutboxes, but we will release it to everyone soon. Currently viewing shouts by up votes or popularity is not an option but this will be introduced later.

I could care less about who agrees with what opinions about music. I can only imagine that a vote system will cause circlejerk quality comments to be at the top. Music is on of the most circlejerk prone subjects to begin with.

Comments/shouts ARE sorted by new (the newest is above the others ).
It was always like that, and I don't think you could sort them otherwise.

You'll be able to sort it by both recently popular and newest first.
There's tons of other serious issues and you waste time on implementing features that nobody asked for? Kudos to you, guys.
As Hans-Jürgen mentioned earlier in this thread, improving shout functionality is also the first step towards creating user groups (as the staff had mentioned earlier in previous threads). And seeing the return of groups has been very highly requested.
IIRC, pretty much everything they've been doing has been to lay the groundwork for other things. You can't erect a building without first laying the foundation.

In what way is "improved shout functionality" necessary for the return of groups? You know that's just disingenuous, James and Gary; the ability to vote and blah blah shoutboxes are not a necessity for the return of groups, regardless of what Hans-Jurgen says. Just because something is stated does not make it valid. You can have the shoutboxes with groups, period. They just have overly loft plans with no foundations and no need for the plans lol

Re-use of code. Forums are just a series of posts and replies and the old shoutbox system didn't let you reply, so it sorta makes sense
@Chris, precisely what I was going to say in response. ;) I imagine they'll set up shoutboxes with this code as a way to root out bugs through use, then build groups around that same code.
When will groups and normal About me come back? I want to update my profile with images, links and other things again. When will you do something useful? Because for now you're doing what's not needed. Move and do something useful at least. Lastfm now looks like a pile of crap and you're afraid to admit it. You removed everything people loved and for what? Just to piss us off. So move and give these options back. It makes me disgusted how Lastfm works and looks now.

I agree, the new last came with almost all tools unable. The website should have been updated with all tools, or would not be updated.

Yes I'm in this collection. And the tool to edit tracklist came back, but i think this is only for premiuns...=/ this sucks

Please bring back journals, they were the best bit of last.fm. I loved falling through an abyss of links from one journal to the next, reading all sorts of deep musical thoughts.

Apparently it's nessessary that we should be more concentrated on a friendly speach without words like clowns, gibberish or whatever. (I'm not perfect too, I know.) Seems to be not easy in internet communication always to realise that "the others are human too". So stay cool and polite amigos!

I felt that some groups had such intense activity that even general social sites like Facebook would envy them :-))

True, there were a lot of dead groups but that's because there were a lot of groups in general (many of them created as a joke). Of the groups which were active, these were very important social gathering places. I was a member of two groups in particular (co-admin of one) which were very active and the loss of access to these groups was quite a blow.
Also, while I usually didn't participate in them there were a number of groups running on-going game series' and these folks were pretty much just set adrift.
So I feel that the return of groups is very important to the Last.fm community.

it's all true dear Cornel Diaconu, I personally was a member of several musical groups and I enjoyed a lot to communicate with other users.
In this regard there is someone kind enough to tell me what happened to the music articles written by us users of last.fm?

@iconan ... for the moment, articles are very likely still stored on the old server(s); the same as groups themselves, or journals for that matter.
Only we don't quite have access to them in an easy way (you just have to had saved somewhere the old URLs, as I kept them for groups like those 2 above). I'm sure that if you by chance have such a link somewhere in your emails (maybe you recommended such an article to some friend ?), you still can reach and read those articles even now.

I think the problem with images (not being available) is due to
Imageshack site (seems all those images in the journals were uploaded to
Imageshack, right ?)
As I understand now, Imageshack is no longer available for free, you only have to be a paying customer in order to upload your image files to their servers.
If you uploaded those files as an anonymous user (I remember this could be done, at some point), you didn't even got the chance to be notified about their change in policy; unfortunate situation you had. Very likely that those files got deleted by now.

If I understand correct, you don't have "Like" button/link under your own messages (posts) here, on these forums, right ?
I believe it is rather normal (it wouldn't be normal to vote/like your own reply/message, isn't it ?)
If, on the other hand, you are referring to last.fm site, and that you don't see the "vote up" icon (or, let's call this button as "Like") - I think that for the moment it is available only for subscribers -- I hope I did not misunderstood this from some other forum.

Any idea about editing posts? I think it's much more important than this.
Ah, yes... Editing shouts (and posts in groups, when they will come back) is something I always wanted, too.
As for shouts, the only way to "edit" them now, is to delete it, and than repost it, with the desired modifications.

Again, I think this falls under my previous answer to Jasmin. We want to facilitate music discussion on Last.fm, being able to write and edit longer posts makes sense. However, a potential concern is people abusing it by posting something offensive and then editing it before the mods show up -- I expect we'll want to address that issue before we allow shoutbox edits.

Personally, why don't we just have shouts the way they were, people will get offended now and then regardless. This voting system seems so grade school, but that is just my opinion.
It's not really any different from liking comments on GetSatisfaction. You're basically just upvoting it.

hey lastfm. I would like to ask for the option of seeing if my followed listen to a band or not and seeing the scrobbles from an artist that my friends have. Is it possible again? Sorry for my English
I know, this is the website support. Also I'm not totally sure whether it works correctly, but with the last.fm app for iOs (not to confound with the scrobbler app) you still can see, what your friends currently listening to.

please make it so this feature is on artist/album/song pages etc. but not on profiles, it takes away the way people shout on eachother's profile which I think was one of the best things about the social aspect of last.fm

There's nothing stopping people from shouting on each other's profile if they prefer.
Hmm .. how exactly does this function of Reply work ?

that's how it works. if you reply to a comment left by someone on your profile, your reply will also show on your profile only.
Uh, that is the whole point. Like they said up there: "Instead of a conversation being spread out over lots of individual shouts on different pages, they will all be in one place". Not that I really like it, but it is how it is.

Notifications about shoutbox replies will come later, so both will know that there is an answer and where it is.

Yes, but this whole function makes not much sense without the notification.
But when the work will be finished (this includes notifications and bbc), the shoutboxes will work much better than with (or under(?)) the old last fm.

Replies are displayed under the comment you're replying to, just like here in GetSat, and many other websites. You can have up to 3 levels of nested shouts (root, reply, reply to a reply).
Lastly, if you click on the timestamp, you can view the discussion in isolation and link to individual replies.

I don't think giving users the ability to upvote their own shouts is such a good idea...especially when there is no way to know for sure who upvoted what. This grants people the freedom to get away with self-admiration, especially a certain clique that exists on this very forum...

In a future update we should be making a change so that users on your ignore list are not displayed in shoutboxes. People who shamelessly promote themselves will run a higher risk of being permanently ignored.
Something I was thinking about this morning; with the old Last.fm some BBCode would work in shoutboxes if you knew the code (and it forced you to learn, which I thought was good). Once BBCode is re-enabled site-wide, has there been some thought put into having a sort of optional pop-out WYSIWYG editor for shoutboxes?

Something along those lines is planned as a possible extension, if usage justifies it.
What about notifications? I do not understand why they haven't built that function yet. If we can be informed about new messages, then we should be notified about new judgments that we received on our page.
Gotta agree on that one. It's ridiculous to have messages, shouts and now even likes and option to reply to a shout, but no notifications.

@Chris: Everyone here has read the famous "the shout notification system is currently in development", or some variation of that at least 19384 times since August last year, so that is not the answer we are looking for.
I feel like it used to be "on the list" so "in development" sounds like progress to me ;-)
