I don't like the background image on my profile page. It's currently from an artist page which shares the same name with other groups, so my profile has a photo of a band which I NEVER LISTENED, and they look like some 80's hairmetal band (while the band what I did listen was a progressive rock group from 70's). So... Really, how to change that image? Any way to do so, or is it always automatic & random by the Last.fm system ???

The header image is determined by what your top track is on your profile page.  To change it, change the default timeframe for your Top Tracks.  A shorter time range (e.g. 7 days) will probably give you a more frequent artist rotation, whereas 'All Time' will only change if your overall top track does.

Are there any plans to improve the header in the near future? It still looks terrible. A good idea, poorly executed.

I've been using custom images for the past 5 months or so thanks to alin1's Userstyle skin, swapping different ones out every few days. I'd love to see my artists instead, but a zoomed-in view of someone's forehead... Not so much.

100% in agreement with the "good idea, poorly executed" sentiment. In principle, it's good, but it just doesn't work. The image should be something more abstract, like James' spacey one, or even like a grid of artist/album images, etc.

I, too, hope the header images will be looked at again.

I've played around with loads of different images. Ambient and abstract ones work well. You can even use GIFs with that skin! Though finding one that's roughly 2000 pixels wide isn't so easy.

Spotify handles their headers relatively well as they use a better aspect ratio for displaying artist images. Last.fm would have to redesign and rearrange the whole header for it to work. I've also proposed previously that the header be made up of a collage of album art too. I think just a selection of default images to choose from would be a good idea (at least until there's a better solution). Maybe even give people more of a reason to subscribe with extra header backgrounds to choose from - or better yet let them upload their own for everyone to see.

I'm surprised it hasn't been improved yet. I think it ruins the design of the new site.
