improvements on pictures

So I think everybody is really in need of some improvements on the picture system. I was thinking about some changes and new features that could really be helpful and would improve the site!

- First of all, we all should be able to pin our own pictures. like in this conversation is proposed https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/topics/an-option-to-choose-which-artist-photo-will-display-on-our.... There is just no reason to hold this back. Also in this conversation: It is importent that a 'pin' would count as a vote as well because otherwise, people who haven't pinned a picture jet would be stuck with the troll pictures.
- The voting system should stay, so people who don't want to pin a picture can still have nice pictures. The site should make it visible who voted for each picture (+ and -) so it would be easier to spot troll accounts.

- When you upload a picture, you should be able to frame the picture so you can make sure that the picture looks nice if it is used as the top picture of an artist. Like you can choose your profile picture on Facebook.

- There are 4 ways a picture can be displayed on the site. Just the circle, a square on your profile page in the image grid, the header of the artist page/profile page and just the picture in the picture gallery. I think it's normal that not every picture is made to be in a small square or a circle, so there should be a preview of the 3 display modes on every picture page, so when you vote for a picture, you can see if it would fit in the box. Maybe it would be interesting to make a separate voting for each display mode.

So what do you guys think of this possible improvements?
sorry for the bad english :)

All in all good suggestions.
The site should make it visible who voted for each picture (+ and -) so it would be easier to spot troll accounts.
This could work but you have to keep in mind that it also reduces privacy and people will rather vote for something that they think is socially acceptable than something they really like.

But if you think something is not socially acceptable, is last.fm the place to be than? This is a social site, so I think it is important that the things happening on this site are socially acceptable. Or am I seeing this wrong?

You're right, the public content should be socially acceptable, which could mean something different for every person and also depends on your cultural environment and education of course.
What I meant was: The behaviour of a person can change, if he knows that it will be visible to other persons and potentially be judged by them. Public votes will be influenced by the thought of social acceptance. This is not necessarily a bad thing, because it could help to keep the site safe for work. It just will be a different result if people vote in secret and without the possible unconscious fear of being judged.

So I'm not arguing against public votes on pictures in general, in fact I have suggested to make the changelog of videos public to find the users who are abusing the system to promote their cover songs on the official track page. I'm very much for privacy, but if it's used to destroy the functionality of the site, something must be done.

I get your point about privacy and stuff, but just not really for this issue. I can't imagine a situation where you vote on a picture of an artist you listen to (because I don't think there are a lot of people voting on pictures of artists they don't listen to other than the troll accounts), and you will be judged because of the picture you liked.

As I said, I think in this case it is no argument against public votes on pictures.
But imagine you would like to measure the preferences of people as exact as possible. You would want to remove any factors that could possibly contaminate the results. The awareness of being watched is one of these factors that can change the liking behaviour. Therefore anonymous votes can give clearer data about true personal preferences. If you make the names of voters visible, it will just show the preferences in a filtered form (e.g. what you think your family can endure to see). It's mostly an unconcious thought process and this extends to the scrobbling as well, you wouldn't want to scrobble stuff publicly that can damage your reputation or gets you in trouble with the law.

This is such a good idea!!! The mains of artists (Rihanna,Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and a few others ) are being trolled, someone or multiple people have a bunch of accounts and they keep the oldest ugliest pics as main, it's been like that a few months now! Any new good picture that gets main will have about 20 down votes within an hour and then the old pic is back. It's ridiculous. We have so many good new pics we upload and none of them are main. Picking our main would be the best! I also like the idea of seeing who voted for what that way we can weed out all the troll accounts and delete them!

I like this idea. Sometimes you upload a really great photo for an artist but it gets poorly cropped as a Library image. It would be useful if you could edit the thumbnail to specify where on the image it should focus - same with if it's a banner-compatible image.
The voting system should stay, so people who don't want to pin a picture can still have nice pictures. The site should make it visible who voted for each picture (+ and -) so it would be easier to spot troll accounts.

While I admire the reason for suggesting this, this seems unfeasible. More popular artists have images with 1,000s of votes; having a list of this many names isn't useful or interesting to end users, I would argue. I think the best way to get around the trolling and (TERRIBLY INEFFECTIVE) voting system is to allow users to pin their own choice for main images. Aside from allowing an element of customisation, it negates the effect of trolling since users who only use Last FM remotely (i.e. don't visit it to vote, upload and post) won't be aware of what the top image is, and those that DO care can pin their choice, circumventing the trolling. In summation: why haven't we got this ability already?? lol

Perhaps the voting system could be amended to have a time based weighting, kinda like the top listeners does. I haven't thought through all the logistics of it but would slow the troll voting surely
