iTunes 12.7 - not scrobbling [Windows]

I just downloaded the latest version of iTunes (12.7) and it does not appear to scrobble my tracks. It does not even open the scrobbler when I close and reopen iTunes. I have re-downloaded the iTunes plug in, then uninstalled and re-downloaded the scrobbler. Neither has worked. Is there a way to fix this? I am on a Windows 10 computer also.

The mods / admins should contact Apple to fasten up the process. Otherwise it will take weeks, that's what I think.

It looks like Apple Company didn't fix this malfunction since 2014. https://www.last.fm/forum/34905/_/226...
https://www.last.fm/forum/34905/_/223...
https://www.reddit.com/r/lastfm/comme...

By the way, try this: go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Last.fm\plug-ins" and execute manually the installer "iTunesPluginWinSetup_6.0.5.5.exe".

The action creates a copy of "itw_scrobbler.dll" into "C:\Program Files\iTunes\Plug-Ins" folder.

I found this comment on an old thread accidentally. I don't know does this method still working.

Doesn't work.. And it's not in the hands of Apple. Why should a software company accomplish its directions for a desktop scrobbler? In fact quite the reverse is true.

To people putting the blame on Apple, it isn't their responsibility to ensure iTunes compatibility with Last.fm, its Last.fm's responsibility to ensure comparability with iTunes.

There's nothing wrong with iTunes, it's all on the side of Last.fm.They should've updated their desktop scrobbler ages ago.

No, youre wrong. iTunes broke it's compatibility with 3rd party apps. they broke their own api, which last.fm sits on top. granted, the desktop app needs some updates, but this recent thing is an iTunes mistake.

No you're wrong, no you're wrong... They're not obliged to keep up w/ 'em. Next, it's not broken, there are ways to circumvent it.
Only thing not working is the scrobbler.

no youre wrong. not only the scrobbler doesnt work. thats what I said. the com component is broken too (basic library to talk to itunes). connecting doesnt work. sure they are not obliged. but it would be nice to communicate things like this to developers first, eh?

>>> it isn't their responsibility to ensure iTunes compatibility with Last.fm, its Last.fm's responsibility to ensure comparability with iTunes.

This is essentially true, scrobbling is our thing, and they're not obliged to support it.  However, at the same time, iTunes is Apple's software, and we can't reverse engineer it -- we can only work with the tools they've give us.

For scrobbling to work with iTunes, we install a 3rd party Plug-In in your iTunes folder, which acts as a bridge between iTunes and the Last.fm Desktop Client (aka The scrobbler).  Now, from what I can see, our plug-in is not being recognised or loaded by iTunes in the new version -- that could be for any number of reasons -- we're still investigating and trying to determine the exact cause.

Until we know for sure why our plugin is not loading in itunes, there's no benefit to pointing fingers.  Please be assured we're looking into this as a matter of priority, and if the problem is indeed on our side we will fix it as soon as we possibly can.

>>>iTunes broke it's compatibility with 3rd party apps.

Tim, do you have any examples of other 3rd party Plug-Ins or apps affected  by the 12.7 update?

Well I am the dev of the Last.fm-Scrubbler in which you can also scrobble via iTunes but the connection isn't done with a plugin but with the com component itself that comes when installing iTunes (iTunesLib). SInce 12.7, the connection doesn't work.

Before I installed 12.7 I read the statement but didn't see anything that would lead me to believe that the scrobbler wouldn't work but here we are.  In times past all you had to do was drop a copy of the dll into the plugins folder and off you went but that is no longer the case.

The last.fm installer placed itw_scrobbler.dll into the plugins folder.  Since we started having problems with iTunes not recognizing it I've kept a copy of the one dated 2/14/2015 in a folder just in case I needed to manually copy it to the plugins folder.

That old school trick no longer works with iTunes 12.7 and it was the very first thing I tried once I realized that the scrobbler wasn't working.

It looks like an attempt to regain control over iTunes content in much the same vein they do with their mac's.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208075

My suggestion is that everyone give them feedback over this new version.

It is actually that iTunes removed all event based functionality from the old iTunes SDK. We are having to deal with the same issue for Rainmeter at the moment and are having to transition to pulling the info unless Apple reverts these changes.

For all those looking for a cause of this we are having to deal with the same issue for Rainmeter.
From my testing it would seem that Apple removed the iTunesEventsHandlers. Thus any app that relied on any event from http://www.joshkunz.com/iTunesControl/interface__IiTunesEvents.html (Backup to the old official SDK references) is no longer going to work (Any calls to the event handler return null). Everything else in the COM interface seems to be fine, but the events won't work so you will have to transition to pulling for new info.

I hope Apple either reverts this part of the changes or you guys can figure a way around it. If anyone figures a way to restore event triggers let me know.

I updated the WPF-Scrubbler to work with iTunes 12.7. As Trevor Hamilton said, they removed some events. The iTunes scrobbling of the WPF-Scrubbler works pretty much the same as the normal Last.fm desktop client.

You can download it here.

Please be aware of the following limitations:
- Scrobbling tracks on repeat won't work
- Scrobbling the "Album Artist" field won't work.

Hope this helps anyone.

Download link is in the post you are commenting on. Caching means, if you loose internet connection tracks will be cached and scrobbled once the internet connection is back it scrobbles the cached tracks.

Will your Scrubbler also scrobble tracks played on an iDevice that is then synced to iTunes (as the Last.fm Scrobbler will/should)?

Just wanted to clarify...

I've tried this and it works well for tracks played in itunes itself. I'd like now to submit those tracks that I played by iPod a couple of days ago (and into the future too). I can import the itunes Music Library.xml file OK as a Media Player DB.

I can sort it on any heading except 'Last Played'. Doing this would quickly identify the tracks I want to scrobble.

When I select tracks to scrobble, they are added with the current time and multiple times, to match their iTunes playcount. I can see from previous release notes that this was the intended behaviour from about v1.8. I think it would be good if it was selectable to only scrobble once and to do so with the date stamp contained within the 'Last Played' field.

Are such behaviour changes a) possible, b) simple and c) reasonable ?

If so, it could even make this scrobbler useful for capturing those tracks that are lost when iTunes crashes as it starts to copy new, replacement tracks to the iPod (about once every two weeks for me).

Surprised none of you have learnt from before, this happened to me a while ago and I refuse to update iTunes now, just don't update iTunes and you'll be fine.

Side note, regardless the scrobbler is a piece of trash anyway, it seriously crashes every time yet I continue to use it and complain. lol I've just lost a bunch of scrobbles again that will never be retrieved, oh well.

You know if we'd paid money for the scrobbler and it didn't work I'd be raising sand.  However, this utility and service are free to us so have some patience with the folks while they make the necessary adjustments to it so it can work under the changes that apple has made.

Guilherme if you have an issue with iTunes updates breaking Lastfm blame Apple, the whole point of having an SDK is that you can use it without it breaking suddenly. This is also the reason why there is no official fix yet because Apple has not said that they are removing the events part of the SDK and given that half of iTunes is broken that likely used events it may entirely be an accident on Apple's part.

Well I was just saying this has been a problem for a long time now and I thought everyone was aware of it, updating iTunes always messes up the scrobbler because they aren't compatible with each other.

It makes sense not to update iTunes until lastfm confirms everything is working. I'd roll back to earlier version of iTunes which was working, reinstall both iTunes and the scrobbler.

My current setup is working but since it broke last time I can't use the "diagnostic" tool anymore to retrieve any lost scrobbles sadly.

Same problem here. I remember a while ago the Scrobbler stopped working when iTunes updated, so don't just blame iTunes newest version. This is a reoccurring problem for the scrobbler and I'm sick to death of it. I love this site and the service it provides, but it is INSANELY frustrating having to go get support every time iTunes updates, especially considering they don't have an actual support team to contact, just these community forums. This is the sole reason I've refused to pay for a "paid" account despite loving the service, it's just still too broken.
