Last.fm, here's an idea of how to improve the terrible Beta version...

Previously I did a mockup of an improved Beta version of the user profile. Today I made an even better version: http://i.imgbox.com/7eKSy1Jc.png

What do you think about it?

Allow BBCode in the About Me section and I'm all for it. Great work, it looks fantastic.

We must spread the word!

I re-post the updated version (with mini-album covers, Top Albums, improved charts timeline & top menu) here, to be more visible: http://i.imgbox.com/6fMDilQd.png

Simple, straight-forward, clean. A contemporary representation of the old days and what last.fm should always be about: a place that creates a "diary"of your listening habits.
Bravo, my friend.

The final update: http://i.imgbox.com/AAFbdTeo.png

Log: changed some colors (including the countbars background), added Events, updated the top menu, added Add Friend and Send Message links, improved the user description (name, sex, location, joined, compatibility).

Looks great man. I like that you combined the aesthetic design of the new site with the functionality of the old.

Thanks. It's not pixel perfect and it can still be improved. But I'm sure that many users would like something similar to that mockup.

Damn! Where were you when they were working on this crap? THIS is what we all want to see when we visit our homepage (which I didn't do for a few days now - something which never happened before since I used to visit my page at least 10 times a day). They definitely should hire you and fire everyone else.

I posted many times on their Feedback forum. I also posted a similar mockup on that forum. The feedback from users was around 95% positive. But Last.fm didn't care.

The reasons for not allowing BBCode in the About Me-section could be of all kinds. Probably they can't explain. If that is gone forever, they could at least give us back visible charts and something more to see and click on. Like this example.

The new profile pages look ugly and empty, it's very hard to look at.

They haven't mentioned anything about the sidebar yet.. they're ignoring the inquiries about what is going on with that. I don't mind if it's temporary but they could at least say something about the matter.

Unfortunately they won't change it.

Yours looks awesome; I'm sure if Last.fm had taken that route, the reception would have been much better.
I love how you implemented the compatibility bar.

I would have just kept the 'Top Track' header that Last.fm has, as it adds more of a personal touch.
Also, a listing of 'Top Albums' wouldn't hurt right after 'Top Tracks'.

As far as BBCode is concerned, if they can show ads where my 'About Me' should be, then BBCode can be added onto profile pages.

Yes, but in the same simple list format as Top Artists and Top Tracks (not the huge and ugly current format).

And regarding ads, they can find plenty of space on the sidebar.

This is acctually SO MUCH BETTER than this new garbage! I would really like if they can consider this to change this shit to look better!
But still I am FOR SMALLER SIZE OF EVERYTHING FOR PC DESKTOP USERS.

not everyone uses Touch Screen technology, so it suits mostly for those iPad things.
But still it's better than this new one thing with stupid not needed banner taking most of the profile page when you enter on.

They actually should add some options at the Settings page to configure the layout, from font sizes to background color, from artist - title / title - artist to how many items are displayed on each section. It can be done if there's willingness.

Like it! I think the average number of plays per day would go nicely next to the total number of artists as well. I don't mind the top albums, but 8 smaller ones like the artists in your pic would be better than the huge ones we have now.

You deserve any money the Last.fm design team got for their unfinished service. There's a lot that I feel is missing on your example, but it's is far more acceptable than what we currently have. Props to you.

This mockup was of course based on their Beta version. I didn't make a completely new version because I knew that it would be a waste of time. If I'd have total control I'd make an even more optimized design.

Alin since last.fm won't even give a glance to you and your ideas, I suggest you to conatct Tomahawk on twitter for their new site like last.fm (Hatchet). maybe they need more help to launch the site faster. As we all hope they will be better than last.fm *o*

This is awesome though i have already seen this. I think there should be an option to switch to album view too. The only good thing about the beta is you can see your top albums on the main page along with the text versions.

This is so much better than the shit they came up with. I wouldn't even be mad if this was the real design.

I think the bar at the top where the last.fm logo is should be the old red though. That shit was iconic as far as I'm concerned.

This is exactly what I was thinking of, you're great, this has to be pushed up.

One of their biggest errors is that they removed the charts from the main page, because all those charts show the general musical aspect of a person, it's the basic sense of this website. What was the deal in removing that?

No answers were given.

I had graphic design as a part of my studies too and  I got to say, I see what they tried to do... It's just... no. Something went wrong.

I hope they do something with this. Let us now if he responds.

"It's at times like this that I must remember not to draw customer service inspiration from Basil Fawlty." - Of all the things they could have carried over from the previous incarnation, they had to choose the passive-aggression? What a top-grade forest clearing.

This is probably the last version that mockup: http://i.imgbox.com/6fMDilQd.png I think it looks closer to the old design than before.

Changes:

- Added mini-cover art at Recent Tracks.

- Added Top Albums.

- Added the settings icons.

- Improved the top menu. Now it's in a logical order: library group (Library, Loved Tracks, Tags), friends group (Friends, Inbox) , social group (Journals, Groups). Inbox has also the numbers of new messages in brackets.

- Added "All time 12mo 6mo 3mo 1mo 1wk" on top of charts. It's much easier to have all these options displayed instead hidding them in a drop down menu.

Looks sweet! I like your user compatibility solution.

1. I can't imagine that they will go back to "friends". Maybe find a way to fit Following/following? (Or maybe just following. Who cares who are following you)

2. Someone mentioned age, sex and nationality. Do you think that is possible to squeeze in, or will it mess up the layout?

1. They could add a More link at the end of that menu and put extra links here.

2. Easily. It could be added right after your name in the header (which is under your username). There's plenty of horizontal space. And instead Scrobbling since **** it should be Joined: ******* A bit more space saved.

3. Is the display of 6 random friends interesting to anyone? If anything, maybe a display only of friends who are listening?

3. A better solution would be to display let's say 6 friends, but in a vertical list and on the right what they're listening: http://i.imgbox.com/7uYcV3ym.png

Friends things is great! I like this version it's useful easy to see everything you're interested in one's profile and music.! great job! this is what real work should work and those who are interested really in site, its users, and use of site. T_T
this shows how half assed they did work with whole team. and you Alin by yourself did the whole job of good customizing which all users apporve. x.x really shame on them.

btw if they want MORE ADS. since they're desperate in promotion and income, I suggest that between each cathegory on right side (example: Jorunals, Groups etc) you put ADS space. then they will get much more ads and on one side to not dissrupt funcionality of profile but still gain promotions.

agree also for higher subscription so those who don't want to see so much ads can subscribe per higher price and give them also good income.

@foolish: "LOVE IT! however I still think the top bar needs to be RED.. like the old site... the big red horizontal bar needs to stay!"

I'm not very happy with the current header (even the one from the mockup). It should be much smaller and there should be the possibility to select a color. That player on top of the page should be on the sidebar.

@Ferry Ferdian: "Below the "Your Musical Compatibility ...", is it possible to show the common artists ("Music You Have in Common Include ...")". Or right after "Your musical compatibility...".

This is so much better than the current design. I miss how much information was immediately accessible on the old profile page. There are way too many excess clicks involved now to see anything even slightly in-depth.

The new look accentuates pointlessness, and it's boring.  It looks like they're hawking futuristic vacuum cleaners, and replacing knowledge about what your friends and neighbors are listening to with lame little "factoids" pertaining to worldwide popularity (read sales) of some grotty little pop star's latest efforts, is just corporate CBS culture raining poop on Last.fm's users -- this is rubbish.
